so how would you suggest that sites make internet-accessible services (not just websites, but we can start there and work our way to other stuff if that's easier) financially solvent?
would you go with an upfront cost? there are some services where that makes sense, but i wouldn't want to pay an entry fee just to kick the tires of every site i see, and i don't think anyone likes the micropayments that drive downloadable videogame content.

I think the best way for people to get rid of this paranoid mentality about power is to work in a public institution for a few years.
