What's the optimum amount of RAM for non-gayming PCs?
IMHO that's 4GB since Windows 10 has a very nice memory management. Also I'm pretty sure the only acceptable way to get nice performance is to optimize software, NOT get as much resources as you can so shitty software can waste 2-3 times more RAM As it should.

My 11 inch netbook has 4GB RAM (pic rel), server 8GB, phone 1GB and x86 android tablet 2GB.
I don't need more because I'm not a gayming edgy 15 year old.

been using 4gb for about 4-5 years now, I want to upgrade to 8 but I cannot find a reason.
I also have another computer with 1gb ram, 1gb definitely is not enough, all I use on it is terminal and even that maxes out the ram when writing and testing bash scripts.

RAM is cheap; you have no reason to not have at least 8GB, if not 16GB for SSD assistant programs.
There is no downside to having more RAM (up to 16GB), even if all you're doing is browsing.
I think 8GB is the optimum amount of RAM even for non-gayming PCs. I only have 6GB and I kinda wish I had 2GB more. You can multitask heavily on 8GB of RAM compared to 4GB of RAM.
Also RAM is getting cheap and $40 will get you 8GB of DDR3 RAM.

I don't game and I regularly use 8GB of RAM just from browsing/general usage and running RAPID mode on my SSD.

i have 4GB on the desktop i'm using right now and it supports medium browsing very very well, i also do a lot of graphic design and i haven't seen any problem at all, even with heavy documents on illustrator/indesign/photoshop. 2GB is not enough for browsing though, start 3/4 heavy tabs and a second program in background and you're done. 8GB for more intensive applications (heavy video compositing), 16gb for intensive rendering (even if vRAM is probably more important), 32GB to show you can afford it
