How long does DDing a drive take /g/? First time doing it, I'm installing arch and thought it would be a good idea to wipe the drive before I begin the install. Wiping ubuntu off it.

Takes forever; next time use "pv" to see your progress.

not forever if it's /dev/zero. depends on some invisible things.
How long does it usually take you to copy 931.5GB of files? It's going to take that long.
Is it necessary for me to do this?

>op is a faggot
you bought a one terrabyte drive to run linux?
>>51941141
I didn't want to touch my windows installation.
/dev/zero is pretty fast relatively speaking, it will probably take 1-4 hours. /dev/random would take all night most likely or even longer.
>>51941136
If you have personal information on the drive and want to make sure it can't be reclaimed it's not a bad idea.
>>51941018
Forgive my retardedness, but what am I looking at here?

>op is a nigger
if you read the op he's trying to remove ubuntu
>>51941151
lmao
>>51941185
Oh then that's a dumb idea. OP you could have just deleted the partitions.
Totally unnecessary. Only reason to do this is if you sell it.

Ubuntu was my firsr experience with Linux on my desktop. Didn't want to wipe Windows. Probably wont do that for a while.
>>51941177
He's writing 0's to the entire drive. When you do a fast format the actual files still exist on the drive until they're written over.
>>51941222
running linux on a one terrabyte drive is still retarded.
Writing an entire drive takes forever using any tool because of the physical limitations of the disc.
Especially spinning drives which are huge and slow... Try writing a full 4 TB to a spinning disk.
Windows format doesn't even touch the sectors anymore, only the partition table.
dd, spinrite, etc. touches every sector.

Explain?

How so?

Retards detected.
Quality of /g/ has progressively gone downhill.
>>51941230
Ah, thanks.
>>51941151
well then you shouldn't have formatted over it

?
SDA is my windows drive.
SDB is my linux drive
>>51941919
I don't think he understands what he's looking at.
>>51941018
depends on the write speed of the hdd
lets say it was 80M/s, over 930G, that'd be ~3.3 hours

also, if you're not selling the hdd or something, a simple wipefs will be fine, takes a secondwipefs -af /dev/sdb

Stock, my windows installs have either 3 or 4 partitions depending on if I wiped the recovery partition or not and my linux installs would have either one or two partitions depending on if I had a swap file or not. At first glance, it LOOKS to me like linux is sda and windows is sdb.
damn op you have a lot of porn
dcfldd is more accurate, forensically sound, and displays speed. However, for wiping you should consider srm or shred instead.

next time, in an other therminal issue the following command:
pkill -SIGUSR1 dd
on USR1 signal dd will give you some status updates.
