Is there any reason to use a different distro for a desktop environment?

>It just werks

>Commonly used software is installed out of the box

>Codecs and drivers are automatically installed

>Only botnet is their shitty search addon

>You don't need to add repos like RPM fusion

>Relatively stable

>A new version comes out every few months

>Software isn't out of date like Debian stable
>>
>>51924598
mint is a okay distro in general but if your computer is really so old and shitty that it's not worth shelling out for a win7 license then maybe consider LXDE for your desktop environment?
>>
>>51924598
>Software isn't out of date like Debian stable
It's, for most cases, placebo and for others there is backports.
>>
>>51924709
>if your computer is really so old and shitty that it's not worth shelling out for a win7 license

LOL

You're doing it wrong. Windows goes on shitty old boxes that normies use. If I have hardware with actual power, it's Linux all the way.
>>
>>51924598
>it just werks
Don't care, 30 minutes is nothing to get a functional environment

>Commonly used software
What they think is commonly used*

Bloatware.

>Codecs and drivers are automatically installed
Welcome to almost anything running the linux kernel.

>Only botnet is their shitty search addon
Botnet is a meme and only a viable argument for Chrome OS, Windows Vista and future versions.

>You don't need to add repos like RPM fusion
Countered by the horrible version and dependency management of Apt and the little functionality it brings. Repos are quite small, too.

>Stable
As is plenty of other, better distros.

>A new version comes out every month.
That doesn't matter if you're looking for a stable desktop OS, as long as it stays up to date with current major versions. You can always manually install things yourself, too, including new versions of the Linux Kernel that mint hasn't caught up to.

>Software isn't out of date like Debian stable
See above point.

Mint is alright for a beginners OS, or if you really don't use your computer much, but there are a lot of better choices when it comes to a full-time desktop OS.

>>51924752
This is incorrect.
>>
>Install mint
>cinnamon,crashes every 30min
>install kubuntu
>everything just works

>This is incorrect.

Remind us again what percentage of the world's top 500 fastest computers run Windows, and what percentage of them run Linux?
>>
>>51924913
Yeah, I know. But from what I understand from the OP, this thread is about desktop OS's. The majority of high end desktop users, that don't use it for work or anything overly productive, use Windows.
>>
>>51924762
>Linux mint = beginner distro meme
Gorhill even uses Mint. It's a good distro if you don't want a timesink OS
>>
>>51924943
but there are a lot of better choices when it comes to a full-time desktop OS.
>>
>>51924955
I'm sorry, but do you mind elaborating? Why isn't Mint a good choice for a full time desktop OS compared to something else?
>>
>>51924978
Aptitude, bloatware preinstalled, slower release cycle. Ubuntu based distros are generally pretty stay-clear anyway, unless you're a server owner.

Debian testing/minimal would be just as good a choice. Mint also bases itself off of the DEs offered, so if you want to use something else, again it feels very bloated.
>>
Mint has sane defaults.

That's all there is to it, no magic. Just sane defaults, unlike most other distros.
>>
Why not just run Debian with Cinnamon? skip all the middlemen.
>>
>>51925100

Shit.

I didn't notice the pic was of LMDE

but I am. Runs bretty good even on this bargain bin mItx I built for general browsing and school. And porn. Mostly Porn. Like 95% porn.

Seeing how long I can keep this machine on before it fails or hardware dies.

jesus christ if i had to use such an oudtaed kernel id kill myself

rolling release distros are the only sane way to use linux

17.3 is out
why haven't you update?
it's easy, yo!

Mint is stable as fuk. Used Pclinuxos had newer repos but wasn't as stable as mint. Probably put arch on my desktop soon for more of a challenge and learning wince mint just werks. but keep mint on the thinkpad since I need it for work.

>>51924709
Pay for botnet? No way.
>>
>>51925671
The best way to use open suse is with gnome. I have no idea why they push KDE so much when their gnome version is so much better
>>

>>51925426
Mint is completely okay!
>distro elitarism

>>
>>51924598
Lubuntu is more stable and just as easy to get running with no botnet.
>>
Cinnamon random freezes are confirmed. The 17.2 version of mint froze every day for me, couldn't even switch to a different TTY. I went on a fucking rampage after it froze while I was in the middle of my work with 4 virtual machines, 30 pages of browser tabs and an IDE open. I installed Kubuntu 14.04 ~2 months ago, everything is fine since. I don't like the looks, but a functional desktop is better than an instable one.
>>
After trying tons of distros, I gotta say I like Mint the best.
>>
>>51924598
nope
mint is literally perfect
>>
>>51924709
I can't stand LXDE for some reason. XFCE is a nice choice though if you want a light desktop.
>>
If you have constant freezes, maybe you should blame your current kernel.
>>
>>51927529
I used cinnamon on my system and ran if for 17 days without a single freeze.
I used libre-office, gimp, vlc, chromium and other small applications until I decided to try out Xfce.

Why? If you have a powerful computer, it's usually for gaming, where Windows reigns supreme, or for a workstation, where it depends, but for most use cases where your work requires powerful hardware, Windows is usually the best option.
It's the worst alternative, but the most used.
>>
>>51926339

I have a x61 tablet and it runs perfectly fine.

You're either talking shit, fucking up somewhere or your t61 is fucked.
>>
>>51924762
What did Mint do to you when you were a child?
>>
>>51924598
>just werks

This is just a less pathetic sounding way of saying that you want your hands held and all the thinking done for. You better hope that it always continues to just werk though, because if you ever run into serious trouble it's going to be much harder to fix. That is because to just werk the system needs to be inherently more complicated than is reasonable, and since it was just seeking you never bothered to learn how it works, or what a complete mess it actually is beneath all those GUIs, wizards, and such easy-mode horse shit. Laziness and willful ignorance will bite you in the ass hard sooner or later.

>>51924598
Suck my indecisive cock. Linux Mint is the worst implementation of Ubuntu next to ElementaryOS.

It has so much bloat and unwanted "Mint" integration in Firefox and other places, it took me hours to locate the malicious files and manually clean everything up but still my autism was not resting.

Just use Ubuntu Minimal CD to install the core and then clean install Cinnamon DE without any bloat or unwanted packages. I would recommend Xfce+Compton but seeing as your are a massive faggot, go with Cinnamon.
>>
>>51924913
>Remind us again what percentage of the world's top 500 fastest computers run Windows, and what percentage of them run Linux?

You're confusing a desktop (consumer) environment with a server (commercial) environment.
>>
>>51929094
>ElementaryOS

Should be a desktop environment and not need an entire patched OS just to work...
>>
>>51929094
This sounds very reasonable. I experienced a bug where I'm unable to use my mouse half of the time and consider switching. Thanks.
>>
>>51925019
Debian uses apt as well...

Manjaro xfce is a good alternative to mint. Much faster. Though some shit is more buggy.
