I fully agree with you right there.
I was quite opposed to onscreen buttons until my last two phones had then I think kit may actually be better. They can never break and can be customized and most apps will still make use of the screen room and hide the bottom bar when not in use

Not a single button on any of my phones ever broke. The only thing that stopped working was the control stick of my K800i and that piece of ass died on every K800i I've ever seen.
That being said, I think there are better ways to implement on-screen controlls. The way BB OS10 or Sailfish OS approach it f.e. It is way more intuitive and you don't minimize your video on accident when lying in bed.
