It is pretty decent. Dont listen to him.
It has many widgets already build in and you can get some more from controlsfx project.

All related GUI code is separated into fXML files like other frameworks have been doing it for many year in Qt.
It's really awesome desu.

It's fine to use JavaFX and Java 8 for that. Just create good Java models out of data and it's drag/drop MVC.

Also forgot to mention, that oracle made a GUI builder (scene builder) for creating desktop application. You can easily build a scene, add listener methods to your nodes and let scene builder create a skeleton java file.

Oracle has stopped support but open source communities are taking care of that.

Version 8 is better than the previous ones.
In general, it's nowhere near to serious toolkits like Qt or wpf, but in the Java world I can't think of a better alternative.

In other words: it's still not great, but it's better than the alternatives.

I really love the gui builder. FX is the only way Java should be written on desktop. Swing/AWT ARE THE FUCKING WORST.
