just because this is a tech-board on 4chan ("that hacking forum for anonymous") doesn't mean anyone here has any knowledge of actual tech or hacking for that matter.

George has done some really amazing shit. He was among the first to get into jailbreaking, having jailbroken both the iPhone and PS3. He has recently gotten into artificial intelligence, is working on his very own self-driving car that strictly uses machine learning, and recently turned down an offer of $1 million USD from Elon fucking Musk to work on self driving cars with Tesla.

By the way, OP, /g/ is a shitty place to ask anything. If you just googled George's name, you'd have seen the article posted about his AI work just three days ago. You're not going to get useful info from the idiots here.

He also backstabbed some of the people working on unlocking the iPhone when it first came out.

I was there. IRC on the real dev channel (the other ones functioned like a sort of unofficial triage of capable people...) where we were working on dissecting the first firmware dump. "geohot" (I think there may have been a 0 in there instead of an 'o', but whatever) was working with the group until he had enough to go off on his own (remember: people had to create their own toolchain for lots of the work since OS X on ARM was new to the outside world at the time), at which point he rushed off to get one phone up and running and to start whoring himself out to the press as the "teenage wonderkid who defeated Apple's security". Really left a bad taste in the mouths of the people who were working together on a solution, and honestly was probably one of the big reasons why the early iPhone hacking scene became as fragmented and secretive as it was.

So yeah, he's a reasonably talented hardware hacker, but he's a completely arrogant little twat.

He didn't took the credit, he said it in the SHARE Conference in Belgrade. Hotz managed to exploit the Hypervisor, however fail0verflow managed to yield the root signing and encryption keys which are essential if you want to install shit on the PS3. Hotz posted those aswell with other Sony exploits. When Sony sued fail0verflow, Hotz was also part of the lawsuit.

"Jailbroken the PS3". Kind of yeah... Not entirely...

He abused a fairly known exploit in the OtherOS feature in the PS3 to write to parts of the HDD which you shouldn't be able to.

I mean, that's pretty cool and all but it didn't actually allow people to install CFW or write homebrew applications. That honor goes to Team FailOverflow which only made the underground info public because GeoHot got the OtherOS feature removed...

>Has some initial success
>Sony panics and sues him
>First he hears of this is when the police break down his front door as he's sleeping and storm the house like he's running an Al-Quaeda cell or a meth lab in his house
>Police let Sony confiscate literally all of his electronics
>Gets arrested and put in jail for a few days for something that isn't even a criminal case
>Finds out that Sony's basically going to throw millions of dollars at this civil suit and that unless he can throw a similar amount at defending himself, he'll be screwed
>Has to sign a contract where he binds himself to never try hacking any Sony products again to make the whole thing go away
>Sony still keeps most of his electronics
Yup... That's why I don't buy Sony products anymore and why the murrican court system is broken as shit.
>>
>>51961646
Really depends what you're doing. C and assembly are for writing malware, and messing with hardware and firmware. Also anything somewhat physical that involves programming a microcontroller, like messing with RFID.

Python, perl etc are for stuff where there's no strict timing requirements and it's running on your own machine. That includes pretty much anything web-based, be it DoS tools like slowloris, stuff that looks for known exploits, stuff that tries common ssh passwords, stuff that tries to crack WEP, etc etc. I guess 90-100% of skiddie stuff is in a high-level language like python or perl.

>>51962437
idk what you think 'hacking' entails but start by being good at normal programming in c and at least one high-level/scripting language. An interesting non-hacking exercise that involves some of the basic skills would be writing a traceroute program in C (that is, one that sends packets with a TTL starting at 0 and incrementing then interprets the replies from routers to get what information is available).

But honestly if you want to "hack that guy that just shot me on CS" then just fuck off.

Nope, that's what actually happened.

The OtherOS community asked him to take a crack at the PS3, Sony freaked out at the possibility CFW enabled piracy on the PS3 (which happened anyway) and had the police go at him like he was running a meth lab out of his basement.

geohot made a pointless exploit in the OtherOS which was the final push for the Sony to remove that functionality. fail0verflow wanted to bring it back so they've cracked the PS3 wide open. geohot then used the hypervisor access to dump the root key. All of them got then sued by Sony.

So? George had only just gotten started when Sony got the cops to bust down the door as he was sleeping and fail0verflow took over where he left off. The fact that Sony sued them over jailbreaking the PS3 is just a shitty thing to do. Not even Apple was shitty enough to actually sue George when he cracked the iPhone.

>George had only just gotten started
After Hotz found that pointless exploit, he said "fuck it, PS3 is secure as fuck" and stopped working on it. Sony removed the OtherOS. fail0verflow steps in and rips PS3 security another one. Hotz then used the fail0verflow's hypervisor access and dumped the root key.

Point is that Hotz himself didn't hack shit on his own, not even the iPhone.
>>
>>51965339
>What am I supposed to do? Join anonimuuse and DDOS PSN with LOIC or something?
I was just pointing out that Sony doesn't care if you "take your business elsewhere," they have millions of other customers. You'll only be hurting yourself, because there are plenty of good Sony products out there. They won't even know why they lost you as a customer, anyway. Plus, companies don't make decisions. People working at companies make decisions. If you were to somehow boycott Sony into failure, the people who made the decisions you didn't like would just get other jobs at different companies, and still make decisions you don't like.

Not only is that not impressive (anyone can work on their own self-driving car, even (You) after reading through some research docs online, provided you have a basic knowledge of machine learning and data analysis, which any college sophomore in CS should have), but the way he is going about it is amateur at best, even in terms of amateur work.

I don't think you understand quite how much knowledge this is. That CS knowledge by itself is not too much work but applying all this to actually get a self driving car is certainly impressive.

Didn't realize that uniq will only filter duplicates if they're right next to each other.
And listing things like base64, tar, bzip2 and xxd as "commands you may need" was a little misleading.
