I got fios last and their speeds are god tier.....but i hate their router. how do i return the thing so i can use my own and not have to pay their $10 rental fee?
>>
G1100? You can't give those pieces of shit back.
>>
>>51928814
install gentoo
>>
Literally just plug your router into the ONT. You're done. It's not like you need a modem like with cable internet.
>>
>>51929646
the quantuam router not the ONT, i dont want to pay the damn $10 fee from verizon to rent their shit.
>>
>>51929709
ye i know that part but i dont want to pay the damn 10 dollar rental fee. i want to return their shitty router. i am an internet only customer so i know i dont need the thing like the video customers do.
>actually paying for linear cable tv

The ONT has an ethernet port, so all you need is a switch, not a router. Best time to have the port enabled is during install. And get it without TV cuz they'll shove the router on you since the TV needs it for guide information or some sth,

You have to, its a modem and a router. You can disable wifi from the quantum gateway and simply hook up your own router via ethernet from the quantum gateway, but to access the verison network you need a verizon modem in your house.

The quantum gateway just happens to also be a decent 802.11AC router as well as a modem.

FiOS customer of 8 years.

Depends on your area sadly, some areas refuse to allow anything but MOCA, which means you need their router.

However, if your speed tier is over 100/100mb/s they should allow it to run over ethernet as MOCA starts getting fishy above 150mb/s
>>
FiOS customer since 2010 here. If you're really just using Internet, call and have them change from MoCA to Ethernet. They can do this remotely. If they give you any shit about requiring an onsite visit ask to escalate.

Google "fios use own router" for some great guides. They give you the script for calling Verizon, releasing your DHCP lease on the FiOS modem, etc.
>>
>>51932740
Depends where you are, before they offered above 100Mbps speeds around here they refused to allow you to use the ethernet from the ONT. But once they bumped up the speeds to 500/500mbps they have started to allow it for any speed package over 100/100

If you have 75/75 or 50/50 they still try to use MoCA though. Even on internet only installations.

>having to rent an ISP router
holy fuck that's dumb UK ISPs give you free routers, modems and STBs.
>>
>>51932797
I'll clarify I've been a Massachusetts customer since 2010. YMMV in other states. I've never had an issue getting the Ethernet port activated across multiple sites, both Residential and Business.

My smallest site is 50/50 Residential with an Apple AirPort and my largest is 300/300 Business with a Juniper SRX.
>>
>>51933054
Yeah, I personally suspect it will switch over to ethernet being the standard once the upgrade from G-PON to 10G-PON installation occurs in this area in 2016/17.
>>
>>51932540
fios has no modems. you can use your own router connected to the ONT. the router is ONLY necessary if you get FIOS tv.
>>
>>51932797
already used ethernet from the ONT on setup. Just want to know for any body who has already done it if they will accept my return of the router so I dont have to pay a $10 rental fee.
>>51932839
ISP provided routers and modems are dogshit tier. I rather they provided me with credits to a better router.
>>
>>51933437
>if they will accept my return of the router so I dont have to pay a $10 rental fee.
they should no problem.

>>51933409
>. you can use your own router connected to the ON
as has been discussed in this thread it depends entirely on where you are.

FiOS has different policies depending on region.
>>
>>51933437
over here ISP routers come with AC, gigabit and usb ports for printers and storage.
>>
>>51933539
I can buy a tp link ac router for 30 dollars on amazon but its shit tier and these are usually better than ISP provided ones. The newer AC routers have beamforming tech in them which instead of just throwing signal everywhere like a sperge it directs the signal narrowly at the object.

The one from FiOS is actually one of the best being given out by ISPs in the US.

It has 1 gigabit ethernet WAN. 4 gigabit ethernet LAN, 802.11AC 5ghz and 2.4Ghz wifi and 2 USB ports.

It's just being charged $10 a month for it kinda sucks when it should only cost $100-150.
>>
>>51933583

the FiOS one has beamforming

i have this exact model and its coverage is worse than my old tp link one. lack of external antennas must be the problem and yes 10 dollars for infinity is a shit deal. 2 years and you pay $240 for something that is $200. I can find insanely better routers at that price.
>>
>>51928814
i have to say, as far as isp-specific routers go, theirs are boss. i didn't want to pay a monthly fee though, so i bought one off some chink on craigslist for $50

Odd, this is what I get with my phone from 2 floors away

Before I got the quantum gateway the previous 802.11N router they had me on would max out around 35-50Mb/s over wifi.

So the quatum gateway is MUCH improved.
>>
>>51933586
why not just give it free, instead of gouging an extra $10 out of everyone.
>>
>>51933685
in my apartment i get around 50mbps through 2 walls on the same floor with my Chromecast 2 on 5ghz band.
>>
>>51933717
>Chromecast
to be fair, chromcast is pretty notorious for being shit on 5Ghz wifi.

>>51933712
Yeah, they do the same with set top boxes as well, but so do all the other ISPs in this country, so it's nothing unusual here.
>>
>>51933712
we live in jewmerica where you cant even legally store rain water.>>51933717
by coparison AC should deliver around 200 to 400 in that distance. its an apartment not a large house too.
>>

>device made for streaming
>wifi band made for streaming
> somehow its shit tier on that band on this device
Bravo Jewgle.
>>
>>51933791
yeah, I guess that's partly why it's so cheap.
