My guess is that it's all really connected with how people aspire to do great things or at least be part of movements who do great things. They've grown up seeing documentaries and reading in their school textbooks about the civil rights activists that were active in the 50's and 60's. Now that they're adults they want to do the same thing, but unfortunately for them the civil rights activists of the 60's were successful and there really isn't much institutional racism left to fight anymore.
