People are absolutely not good enough. We are inherently imperfect, and to act well is a daily struggle. Why would we showcase that, except to show triumph over it? Is it not more optimal to present an ideal to strive for? I do not see the slice of life/moe ouvre as a rejection of reality; rather, it is a call to arms. It holds up a mirror, but rather than showing us the ugly side of our nature it shows us what we could be. It calls on us to find beauty and peace in the mundane, and to accept vulnerability, and to cut off and cast away our testicles.

Moe characters aren't all one dimensional, but they are not human, at least in any extent I've seen in real life.
Moe isn't harmful, I just think it should be taken in small doses. As I said before, I find the mindset that we shouldn't showcase our flaws and our struggle to be sad. Its who we are, and we can't divorce ourselves from that if we really want to become the best we can be.

I think this is where we are at odds. I find the intent of art is important, but the effect to be important also. If its goal is to be comfy, well moe is comfy. But if moe is a call to arms to better humanity then its failing at its job, and producing the opposite effect in my opinion. When you fail at your job I think you should be judged for it. Regardless if your audience is poor.
For example, the movie Spring Breakers ran orthogonal to its audience at premiere, but that was by design. Its a rejection and an attack of the type of people who were drawn in by the ads. Its interaction with its audience is essential.
It also is a problem when people who feel this way are the ones feeding the industry. Creating a demand for similar content. You don't see a mass rebuke of the otaku because otaku are what bring in the money.

I don't think it's necessary to position the art as oppositional to the audience; I think it's more effective to demonstrate a claim by allowing the viewer to experience it, rather than by showing them someone else experiencing it. The allure of moe, to me, is that the experience is external to the anime; the cute girls are pleasant to watch, and by experiencing this pleasant world the viewer is inspired to adjust their behavior to recreate it. Failure to achieve this is exemplified by the average con-goer, but at the same time their behavior is evidence of the validity of the dialectical technique. Though they focus on saying things like "squee" and "glomp", the intention is clear: to become more like the characters, despite never having been directly urged.
Neither do I accept that escapism is a negative thing, or that indulgence in it is unacceptable. Again: people are imperfect, and we should not expect each individual to exemplify the ideal man. If a thing is pleasant, of course we should expect people to seek it out. Indeed, if that thing is more pleasant than engagement in the "real" world, haven't the creators done a positive thing by facilitating the existance of that space? I think a "mass rebuke of the otaku", far from being desirable, to be morally unacceptable.

I think you are misunderstanding my argument at the core.
Going top to bottom:
I agree, I don't believe that its necessary. I was just using an example of a piece of art who's interaction was necessary for its interpretation and value. I think all discussions should be held with a position of empathy. We shouldn't look down upon the people the way Harmony Korine did in Spring Breakers. But it worked in starting a more empathetic discussion and was provoking, so it can't be docked regardless.
I am not saying escapism is a negative thing or that indulgence of it is unacceptable. I am saying that using escapism as an attempt to separate yourself from humanity instead of an attempt to improve it is a negative thing.
You use examples of trying to become like the characters as proof that people are making an attempt. To me that attempt feels superficial. I am friends with hardcore otaku. I post here all the time. I've been to multiple conventions. I watch lots of anime. I know these are all anecdotes, but I an not separated from the community. I experience it. In these experiences, otaku long to have the anime worlds affect them, not for them to make the world more like the anime worlds. This is understandable, for humans are selfish sometimes and flawed, but I fail to see any evidence that moe inspires altruistic or even selfish desires to make the world better.
