Daily reminder that having a home server is a sign of mental illness.
In most cases alone, degenerate people are trying to give their lifes a purporse and they get something that they call "home servers". They waste their entire days on playing with it instead of having normal interaction with friends and family. Such people doesn't have a job and are close to suiciding.

Pic rel, typical home server owner.

Personally, I pay a small monthly fee to use a non-botnet email service. But before there were things like MS 365 and Google for Work, it was very common for a small business to have their own email server since "business" email though your ISP was so overpriced.

'home server' is just a host for network and security labbing, more convenient and more capability than going to department lab. Freenas box is just for local NAS. VPS are for anything that needs to be publicly accessible.

Alright faggets, I need your help.

I have a home server (esxi 6) with several vms running. One of them acts as a https reverse proxy.

A few days ago and out of a sudden, without changing anything on my server/network setup, I noticed that I cannot access any of vm's remotely.

if I am outside my home, typing any xxx.mydomain.com url, will lead to connection time out. If I type any of url's locally, it will connect to my vm's without any issues.

Rebooted server, reset router's settings, and this fucking issue is still present. WTF is going on gee?

Not all routers have this capability even less have the capability of running custom firmware to use VPN facilities. In fact, security-wise it is a good practice to have a machine dedicated to remote access to be separate from the router.

What would be the point of running a VPN/torrent box at your house? The main allure to using those are so you can route your traffic through another location to insulate yourself from being identified by your IP. I don't see what running one at your house would accomplish.

SSH is useful, sure, just run an SSH server on your NAS or something. I question the point of running owncloud if you're already using SSH, you can just get your files over SFTP if you're running an SSH server.

Beautiful b8 thread. I'm in fucking awe. So many butthurt aspies are going to cry that their home server has a legitimate purpose when in reality the amount they spent, monetarily, on building it and providing electricity to it could have been spent on a vps with better specs and a vastly better connection to do whatever dumb bullshit they think they need it for in the first fucking place.

That's not even accounting for the time they'd spend on it. Home servers = NEET friendless shit.

This is a fair point. You could run your seedbox at home and have it connect to a VPN offsite; hadn't thought of that, though it seems obvious now that you mention it.

>>51966033
I never really considered MITM a serious concern, unless you are being monitored by actual government entities with a desire to snoop on your communications or something. No one's going to be able to break into an encrypted SSH session over a public wifi connection at some random location like McDonalds or a hotel, or whatever unless they are specifically after you.
>>
>>51966098
>vps with better specs and a vastly better connection to do whatever dumb bullshit they think they need it for in the first fucking place.
The problem with VPS is access control: anyone on the provider's side can potentially access all files inside of it, yes you could encrypt your volumes and your connection but remember, unauthorized physical (or virtual equivalent images) access to a machine means that the machine is compromised.
>>
>>51966098
yea let's rent a VPS that can only run 1 OS at the same time?

except thats not the main allure you fucking idiot. VPNs allow secure access to remote network resources from otherwise potentially insecure locations. ie work, public wifi, etc.

privacy masking is just an added bonus when you tap into a foreign network. and honestly depending on your threat model you're doing more harm than good.

A true Dmz is a segregated network that keeps your lan safe from the Dmz network. Lan hosts can connect to DmZ, but Dmz cannot connect to lan.

Real example. I had a web app running on a home server, only forwarding port 80. Server was hacked and as a result the attacker had access to the rest of my lan. Had I been using a proper Dmz, they only would have had access to the web server.

Not who you replied to here.

I never considered this. I did virtualize my mail and owncloud servers but they indeed still have access to the lan. How would I separate them, given that they run on the same server and it needs to see the lan?

Run a virtual instance of pfsense. It can be difficult to get it setup correctly, however. It's a lot easier if you replace your router with a dedicated pfsense box with multiple nics.

Can't go wrong with hardware firewall.
Virtualized Pfsence is a bitch.
>>
>>51966733
well yeah, but the servers all run on the same machine from a single ethernet port. I'd need to do some crazy vlan shit to make it work

>>

I should add that the attacker launched a reverse she'll. A proper dmz should also block outbound connections, or at least send outbound through a filtered proxy or whitelist firewall.

>>
>>51966797
It's still a bitch if pfsense isn't your edge router. I had to do this and set a static route on the edge router to pfsense DmZ vlan. Then I had to forward ports both in pfsense and the edge router. Then create all the rules to prevent the Dmz network from getting to the lan, while still allowing the lan to get to the DmZ. Way easier with pfsense at the edge.

Linux has been by primary home OS since I was 14 (started with Slackware 3.0 for anyone that cares). Currently I'm 33. I eat well, go to the gym every day, have a decent job and dress well.

Checkmate atheists.

After setting things up there is an initial time investment, sure. But it's not anywhere near as much effort as people in here make it out to be. Once everything is set up you can leave your server on for weeks and forget about it, really.

If you're concerned about security, using your own server is really the only option. With any of these "cloud" services you are handing your data to the NSA on a silver platter. Have fun with that.

I don't like to be tied to one service provider.

Is it even possible to get your data from Office 365 to gmail? Can you get it to your own pc?

What if your service provider gets hacked, is unavailable or just plainly stops? Google has done that with a few services now.

Gmail is among their most used services, so they wouldn't stop it.
