DDR3 was $50 for 16 GB. DDR4 isn't anywhere close to that.
>>
>>51943805
How was this comparison even generated? You can't compare DDR3 and DDR4 fairly without swapping out entire motherboard, chipsets and CPUs.

>>51943835

Pray tell where you find such a price because I am in need of some DDR3 sticks.
Amazon wants $73 for 2x8GB.

There is no difference between DDR3-2133 CL10 and DDR4-2133 CL10. No shit, sherlock.

>>51943927
Not sure about how much the board matter, but if you want to genuinely compare them, you need two kits with the same latency, eg. DDR3-1600 CL8 vs DDR4-3200 CL16. A lot reviews compare DDR3-1600 CL8 against DDR4-2133 CL15, and then wonder, why it sucks.
>>
>>51943927
>Pray tell where you find such a price because I am in need of some DDR3 sticks.
I would guess that was the price you could get it for before that tsunami fucked up a bunch of countries where RAM is produced a few years ago. I know DDR3 was stupid cheap in those days, and it's almost there again, but it's not going to make it quite back down to those prices now that DDR4 is here.

They have a research center in Israel.

That said, I'd find it hard to believe if AMD also don't have jews in their organization, and RMS, who this board seemingly worships, is also 200% jewish nationality-wise, so I'm not exactly sure what people imply by calling others jews when it's kind of pointless name calling; they're fucking everywhere and on every side of every coin, what does it matter?

It is said that the worst anti-semites are jews themselves, so pay attention, the people calling others out on being jews were probably lighting up a menorah recently.

>not getting ECC sticks
>>
My current computer is a laptop with a Haswell CPU. To use DDR4, I would have to acquire a new system, which I cannot afford to do at the current moment.
>>
>>51943698
dude it's unreal, as last year it was like £50-60 for 8gb of DDR3 1600 now it's £30-40 for 8gb DDR4 2133.
>>
>>51945101
What do you do that's so important that it needs ECC? Do you even leave your computer on overnight?
>>
Because I literally just upgraded my motherboard right before DDR4 came out, and the actual benefits seem useless at this point.

When I upgrade in like 4-5 years? Sure.
>>
Because it's basically a whole new pc list of parts to upgrade for a marginal performance increase.

Also:

>>
>>51943698
my laptop and desktop motherboard don't support it. It's ok though. I'm not bitter.

I just ordered Crucial 8GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3L 1600 (PC3L 12800) for my laptop which will max it as it only has one slot.
>>
I'm buying a PC soon, I was going to get a Haswell i5 with a H81 mobo and DDR3

Should I get a skylake i5 (say a 6500) and DDR4 instead?
>>
>>51947894
Skylake locked parts are now overclockable, and the 6500 actually gains a shitload.

As of now you need the pricy Z170 boards but if you wait it might be possible on the cheaper chipsets.

whats the point even
>>

Because I only recently built my computer.

I also don't want to have to hunt for a motherboard that has non-broken IOMMU/VT-d support again.
>>
>>51943698
because i'm waiting on zen, my computer is powerful enough to get me by, and if u upgrade now, i would rather get a used intel cpu than a new one.

zen, if it is even half what it claims, offers me more than intel would and would be a significant upgrade.

The chance is insanely small, on the order of once a month for an average home PC. And even then a corrupt bit in a multi-gig system is like expecting climate change from pouring a hot cup of water into the sea. Windows users don't notice this anyway done their programs and systems are crashing all the time regardless.

>>51948394
Bit flips are extremely uncommon. On regular consumer machines there's not a lot that can really be affected because regular people don't do a lot of important things on their machines in the first place. A bit flip on a consumer machine might lead to a change as minuscule as one pixel having a slightly different shade of red compared to the rest in a video game. And the flip only lasts until the next time that bit is updated so it may not even last more than a second anyway.

In a web server the RAM might be occupied with very important information that doesn't change often for an extended period of time. A bit flip here might lead to false information or data that is completely corrupted.
>>
>>51943927
>can't compare fairly without swapping out entire motherboard
Um, get a Z170 motherboard that supports DDR3 and DDR4?
>>
>>51948769
If a bit flips in executable kernel memory the OS will probably crash next time it tries to run that portion of memory.

>>
>>51948724
Since ECC corrects single bit errors, the chances of being affected(2 bit failure) is astronomical.
>>
>>51948823
Well there's billions of bits in modern machine and flips don't happen very frequently. A single flip landing in just the right spot to trigger a crash is not very likely, it's possible though.

So is this just bad modules that they bought or modules that went bad over the course of the test?
>>
>>51949303
I'm guessing these are modules that went bad over the course of time from some sort of corruption, in the case of non-ECC RAM the reasons are considerably more varied than simply "there was a basic hardware failure".

I'm not entirely sure if all such failures would lead to the RAM stick flat out breaking, a reboot usually solves the problem unless the hardware was already flawed and predisposed to go bad.

In any case, there is little downside to using ECC, the price isn't much higher, it's only 3-11% slower even in fringe cases where memory is the bottleneck, and most consumer Intel CPUs have Xeon equivalents for a tiny premium that will work in many regular boards, assuming they claim support for them (models marked with W or WS usually)

It's only worth it on prodution boxes. It's for the, "we have a contract, and restarting long running jobs could but is behind schedule" situations. And even then, you bring the box down and swap the RAM out at the first possible opportunity.

DDR4 was meant for servers wasn't it? It was designed with thermals and power usage in mind not so much throughput, but DDR4 is slightly faster.
