>At the Vive Unbound developers forum in Beijing, CEO Cher Wang revealed that Valve and her team made "a very, very big technological breakthrough" with the headset.
>This breakthrough was apparently so significant that they decided to scrap the original version and focus on building the consumer kit with this mysterious breakthrough applied.
>"We shouldn't make our users swap their systems later just so we could meet the December shipping date," said Wang
What is it /g/?
Looks like a VR headset, anon.
AR trophies
screencap this!

It was a breakthrough in replacing something with someone thing cheaper, so they just want to incur less cost while selling for a good amount.
Valve is not a good producer of physical content. They sell and make digital products. Their headset is going to be shit, just like the controller and the steambox.
Paid DLC

Valve is handling the software aspect of the Vive. The hardware is being done by HTC, which is a billion dollar hardware company with decades of experience in manufacturing.
slightly different lens
GAME CHANGER, BREAKING THE MOLD ETC
I would guess proper eye tracking, that has to be the next big thing...
>>51970985
The controller is ok, but the steam machines were a shame.
>>51971034
>>51970985
Valve doesn't even have a proper hardware division themselves. They fired 90% of their in-house hardware staff back in 2013, hence why VR is a partnership with HTC and Steam Machines are partnerships with Dell and other PC manufacturers.
The only actual hardware Valve has made is the Steam Controller, which has been met with mostly positive reception.

if they actually had that ready, there's no reason not to say anything about it
literally silicon valley s02e07
they won't beat oculus with carmack, samsung, and zuckerberg's 2.5 billion behind them
most likely just realized they can't even come close to the gear vr, and desperate to include something that could make their product be considered superior for at least some niche group
>>51971224
>>51971228
Whatever man have fun with your gimped facebook spy machine.
>>51971228
Bringing GearVR into the discussion is ridiculous. It's not even the same kind of product. GearVR is a plastic shell with a few extra sensors that is powered entirely by a mobile phone. It's not even usable without a Samsung phone to go inside it.
That being said, I agree on all other counts. Vive's only real chance of success was beating Rift to store shelves.
Can't wait for valve to show off their new tech and have every journalist praise it for leapfrogging Oculus again. Facebook fags BTFO.
>>51971228
>they won't beat oculus with carmack, samsung, and zuckerberg's 2.5 billion behind them
Most likely not, but the competition will spur both companies to have to work harder at it.
Biggest problem I see with the Vive currently is how it's apparently going to be sold at a 'premium' price bracket - realistically speaking I doubt this 'major breakthrough' will be enough to justify an extra 2-300$ on top of what the Rift willoffer.
>>51971326
Well it better be significant enough to warrant a 3 month wait.
>>51970936
they couldn't make the deadline so they bullshitted an excuse to delay it,
>>51971228
Tried both Vive and oculus, i have to say Vive wins in all ways in gaming.
That said everyone buying an oculus opts in for the botnet
>>51970985
The controller is good you fuccboi
>>51971056
>proper eye tracking
They'd actually be able to do significant shit if they had good eye tracking. They really don't need detailed graphics outside of the fovea vision region.
>>51971349
I seriously doubt it. They already disappointed a lot of people with the delay so if they do it again by lying about the breakthrough, people are going to be at their necks.
>>51971344
It will be.
>>51971359
This. The oculus is shit.
>>51970936
The breakthrough they will be announcing is merely the Summer Lesson release for Vive
It's already confirmed
>>51971359
What are the odds that the hardware itself is botnet?
The Oculus store or whatever, sure, but the hardware's probably fine
>>51971298
They are both spy machines, as if valve doesn't collect user information as well.
The best option is OSVR, if it kicks off and gains traction eventually then more hardware manufacturers will jump into the fray.
VR HMDs should be like shopping for a monitor, and its motion controllers like shopping for any other peripheral.
Is VR going to be a console war thing with Vive and Oculus having exclusives, because that sounds extremely shitty.
>>51971413
Nope. The cameras send data over to facebook and take pictures of you. It was already confirmed when someone hacked the dk2.
>>51971413
An Internet connection is not required to use both of them
>>51971391
>I seriously doubt it. They already disappointed a lot of people with the delay so if they do it again by lying about the breakthrough, people are going to be at their necks.
It happens all the time. For example, AMD's revolutionary Bulldozer
>>51971414
At least valve doesn't sell your information. They respect your privacy.
>>51971455
Yeah but this is HTC and Valve. They won't lie again to everyone because they've seen how bad the backlash was. Also since the delay, HTC has been a lot more communicative with the community, so it's obvious they changed their ways. The marketing leader Jeff Gattis left so that's probably why.
We will have to wait anyway to get it jailbroken or rooted, because they will block any fun content probably.
>>51971434
Source fagit
>>51971509
It's literally just a monitor that displays what your computer tells it to. Unless your computer blocks all fun content already, you have nothing to worry about.
>>51971557
You can probably find it with google. It's the same guy that hacked into the dk2 and found how their tracking algorithms work.
>>51971582
This. But oculus is the only one making drivers that that use your internet connection. If they don't limit what you run on it then they're spying on you.
>>51971592
Faggot
Is anyone else hyped for it? Recently there was hints from Valve that it would be HDR screens and the guy was really amazed by how good it was. They also hinted at scanning in things like your room and other people, so you will have both AR and VR. Imagine if both of those things was the breakthrough. It'll crush oculus.
>>51971100
>The only actual hardware Valve has made is the Steam Controller, which has been met with mostly positive reception.
But it shows Valve's weakness - distribution of physical items.
Most of the world can't even order Steam Controller yet.

There are blatant PSVR shills as well, but let's not go there, it isn't even worth mentioning.
>>51971434
they tag a photo of your dick with your facebook profile that only the admins can see
>>51971378
If it is eye tracking, then I'd consider vive over oculus, granted this doesn't raise the price significantly.
>They really don't need detailed graphics outside of the fovea vision region
It won't be worth it on such a small resolution until you hit 4K per eye.
Eye tracking would be useful for other players to see where you are looking. And have NPCs and the game react to whatever you look at.
Or use it as a lazy way to navigate a UI, could be more effective than a mouse cursor or moving your head or hands around.
>>51971756
Mark Zuckerberg liked this post
I don't know what it is, but if they decided to delay the shipping date I know it's gonna kill the fucking rift.
>>51971726
That isn't really relevant when the Vive isn't being distributed or manufactured by Valve though.
>>51972006
This. Oculus shills fuck off.
My dad works at steam and he told me it's full body tracking.
>>51971996
>if you don't like valve's HMD you're a Facebook shill
Try to be less transparent, Rajeet, your cover has been blown.
>>51972006
I wouldn't hold my hopes up, they lost their key advantage.
Even if it is better most people eager to get into VR will buy the rift because they wouldn't have the patience to wait for another 3 months.
No harm in waiting until January 6 to see what the fuss is all about.
>>51972045
my dad works at steam and he told me it's full body cockrings
>>51972034
This.
Valve's just set up their own factories, you can't blame them for not wanting to handle the load of millions of vives.
>>51972068
I've waited 3 fucking years, I'll wait 3 months.
>>51972034
That's the point of distributing the Vive and Steam Machines through people other than Valve.
Valve just simply could not do it.
They have no idea how to do a global hardware release.
Dell, eMachines, HTC, etc - That's sort of their bag.
Vale should have, instead of producing the Steam Controller themselves, offloaded it to HTC.
>>51972094
This. The quality of the product matters more, but the Rift is supported by Facebook, as well as being an technologically inferior. No one should get a Rift.
>>51970936
>What is it /g/?
An external 3D projector so you can project digital hats on your head while wearing it.

a nice way to PR around the fact that their current product is too buggy and the project can't meet the deadline anyway

hey guys, i just bought a used oculus dk1 with a riftup kit for 180€, how good did i do?
>>51971034
As I write this reply while holding my m9 with my fingertips because it get's uncomfortably warm after 5 minutes, I must say HTC is like a nice Taiwanese whore. You pay less for it than a nice western whore, but when she get's undressed you see she has a dick. The m9 seems nice and all, but it's underclocked ~500mhz, and the battery doesn't last a day unless you're using battery saving mode. The htc sense keyboard is atrocious and innacurate. From the top it looks like one of those old tv remotes. It's pretty easy to unlock the bootloader though. But there is an annoying security system which you can't turn off, unless you pay $20 to some shady hacker. And lastly, the camera sucks ass. Htc sense is also a very weird experience, it doesn't look too ugly, but in some undescribable way it feels shitty.
>>51972371
this shouldn't indicate how well made the vive will be done though..
valve surely lends a hand at the manufacteuring department to ensure quality. htc is more responsible to get its chinese hardware contracts active and order parts in a massive scale
>>51972371
>You pay less for it than a nice western whore, but when she get's undressed you see she has a dick.
So it exceeds our expectations?
This is a very good sign, I really appreciate when a company cares enough about a product to delay it for quality assurance purposes, I really wouldn't expect such a thing from the Oculus team now that it's backed by Facebook, prior to then I would but not now.
Thankfully we live in a world where software is patched easily but we can't say the same for hardware, I am willing to wait until all these devices come out so that I can compare them all first hand, I'm not just going to jump the gun.
