I have many issues with skype and microshit but all my friends use skype. Need an alternative that has skype features but isn't shit so that they can be converted

Need:
>voip that doesn't bomb your internet
>quality video chat
>text chat transfers between computers
>good group chat functionality

Said friends don't give a shit about privacy so encryption is only a bonus, not a selling point.

They had a webapp web.linphone.org you could use, but they literally discontinued it today (https://www.linphone.org/news/41/26/Linphone-web-forced-discontinuation.html)
https://linphone.org

https://ostel.co
Let's you install your own server + webapp with Kamailio +Ruby on Rails

This is looking great so far, it may be exactly what we're looking for. This is also nifty since there are a lot of cases where people will need to be in a voip call only once or twice, so the browser functionality is good.

>>51933687
none of that looks bad, but how polished are they? couple of friends and I tried out tox earlier since we heard good things about it, but it's definitely not at that level of polish yet and is a bit buggy. I also need to emphasize the ease of use that's going to be required; my casual friends aren't gonna want to jump through hoops to get this shit to work

In order of quality:

>Firefox Hello
>Google Hangouts

Ring is tox level of alpha

Linphone and Ostel are production ready

Dolby axon is nice, although not meeting some of your criteria

+1 for this. Setting up a server is also fucking easy.

Get other friends without skype
>>
Telegram maybe?
>>
>>51933876
>google hangouts
really that made your short list...
>>
>>51934760
what's wrong with hangouts?
>>
>>51933641
I tried out discord and the audio servers did not work at all. Neither my friends nor I could chat, kept getting "No Route" with no evident solution upon googling. Not a good first impression, though it did look pretty.
>>
>>51933641
No video calls

>>51933876
Nobody uses Firefox

>>51935146
and Google Hangouts uses 100% CPU

>>51934184
No video calls, discord is better than axon though

>>51934702
No Audio or Video calls
If telegram were to add these on a desktop client along with their mobile clients, they could take a large chunk of Skype's market
>>
Is there any other benefit to mumble over Discord now, except
>Open source
And discord requiring no setup and is free.

At this point I might have to make sacrifices since apparently skype is the only significant chat client with decent video, depressingly enough.

There are these places outside called "Starbucks" they are very good for chatting

lol, it's almost as if I have buddies that aren't right down the street.

Yahoo re-launched their messenger. It's interesting. To me, it looks like what 2015-16 needs, or rather, what we should have gotten a long time ago.

MSN died, people were on skype. But why use so many different platforms? Skype for pc/or its alternatives, whatsapp for phones/or its alternatives.
Yahoo is the only one who offers the whole package.

Too bad it probably won't matter since no one will use it. I tried to get my friends to install it but they just didn't want to.

The whisper option is an optional thing. You dont need to use it all the time. You can keep all your chat logs or just "whisper" some pron to someone
