Why even ask this?
If you want to watch, rip and burn dvds and blu-rays then yes. if not no.

Do you two understand the concept of Fat32
>>

Not until you don't have it.

Just to be safe, I have two. And sure enough, I haven't had a single need for either of them since I installed them. Whew.

You put the files on the drive, not the ISO.
Also what OS installer takes that much space?
>>
>>51908707
Have you ever installed an OS correctly? Yes, FAT32 does not support single files >4GiB, but how does that even matter?

Have you really never used a usb flash drive for installing an OS?

They sell them on thumb drives for fucks sake

Win 7 ult is just over 4, making it incompatible with a Fat32 drive. Mobos wont accept NTFS

No, it's not.

FAT32 supports partitions up to 2TB.

>>51908893

That's not what I'm talking about, it supports single files up to 4gb, not partitions

So what? Are you going to put an entire ISO there? I agree, WIM files are big, but still - they're below 4GB.
>>
>>51908916
You don't put the fucking ENTIRE iso on the flash drive. You put the CONTENTS OF THE ISO on the drive (Via Rufus or dragging it over or whatever) .
There is not one single file in the ISO over 4GB.

If the OS isn't in ISO Form how would the mobo recognize it?

>>
>>51908954
ok, this is definitely bait, but still.
do you know what a zip file is?
you extract files from it to use them.
iso is like a zip file.
it's a bunch of little files compacted into a big iso file.
you extract the contents of the iso file when you put in on a disk.
or a usb flash drive.
holy fuck you're retarded.
>>
>>51908954
How would the mobo recognize and mount your ISO? It may be possible with EFI, but not with BIOS. Anyway, it doesn't work like that. Motherboard bootloader looks up either for an MBR record or an .efi file on a disk.
>>
>>51908954
The motherboard doesn't recognize ISO files. It looks for bootmgr which is in the ISO.
>>
>>51909001
it doesn't fucking matter, boot computer with usb containing ISO, go to bios, go to BOOT, select REMOVABLE DEVICES, EXECUTE THAT MOTHERFUCKER
>>
>>51909038
Maybe you have a exxtreme 733t mobo with iso mounting capabilities, but the rest of the world does not.

I don't think you understand, when you make a bootable thumb drive using the microsoft application for it an ISO is put onto the USB, but a boot block is made for that ISO so ANY MOBO IN THE FUCKING WORLD can see it

Thanks for posting

computers from 2005 have usb boot options.
Do you still use windows xp?
>>

Thanks for your tight tips, Wiz-- but there is no iso on the drive after you run the tool. just the contents.
>>
>>51909191
They can't mount a fucking .iso
>>

uh yeah, there is

it's the ISO and a simple boot block to get it up and running

Now please, this is pretty much my daily limit for retard exposure

No.

The only time optical drives are a necessity is when some NEET is trying to trash talk apple.

This is the contents of the Windows7 usb disk after running the tool.
Where the fuck is the Iso, here?

I'm actually trying to install an OS from a flash drive right now I've gotten like 8 different errors.

For one I don't know the correct format. I finally get it to work on one computer and another won't let me even try it gives me a

"We were unable to copy your files" error. When it does work I get a. "Files copied but can't run bootmgr" or what ever error nothing is working.
>>
>>51907455
You need it if you want to read BD.
If you don't, then no.

>>
So you can't install an OS using a USB stick? I'm pretty sure I did that like 7 years ago
>>
>>51909261
Flash the ISO onto the USB stick using Rufus (for a windows is installer iso) or unetbootin (for Linux installer)
>>
>>51909231
0/10
Was credible at first, but now it's too obvious.
Specially considering you're talking to the technology board where almost everyone will have experience with installing OSes via flash drive.

You are aware that after making the bootable flash drive you can still go in it in the file manager/explorer/finder to see it contains the individual files and not just one .iso file, right? Try something more beliavable next time.

I've got an external DVD player that I can plug in when I need it. It's shit if you want to watch a DVD or something but good enough to install my older games.
>>
The question is up to you, if you need it
Burning stuff for the family, watching DVDs, installing old games

Just get one used, just to have one in case
>>
>>51908707
then just format it as ntfs
how the fuck is that hard?
>>
With the size of UHD content I am seriously considering a UHD layer when they become cheap enough. I never got a bluray player because my connection was fast enough and my space large enough to accommodate the re-encodes. But looking at the size of some re-encoded UHD (if you don't want a blockfest) content it looks like it will get crazy beyond belief.
>>
>>51909463
you are l8 for the b8.
That whole string of comment was all bait from some idiot, probably OP.
>>
>>51907455
Well, do you?

>>
>>51907455
It's 20 fucking bux

I bought one just in the off chance that I might need it. I think I've used it twice since I built my pc.
>>
>>51907455
Optical disk is a very cheap method of backing up files. You don't need to come up with $100+ upfront like you need to if you use hard drives for backup. You can buy discs as you see necessary.
Think of them as a "pay as you go" plan on backing up
>>
>>51907455
If you want to install Windows 7 on a skylake chipset computer then yeah you do.

1XX series chip-sets dropped support for Windows 7's EHCI in favor of XHCI.

Also you'll need a PS/2 keyboard and mouse as USB won't work in the installation process.
>>
I still buy Blu-Ray disks (movies that I really like and anime), so I need an optical drive.
>>
>>51908811
I've installed win 7 ult on 3 separate laptops without issue from a 8gb flash drive
>>
>>51910100
Now try doing that on a Skylake laptop and weep.
>>
>>51908549
the only complicated scenario here is installing windows 7 on a USB3.0 only device
>>

>>
>>51908684
You write the ISO file to the USB stick or if you're using windows you unpack the ISO in the USB.
First the unpacked files dont go higher than fat32.
Second the Windows Installer works in NTFS.

Please refrain from posting.
>>
>>51911607
than the limit of fat32*

>>
>>51907455
i have usb blu-ray/dvd/cd/whatever else combo, just in case. It's a good thing to have, but i wouldn't go as far as putting one inside my case. I just keep my small usb thingie in shelf and use it when needed.
>>
>>51907455
I've been without an optical drive for 3 years and I haven't needed one since then.
