Apologies for the lack of a backlink. Last person decided to make a blank untitled thread under the excuse of "we should only allow the elite in these threads", so I couldn't be tasked to bother hunting it back down.

If someone has the link at hand, thanks in advance.

Thought this might be a decent place to ask since there's some audio knowledge here.

I have a shitty mic with a really short cable, the second I try to extend said cable I get this high buzzing noise from microphone, even if I just plug the extension cable into the mic port without connecting the mic to it.
If I plug just the mic into the mic port I get no buzz or static whatsoever.
where's the fault here? Do I buy a better soundcard, mic, cable..?
How would I fix this?

There is no best brand. You'll have people arguing that some like AKG or Audio Technica are great brands, but you have wide tiered spread of different brands based on what you're looking to pay.

Beats, as mentioned by >>51962289, are not a good brand. They're a popular brand of overpriced junk headphones that have a famous name behind them. They're meant to be the thing kids will kick and scream over at Christmas.

what do you find lacking in the 558? bass probably?
>>
>>51964039
Going to explain as best as I can

They're certainly not bad headphones, or not even bad by comparison. They're just not "better"

The Sennheisers are lacking in the low frequencies and seem to make up for it in the lower mid ranges, making them better for EDM and metal and shit

However, for classic and prog rock, the Grados are brighter and also a bit scooped. Really helps with the punchy 70's bass playing you hear in bands like Yes and Gentle Giant

I only own a pair of meme-50's that have served me well for about 5 years. They're always on me, either at the desktop or in a backpack. It would be nice to entertain some kind of desktop setup and keep the heavily worn in m50's as portables.

I probably can't describe what I look for in audio too technically, but I do like a generally even balance, maybe with more impact on lows/mids rather than treble. My acoustic music is usually pretty distorted, or if clean it's mostly guitar. With electronic music I focus a lot on dnb and weeb shit.

dt 770's have been on my mind for a long time just because of reviews and the velour pads look like heaven compared to the m50's. Closed is somewhat important just because I'm almost always with roommates or someone else in the house. How much of a difference is 80 ohms from 250? What kind of amp is necessary?
>>
>>51967863
dt770 would be a good choice.
80ohm would have no problem, but 250ohm might not get all your music to full. youd want to get an O2 or something eventually

I found this tangled mess in my house today. They are Bose freestyles. Bought them for my father and he hasn't been using them. Paid around $150. I want to know if I should just take these, or if I could get a better pair for around $100? I will use them only for studying at low volumes, in public. Inb4 moralfags I asked and he didn't care if I took them.
>>
>>51967945
I fell for the meme and got VSonic VSD3S and I honestly don't like them that much, just get some lower end brainwavz buds, swap out the tips for something more isolated and you'll probably find what you're looking for.
>>
>>51968192
I'm also considering the higher end model, the VSD5, which is apparently good too.

Also, over-the-ear is kinda important if we're talking form factor, unless the sound is absolutely amazing on something that is not over-the-ear.

Audio-Technica ATH-PRO700MK2
$126 on amazon. Get them with fiio e11, and prepare to have some fun. The sound isolation is excellent with the stock pads, but they are uncomfortable for long listening sessions.

Not necessarily a perfect application for you, but someone who appreciates bass music will definitely enjoy these cans. I had purchased these with a FiiO E11 a few years back, apparently the E11 is no longer a thing?

I'm looking to get a pair of new headphones and I've narrowed it down to the MDR-V6 and ATH-M40X
A friend has the V6's and they sound great but the removable cable is attracting me to the M40Xs. At the same time I know it's ez as fuck to mod the V6's to have a removable cable, and they seem a bit more durable.
Thoughts?

Thinking of picking a pair up for Christmas.
>>
Anyone here have experience with both the HD 598 and HD 558? I'm just curious as to how they compare in build quality and comfort. They look to be essentially the same.
>>
>>51968969
From someone who owned 7506 and now owns M40X:

V6/7506 are brighter sounding, if you are sensitive to treble they may not be enjoyable to listen to for extended periods. I find they cause your ears to work a lot harder to take in all the micro-details they portray. Stock pads are a lot more uncomfortable than M40's, but I am always wary of replacing pads as I am OCD about how new pads may affect sound. I also hate coiled cables.

M40X's have a little bit more exaggerated bass then the Sonys, but certainly do not share the harshness of the highs. I definitely wouldn't call them ruler-flat sounding. I am a fan of the removable cable and how light they sit on the head. I found the Sonys almost sat as an on-ear for me, but the M40X and M50X snugly fit around and over the ear. Note that the M40Xs don't come with the short&straight cable and that needs to be purchased separately.

>>
>>51969036
They are essentially the same. 558's probably have a bit more clamping force out of the box but after a few days will pretty much loosen up to how the 598s sit.

598 of course has the pleather padding under the headband whereas the 558 has foam. Up to you which you prefer. I find the earpads to be indistinguishable.

Logitech G930s are my current

To add, I'm okay with the G930s but I've run into two problems, one the mfg was fine with but I didn't have a backup and I work from home with these so I couldn't send them in to be repaired, it's an issue with them charging from USB where for some reason after being fully charged with the cord still in they will make a shrill sound for 15+ minutes.
The second is that the part where the top attaches to the ear and rotates is very weak, and cracked, a part eventually broke off and now it's a pain to handle. Is sugru okay to use on headsets/having near your ear after drying? I'm on the fence on using it for this.

I wish the person who wrote that damn template didn't tell you to disregard IEM isolation.
IM02 is alright. Impedance adapters may be up your alley if you want a bit more mid/treble.

>>51972137
The point was that it was a cheap headphone that had a different design principle, that came with an awful enclosure. In reality, the driver is quite limited and the price is increased.
I have never liked the T50rp or most of its mods. I think if you want to look into modding for its own sake, you should start elsewhere.
If you want to mod for performance, pick up a different planar magnetic headphone or something.
>>
>>51972718
Oh. isolation is kinda a non-issue for me. I guess it would have been better to say that than to leave it out completely.
>>
>>51972718
The T50RP and its siblings stood out to me because they're some of the cheapest orthodynamic headphones out there and people have done some really cool stuff with them.

>Why not just start by using EQ to remove the bass?

>>
>>51972818
Perhaps I might be biased, disliked most of the t50rp variants I have heard.
Modding is a hobby in itself, but I don't like the idea of picking a different driver type because it is different, if not for performance or price.

>>51972835
The lowest bass doesn't do too much for "boom/punch", increases rumble and such. That is further up, 60-120Hz or so.
You were also complaining about the clarity. and upper bass/midbass is not so beneficial for that.
>>
>>51972939

Start out really cheap with some like KSC75 or a TH-02, something with a somewhat decent sound, and a really cheap frame.
Many of the Hifimans show promise under modding, and they aren't too hard too hard to open up.
>>
>>51972818
Get an older ortho for even cheaper, like a Yamaha HP-3. If you're lucky you can even score something that would blow away anything beneath mid-tier Hifiman's for cheap too.

Man, there's a shit ton of old orthos for him to choose from. If you're talking Fostex, if he got something like an old T10, he would need a whole shell anyway. Something like T30 is $200'ish usually, and the OG T50 is even worse price wise.

Funny to hear the HP-3 get called garbage in the same thread that jerks off the X2 though, when it has basically the same bass and treble problems stock.

>>
>>51973982
Dynamic mods only really fall into changing out the cups and pad rolling with the exception of a couple models like HD800. Older orthos are the best bang for his buck if he wants to fool around with modding and dampening and get something decent at the end for next to nothing.

Also
>Implying anyone would shill stuff out of production for thirty years
Don't be retarded. If anything, that comment just said that the X2 is equally garbage for the same reasons, bloated midbass and all the rest.

Threads don't jerk off things, people do. There are many, many people who don't care for the X2.

No. Backwave modification has less of an effect, but baffle mods, damping material, are all still critically important.

Digital overhead as in the digital gain, causing clipping from the EQ itself exceeding 0dBFS. You need to correct for this somewhere, should be a preamp setting somewhere. That would be my main suspect, since you referred to the boost and not the playback level.
Not that your amplifier is nearly optimal, what with the high output impedance being quite inefficient into the headphone load.

Sony MDRZX100 ZX (or a similar model): too much bass. Got sweaty quickly. Uncomfortable when not around my ears.

RE-400 are almost the best neutral sound quality you're going to get for that budget, but the build quality, as with a lot of HiFiMan stuff, is ass. I've read reports of it lasting for like a year.

A151 are a good budget choice for neutral sound. Has a great cable, but the ear fit is very finicky and you absolutely have to choose the right tips for a good seal or you get literally no bass.

Nice old theater receiver with a dac if you don't mind the space. You should be able to get one for 20-50 bucks and it will do as well or better than an O2 combo. Planars really don't care about output impedance. You could even play them balanced right off the speaker taps. I'd probably put some resistors in the path as current limiters though or use the jack on it.

>dacs on receivers are generally just thrown on for the digital inputs
Not on the good ones. Stuff that was 1K+ ten years ago is cheap as hell now and they did 24/96 and higher just fine, which is already placebo territory. Don't forget the excellent O2 measurements were off a nice regulated bench supply as well. Same sort of thing.
>>
>>51976506
what the fuck does it matter if they could do 24/96 or higher when everything above 16/44.1 is literal placebo or worse, poorly resampled garbage? also you'd have to have really, really bad usb power to get audibly negative effects on the odac
>>
>>51976533
Exactly. The odac is a low bar, because most stuff past a certain point is pure placebo. Older receivers from good brands with more quality components than most modern ones are only lacking in a couple placebo features like reclocking and more upsampling. And they have demonstrably cleaner power supplies. Are you really so upset that a well-designed $1500 power-guzzling piece of equipment from yesteryear can perform as well or better than a tiny palmtop? Was that not sort of thing not the entire point of what NewAvGuy used to talk about? How much new stuff people were chasing was placebo.
>>
>>51976635
>basing DAC performance off of how expensive the product was decades ago, how good the power supply is and the bitrate/samplerate it supports
>>
>>51976660
It's either that or just saying it's a good design, which you would blow off just the same. We both know dac measurements for most things are almost impossible to come by. Brand, price, quality of components, reviews, and listening yourself are the only real indicators you usually have.

>>
>>51978782
Yes I have windows. Ok thanks for the infos. When a USB amp/dac is plugged to the laptop, should the laptop volume be maxed?
>>
>>51978807
this is a point of contention, and it depends how much you trust your dac/amp.

basically, after you plug everything in, set your windows volume to 100%. if you can hear any noise/static/whatever you want to call it, turn it down until it becomes inaudible. id be willing to bet that with an e10k you wont hear anything at all, but there are many factors involved in this, which is why you want to do it anyway.

whatever volume you end up at is where it should stay permanently, and all volume control after that should be done with the e10k's hardware knob
>>
>>51978843
Ok thanks. Fiio e10 is supposed to be better than my laptop sound card anyways, isn't it? I mean, so far I haven't heard anything strange coming from my sound card, except for few distortions in some tracks (especially hard rock or classical music). However I have no idea whether these distortions are due to the sound card or are they due to some flaws in the recordings....

ATH-M30X or MDR-V6 on sale, or if you can save some money like a responsible adult, the M40X.

>>51979557
I have issues with most sites. Rin Choi and speakerphone have a great/good method with all the right gear, but they are small scale. They also discuss a bunch of things in Korean, you may need to be able to read that.
Seeko and innerfidelity have a larger database, but they do stupid things.
Innerfidelity performs isolation measurements, which are rare and valuable. Correction curve needs some work, but you can do that easily, mostly just a midrange delta at 1kHz.

>>51976635
A lot of those old (80s-early 90s) things perform below the ODAC, lab grade power supply or not. Familiarization with ΔΣ/bitstream and oversampling made a lot of those old those DACs wasteful or purely inferior options to more modern products.

Also, my headphone port on my desktop is broken and my laptop soundcard sucks, so I was hoping I could get one that used a usb in or something.

I had looked at the fiio e10k but I think it only has a 1/8'' port and I figure that using the adapter reduces the quality of the sennheisers, so I'd prefer something that I could plug it's 1/4'' jack into. Anyone have any recommendations?

>I want to get a good amp/dac to boost their performance
DACs don't boost performance. There is no audible difference between a 2$ DAC and a 2000$ one unless it contains a DSP tuned to tilt the sound one way or another

HD598 does not benefit from amplification, anyone who tells you otherwise is lying to you or mentally ill

With those two things out of the way, you said that your headphone port was broken and your laptop soundcard sucks. Assuming you want to regularly use your headphones with both, an external DAC would be all you need, or you could spring for a cheap dac/amp combo if you really wanted like the Fulla or E10K that you mentioned.

There is no loss of quality from using an adapter and no audible difference between 1/4" and 1/8" terminations.

-Is it too quiet?
-Is the output impedance too high (fixable by equalization)?
-Is there noise/EMI or hiss to it?
-Does it sound distorted as you start to crank up the volume?
If the answer is no, then that is your answer.

Any non-USB headphone I connect to my PS3 via some connector thing to the red and white jacks sounds weird. Like, really digital. Could it be the wire quality? 'Cause if I pull the headphone jack out of the connector a bit, it sounds like an echo chamber. If so, can I get a rec on a good connector wire? This is what I'm using: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004HTHJNG?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00
>>
>>51983795
it could also be the connector on the ps3 as well. not that a wire is an expensive purchase, but if it doesnt work, it's the connector itself, or the connector has come loose

Sounds like I'd constantly be replacing batteries. Unless it's better to leave it in passive? Otherwise a really cool suggestion though, cheers.

Sony 10-RC. I have them, can hide some detail as quite muddy. But cheap on sale (£40), 3-year warranty for £10 extra and enjoyable for what it is.

Obviously you don't leave the noise cancelling function on 24/7. Also this headphone continues to function as normal headphones even when the batteries are dead.

These are the best ones I have found that have ANC, the rest are overpriced and have even worse sound quality.

Thanks, could it be because the RCA cables aren't HD? Would this work http://www.amazon.co.uk/Component-Cable-Sony-Playstation-PS2/dp/B0050HNJW4/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1450726703&sr=8-6&keywords=rca+cable+ps3

RCA is connected properly to PS3 and I tried 2 dif RCA cables, same result. I connected headphones > coupler > amp wire > connector > RCA > PS3... I think it sounds more refined, it's still kind of digital (so bass feels really feint) but it's not as bad. Maybe PS3 just sounds bad with non-USB headphones.

Would an iPod Touch 6 power a pair of 95 ohms headphones? Only evidence I can find is a thread on head-fi with a guy claiming it can without any evidence.

Anyone knows if the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi MB3 (http://software.store.creative.com/p/software/sound-blaster-x-fi-mb3) supports the ODAC? I'm trying to get virtual surround sound through my ODAC but I don't see solutions and Creative doesn't have a trial version so that I can try the application out.

I've tried Razer Surround before but it adds a lot of delay to the sound so it's unusable for me.

Any alternatives to this other than buying a sound card, which is kinda stupid since I already have an O2+ODAC.

Impedance doesn't tell you sensitivity like that.
There is the difference in personal listening level, and what headphones would you be using anyway?

Sooo....people are returning their X2's to Amazon because of the glued pad stuff and they're only $149 used.

If I don't care about the glued pads, are they worth it for that price?

I bought a pair of "very good" condition 598's from Amazon and they were mint, so I suspect everything else about these is probably in great condition.

I've been waiting for a price drop for a while
Should I go for it?

Glued pads, pads leaking dye, metallic finish literally chipping and flaking off with light use, nigger bass and recessed mids. If you're okay with those things they're a steal at that price sure.

anyways I haven't been in these threads for quite some time, apparently everyone is shitting on the X2 when previously it was hot shit
What happened?

Well hit me home, because my post was not made without research. Does it exist? Razer Surround and Sound Blaster X-Fi MB3 seem to be the only ones that exist. One has delay and the other has no trial version to try.

That's how the /hpg/ always goes. Its always the same flavor of the month headphones, generally what's on sale on Amazon, when they acquire meme status everyone shits on it.
