Yeah it's that old, this shit was cutting edge when I brought it. It's still more ascetically beautiful (and lighter) than any new laptops coming out today.

What drive needs to come out? HDD or DVD? Would this shit still boot / bios to this level if the memory was fucked?
DESU I love this laptop, but hes traveled many miles, had a shit load of uptime (in fact acted as a server for a popular onion site) and has been dropped from ~6 foot onto concrete. I would love to save it though, I have a spare HDD from an old macbook that I can shove in it and a bunch of crucial memory DIMMs. However, I'd like to know WTF is going on before I do anything... this flashing ass cursor diagnostic is fucking useless to me.

I have an "old" Vaio myself, and can certainly understand your feelings for it.
It's possible but very unlikely that RAM is the issue, seeing as the laptop get through POST and into BIOS settings. I'd try to remove the HDD and see if it likes a different drive better, based on my guess that your boot sector/drive is borked. Shame it doesn't take S-ATA.
You could also try booting with no drives at all to see if it goes "No boot devices" on ya.
