do windows and/or linux have something like target disk mode?

What is this, just access the files on another computer?

I just ssh into my linux machine if I need something.

accessing a computer that can't boot in to it's OS. i mostly use it to copy stuff from my laptop to my desktop over firewire.

TDM kinda turns the target computer in to a big external hard drive. It's part of their migration tool thing.

In normal laptops you can just remove hdd/sdd easily. Then you can connect it using usb adapter. Or via hdd caddy/ultrabay.
>>
>>51959258
yeah, but then i have to take the hard drive out and remove another from one of my exclosures, which is what i'm trying to avoid.

Can't you boot from USB stick? And then share disk over network or firewire.
>>
>>51959258
Target disk mode is firmware-level. Linux/Windows won't make a difference.
>>
>>51959295
the computers are all working, I'm just wondering if there's a way to do something similar with my non-mac computers. it's quite convenient for me to transfer files like this.

Target disk mode is a giant hack because there's no live media for OS X. With Linux you just boot from CD, USB, or PXE and go.

Do what? Transfer files via firewire?
You can setup firewire to work as network and then share files via network.
>>
>>51959354
Prove me wrong. Show me an OS X based system that lives entirely on external media rather than just an installer image.
>>
>>51959368
Wait, have you not done this before? You just point the installer at an external drive.

Alternatively, you can clone an internal drive to an external one. OS X will boot fine from there.
>>
>>51959368
literally every version of OSX in the last 8 years can be burned to a usb stick.
>>

to transfer files without having the computer booted.
it's not really a big deal, but i was wondering if linux or windows had a similar feature.

And how would you use windows or linux without booting computer lol?

It can be done on EFI level yes but nobody bothered to implement it.
Linux can share disks via fireware see sbp-target

Target disk runs in the firmware
a macbook with only linux installed can still use target disk mode.
