I dont know shit about finding exploits, i just google the version of software that the target server has and add a little 'exploits' after that. Google shows me numerous websites that offer bugs and exploits of numerous software according to version. Then i just read how that exploit does and make a program to do that.
For example if FTP program x on server gives root access if a particular series of bytes is sent to it, i make a program to sent those bytes.
To be honest, never once have i thought of myself as a 'hacker'. I dont know, it sounds kinda childish
