Basically, what he's saying is that it's not, in fact, a self-driving car, but the moniker makes it hip and cool and who cares that real self-driving cars are now seen as inferior than what they are teehee~ XD
>>
>>51912827
Hotz is very much the "shoot first, ask questions later" sort of engineer. And in some ways that's good. We need people like that. They can prototype and make progress quickly. But that progress isn't necessarily production ready, despite the press's inability to understand that. Just like in software: it's easy to put together a cool demo, but actually building a usable product is an order of magnitude harder.

Google could have taken their self-driving car out on public roads many, many, many years ago. They could have invited a reporter out onto a busy freeway the very first time they thought they had the car working. But they decided to do things like "test it" before putting the system in control of a car on the freeway with other cars. Hotz apparently has no problems skipping that step.

That's not something to brag about or to be in awe of. That's something to cringe at.

The only reason why it's a toy car and not a real car is because it's illegal to use in a live real car without special approval and licensing that comes with years of testing. The principle is identical if you have wired the car correctly. You can use the exact same code for a real car.

Yep. Hotz is a good hacker, but he really should have considered safety more. I don't care if he puts himself in danger on a closed course, but I do care if he puts unwitting drivers in danger because of his arrogance.

It's just like one of those "genius kid inventions" news flashes. Just detached from reality, completely oblivious to the real problem at hand. There've been computer controlled vehicles before any of you were even born, but try making them to avoid real traffic, real unexpected problems or even solve moral dilemmas(like, if crashing the driver would save many lives). It's hilarious so many people here are buying into this just because of muh Linux, and that after our glorious CPU solderer. Speaks for itself.

anyways,, pretty much anyone could make a selfdriven car for highways only (i'm pretty sure i could, a couple of lidars and/or kinects, some transform matrixes to estimate distances based on speed and camera range, and some trajectory correction based on the previously estimated "golden path")

besides the whole system he build is flawed from the start, does ubuntu even ship with a realtime kernel nowadays? and i bet he has the driving logic being calculated at a steady rate, instead of being mostly event driven (interrupts).

call me once he has made a car that is able to avoid crashes by predicting other vehicles trajectories and possible outcomes of future actions (afaik not even giant brand can do this), till then i more than happy to drive stick

See google's self-driving cars, essentially, everyone can do it. The bottleneck, beside processing power, is the time investment to get that shit tested and approved for real driving, not actually implementing the self-driving or modifying the car to hook up the computer and sensors.

How much do you want to bet that the homebrew self driving car can't drive on dirt roads? How about roads where the lines aren't visible? What about when the lines get covered with snow or are made hard to recognize by wet roads? How about heavy fog? What if the camera's lens gets dirty?
You're an idiot if you think programming a self driving car is simple. If it was really that easy then why did extremely bright teams of people fail the DARPA Challenge?

Nothing because it's not a self-driving car and rather a driving assistant like every modern car has.

All you need is a self driving car to be better than people.
Past that is just optimisation.
They're already better than people, the problem is not having a sticky PR situation. People just don't like the idea that car accidents happen. If every terrorism death was reported the same amount as car accident deaths, the newspapers wouldn't have space for any other news and each newspaper would be a tome.

Google's car actually does this, to some degree at least.
I can't find the video now but when one of their car's got rear ended while waiting at lights they released a video showing the sensor data the car was receiving, when it detected the possible collision, the flashing of the brake lights to try and warn the approaching driver, etc

Obviously while stopped at lights there isn't much the car can do to avoid someone rear ending it but the more interesting part is the tracking of everything moving around it in a reasonable sphere.

Didn't he admit it could only really travel in straight lines?

Call me when someone writes one that follows road laws, reads all street signs, has conditions to prevent accidents and can calculate the correct speeds/turn for corners.

Also, manual.
>>
>>51927078
It has nothing to do with that. Everyone can get 100% performance on any task in ML (not 99.999999999%, literally 100%), all you need is 2 relu layers of sufficient length; it's a universal approximator after all. If 100% performance is what people were after, every single problem in the world would have been considered solved by ANNs long ago.

What matters is generalization performance. While overfitting is beyond trivial, actually performing well in unforeseen conditions isn't, and that's where 99% of all ML work goes. The remaining 1% goes into various peripheral research areas, like compneurosci, optimization, numerical stabilization, etc. to improve the rate at which an optimum is found, robustness to noise, decrease overfitting, and so on and so forth.

Moreover, in the case of coarse control decision tasks like this one, there is no difference between being correct 99% or 100% of the time because it is not wrong to be within the lines of a lane but a bit to the left, or within the lines of a lane but a bit to the right, as opposed to dead center; but deviating from being dead center is still considered an error for semi-obvious reasons. This mismatch is a kind of credit-assignment issue that is also an area of interest in ML, but especially in RL and control.

Finally, without a suitable dataset, which nobody has so far except google, it's not possible to judge how well you're performing unless you can make it rain or snow or hail on demand over live traffic (protip: you can't), or go hire hundreds of drivers to test a whole fleet of cars to observe these conditions and guestimate from there that it does "well enough" or "needs some work". Where do you think all the money other self-driving car projects has been going? You think it's cheap to buy 100 cars, outfit them with that tech, and then hire 100 fulltime drivers to testdrive them all day every day?
>>
>>51927673
That's already available from a bunch of car manufacturers. I think google's method is the most advanced and does a fuckload of observations. The usual method isn't to read signs (though that has been done before, not sure if as part of sdc's, but check arxiv), but to use gps data (which is more reliable anyway, what if a panel is completely hidden by trees or what if it's fallen?).

but can such a system react in time to short term changes like detours due to construction or accidents
>>
>>51928725

Tesla also runs Ubuntu
>>
>>51930446
The system will not try to drive through a blocked street, but if the GPS data is out of date, it might not consider taking a detour. Depends on the kinds of probes used by the car, some use satelites which don't have that issue.
