He's 14 right now and into popular teenager music so I thought a pair of Beats would be nice since they're pleb shit for kids.

http://www.amazon.com/Replacement-Audio-upgrade-Sennheiser-Headphones/dp/B00KAKGQCQ

I'm looking for a replacement cable for an HD5x8, and this looks like the best one. But in one of the amazon comments, it points out that the plug into the left headphone has only two bands while the stock cable has three band connection:

"The original cord that comes with your headphones has 3 rings and 4 sections including the tip. This third party cord only has 2 ring and three sections. Upon contacting sennheiser cs I found out that the additional ring and section that's missing is actually what they referred to as true stereo where as with this cable it will just be basic stereo. The difference is heard in songs that have music going from one side to the other giving almost a 3d soundspace. With this third party cable it really does not sound the same at all. It basically defeats the purpose of your investment for the best sound quality and experience you can get for your buck."

Does this make any fucking sense and will it make that much of a difference? Anyone have experience with this specific cord?

Basically if there was a venn diagram with one circle of genres that the akg 702 was good at representing and another circle of genres that this hypothetical pair of headphones I want to buy was good at representing, I'd want the genres within the area where the circles met to be as few as possible.

Either sell them to finance better headphones or save up for better headphones.

> You are using these Senns to listen to your old phone? And your laptop? And then you're finding fault with the sound? And you're blaming the headphones for that? Any headphone is only as good as its source material. I think we can safely assume your problem lays there and not the phones.

Do the HD598 really sound bad from a laptop? do they have wide soundstage?
>>
>>51964829
first of all the 558s are the same thing after a small mod and a lot cheaper
secondly soundstage is not real, it just means your fr graph is a rollercoaster so things seem to be different distances when theyre actually just different volumes
>>
>>51964881
Soundstage or "headstage" is real. Your source or whatever you are plugging them into has no effect on it though.

HD 598/HD 558/HD 518 can sound pretty meh if you are using them from a jack with a high output impedance. This is not something that is common with laptops though.

>HD598 really sound bad from a laptop?
Not necessarily any worse that they normally.
That quote is one of the dumber things related to audio I've read recently.

>>51965090
It's not real in that if you get used to it, you can eliminate the in-head sound and make mental adjustments to positioning errors.
Frequency magnitude is a factor in this, as it often is with audio perception.
>>
>>51965158
>Frequency magnitude is a factor in this, as it often is with audio perception.
Of course but assuming your source and device driving the headphones is not altering frequency response, they are not going to affect the perceived open-ness or "headstage" of the headphones either.

leaving the soundstage aside, what about instruments' separation and detail? are those good on the HD 598?
>>
>>51965386
most likely. "instrument separation" just means the headphone is more neutral than not.
>>
>>51965386
Could be better. This comes from the frequency response, the 598/558/58 have too much upper bass/midbass, to start with.
You might want to EQ this out, and fill in the region the region below 60Hz some, maybe.
>>
>>51965449
>the 598/558/58 have too much upper bass/midbass
Strange, I've always heard that HD598 bass is barely audible...well, it won't be a problem to me at all, since I'd like to listen to rock and pop with them
>>
>>51965508
I mean the region around 150Hz, upper bass and not the lower bass. You can stand to adjust the high midrange some more while you are at it.
>>
>>51965386
That's practically just frequency response and HD 598(or HD 558) is very good in this regard. Close to neutral response.
>>
>>51965409
>>51965699
By instruments' separation I mean that instruments are clearly distinguished and separated, honestly I didn't know that this expression is tied to the neutral response. >>51965596
ok thanks. Do you think that they would be good to listen to rock/electronic/pop music then? I heard some reviewers say that HD598 sound a bit "slow" and lack bass impact, which worries me a little...

Comfortable enough to wear for hours, something with velour earpads would be amazing.

V-shaped, but I wouldn't mind a neutral/flat tone either. What I want is:

Pop, electronic, rock, prog, acoustic, songwriters, blues, a bit of jazz and classical.
>Past headphones
Fidelio X2. I want to ask Amazon a refund because I got 2 pairs and they all had bad issues both build- and sound-wise. They sounded as congested and dark as a closed headphone, I want to experience a really open and airy sound.
>>
>>51966041
"Slow" is from the upper bass excess. "Impact" is from the lack of low bass is has.
While not everything is the magnitude in the frequency domain, it tends to overwhelmingly dominate everything else in the sound.

>>51966139
Run through the checklist:
-Is it loud enough?
-Is the output impedance too high (mostly fixable by equalization)?
-Is there noise/EMI or hiss to it?
-Does it sound distorted as you start to crank up the volume?
If you can't answer yes to any of these, don't bother.
>>
>>51966400
Why do you like V shaped? Just wondering

Doesn't that mean you have substandard mids?
>>
>>51966507
Because V-shaped is usually more suitable to the music I like. However, the tonal balance isn't as important as the thing I wrote after that. I'd like to try a flat headphone, so I'm open to suggestions.

>>
>>51966755
I'm interested in the K702 infact. They're sold for 205 € on italian Amazon, plus a Fiio e10K (roughly 80 €) would meet my budget requirements. There are two things about them I find a bit scary though:
1) comfort. Are the bump below the headband a problem? Do all the AKG K702 have them? Because the image of the AKG K702 on italian Amazon doesn't show any bumps.
2) detail: I love the idea of hearing a lot of things in the music, but I heard many people say that the amount of details can make the headphone sound analytical to the point the music isn't enjoyable.
What's your opinion?
>>
>>51967078
i dont own them so i cant comment on comfort. no one seems to have any problems with them though, from what ive read

this detail thing youre speaking of is simply how neutral the headphone is, assuming the headphone can reproduce all audible sound. that means you do not want a v-shape at all, but neutral. the k702 is great for this

>>
>>51967173
the more neutral a headphone is, the more detail you're going to notice. this is because sounds will be closer in magnitude, without certain frequencies overpowering others. of course, this assumes that the hardware of the headphone is capable of reproducing those frequencies in the first place. this is no problem for the k702, so the last thing to worry about is how neutral it is, and it is quite neutral.

i could have told you that the x2 would not be for you for sure. i am certain that even if you dont find the k702 to be perfect, you will like it more than the x2.
>>
>>51967078
Different anon here, once owned it.
>1) comfort. Are the bump below the headband a problem? Do all the AKG K702 have them? Because the image of the AKG K702 on italian Amazon doesn't show any bumps.
This has been revised out in the more recent versions from China. Even when it had bumps, my old Austrian model, it still wasn't as bad as the original 701, which had a lump right on the center of the skull.
>2) detail: I love the idea of hearing a lot of things in the music, but I heard many people say that the amount of details can make the headphone sound analytical to the point the music isn't enjoyable.
I don't hear it. 701/702 has a wiggly FR in the mids and highs, there are some peaks, but also dips to its sound. Like most headphones, it lacks a straightforward upward tilt.
702 is somewhat midbassy, but this seems to vary a bit from person to person.
>What's your opinion?
It was okay. More dull than people might have implied.
>>
>>51967222
The main reason why I'm going to give my X2 away is its lack of soundstage and its congested sound reproduction. I'm thinking about the AKG K702 because I'd really love a spatious, airy presentation with clear, natural sound.

>>51967249
Thank you for your opinions. Some questions:
> don't hear it
Do you mean the detail or the analytical sound?
> lacks a straightforward upward tilt
Please explain
> somewhat midbassy
This should be a good thing for listening to modern music genres, isn't it?
> more dull
In a negative or a positive way?
>>
Are there any open back IEMs?
>>
>>51967433
>Do you mean the detail or the analytical sound?
Can I say both? I've don't hear the extreme detail, nor does it sound that "analytical". It has bass and a dip in the lower treble, between 2-6kHz, which the peaks that the 701 has.
>Please explain
Most "bright" headphones have bass, plenty of it. It can have a marked midrange plunge, giving it a slight V-shape. That's why I say few things are just bright.
As an example, people whine about the HD800 treble, but it lacks in the midrange and has a very broad boost centered around the upper bass. It's also just a couple of peaks in the case of HD 800.
>This should be a good thing for listening to modern music genres, isn't it?
I suppose, but let's get into the "it varies" part. K702 bass can be a little variable when it is worn, a bit more than the typical open dynamic.
It wasn't THAT midbass heavy either, and it rolled off the extreme lows a bit.
>In a negative or a positive way?
It wasn't treble torture (good), but it had treble notches that impacted clarity and "presence".

>>51967578
Vented, and yes.
The typical electro-dynamic driver IEM is heavily vented, only a few a closed enough to have strong isolation.
How little isolation do you want it to have?
>>
>>51968106
Thank you for the infos.
> K702 bass can be a little variable when it is worn
Basically, what does this imply? does this mean that you should put extra care on the position you wear the headphones?
>>
>>51968807
Yeah, that. Headphones don't couple perfectly to the head for all people, and 701 suffers a little more for the lack of sealing.
The pads affect this somewhat.
>>
>>51969272
I see. What should the ideal position be? Ears in the centre of the earpads, or slightly forward/backward?

I can do all the research on them. I just suck at finding them. If they need a DAC or amp I'd like to know that as well.
>>
>>51969389
Ideal for sound is just however makes it have the most bass. You have to fiddle around with that yourself. Nudge excess hair out of way, reorient the angled pads (they come off) to fill in the jawbone/mastoid gap better, and so on.
