Obligatory 5 post

>post it every day until the Orient comes in
>post that every day until the Squale comes in
>post that every day until you pick a new watch to buy

How do you fuckers feel about G-Shocks? Seems like the natural progression of the tool watch/field watch to me, especially if it incorporates climate sensors or a compass

When are you going to change the strap?

I haven't been here for a while, not much time to shitpost lately.

A few threads ago this link to RGM watches' blog was posted:
http://www.rgmwatches.com/rgmblog/2015/5/5/does-price-determine-quality

A couple key points:

>The problem, designing on the limit, the computer tells them the part is strong enough to do the job, but add a little dirt and dry lubricant and it can’t take the load anymore and breaks. Some very complicated watches made today have the same problems and 10 or 20 years up the road will just be expensive paper weights.

>Personally, I do not see the point in making a mechanical watch using very high tech materials, or processes to make the parts, especially when it makes the watches less durable and shortens their lifespan.

Today I think I found a good example of what he was talking about- the new Tissot Powermatic 80 movement, derived from the 2824-2. It has an 80 hour power reserve. The escapement has no regulator, and it is set at the factory "by a laser". It also beats at a lower rate (21.6K vs 28K) and has a new (thinner) spring barrel, among some other parts changes and is made of a new alloy.

The plus of the longer reserve doesn't seem balanced out by the negatives to me.

Thanks for sharing the article anon. Very interesting.

I'm planning to buy a handwinding flieger from steinhart with a unitas 6497 movement.

How's the movement? From what I've read it's a very old movement and known for its reliability.

2/3 of the electrical engineers I know own a Casio. The other third don't wear watches.

Which to me means that Casios are a no-nonsense, no-bullshit, dependable watch.

That's what I've heard as well. My only concern would be spare parts availability as ETA chokes off supplies outside the Swatch group. It will take some time for other companies to get up to speed making enough spares- it will happen, however.

After typing all that, let me tl;dr- I think it'll be fine.

He had pretty based taste... Keyword is had ;_;

The watch actually hadn't run since he died in the early 1990s. I don't think he ever serviced it once in the 20 years prior. It works remarkably well all things considered, but the power reserve is trash (24 hours at best).

Should you choose automatic over quartz if you have a budget of about €250? If so what would be a good choice? I like a simplistic round design.
>>
>>51895168
EBay. Do a lot of research. Make sure the hands, band, crystal, face, bezel, etc...all match up.

Don't bother looking at the sites that restore them. If anything get one off eBay and send it out to someone that knows what their doing for a service.

As got price, they go from $150-$2500 that I've seen.
>>
>>51901599
It's a matter of preference. Mechanical and automatic watches have charm because of their intricate components and longevity. I would get a mechanical even though they're less accurate than quartz.
>>
>>51901373
My 9015 has been really accurate so far. I haven't reset the time in over a week and right now it's 1 second off. Seems like leaving it crown up makes it lose about 2 seconds overnight, and leaving it dial up gains about 2 seconds. So the two cancel each other out.

Its called a free sprung balance. Welcome to every Rolex and most other high end brands. That screw that you can see on the right side of the balance, its for changing the inertia of the balance, which in turn changes the rate. There's an identical one on the other side of the balance, to ensure that it doesn't go out of poise.

I'm probably going to get a mecaquartz in the near future, but it will have to be one without a seconds subdial, and there aren't many of them unfortunately. I can't stand the ticking seconds.

Some day I'll get a mechanical chrono with a 1/10th subdial. Some day...
>>
>>51906472
I don't understand how the SDGM costs a lot more than the SARB when it looks uglier and proportions are off the whack. The gigantic crown doesn't help either.
>>
>>51907659
That's the guy who thinks that his watch is better than the Omega AT right?
>>

I may get a mechaquartz sometime, but why the 24h indicator, if I look outside I know what time it is. I can't help but feel that that subdial would have been better served as a chronograph hours indicator.
>>
>>51910143
It's only on the tiny ass subdial, small price to pay for the benefits of the movement.

My grandpa passed away recently and he left me this. I've never been a watch guy, but I quite like the look of this one, may use it for fancy occasions. Thoughts?

Inscription below the hands reads "17 JEWELS INCABLOC", whatever that means. More jewels is better, right?

Sorry for the crappy picture.
>>
>>51910523

The answer to that question is that the price has nothing to do with your personal sense of aesthetics.

It is priced higher than the SARB because it has a more intricate dial/case/bracelet finishing, it has a solid milled GS style clasp, it has two half-links, it has Diashield, and it has Seiko's proprietary super AR on the sapphire crystal.

As far as I can tell, Seiko appears to price their watches with some reference to how much they cost to produce as opposed to the Swiss approach of pricing them based strictly on their desirability.
>>
>>51910532

I never said that. I said that you cannot find a Swiss watch with a comparable level of manufacturing quality to the dial/case/bracelet of the Brightz line until you are getting into the range of an Omega AT.

I was not talking about movements or aesthetic taste, but strictly about the manufacturing quality of the dial/case/bracelet.

If you really want, I can go full autist and bore you to death with a point by point analysis of the dial/case/bracelet finishing to support my point.

Also, shark mesh bracelets look way better after you Scotchbrite the shit out of them.
>>
>>51911907
I've seen these turn up at times, i recall that they are Swiss made.

The role of jewels in a watch is to be a material that produces low friction between moving parts and also a predictable friction pattern, and contributes to the accuracy of the movement. Though just because some watches have more it doesn't mean they are better (When considering movements with similar characteristics), and or more expensive. Incabloc is a shock protection system for the watch balance, overall a neat feature.

Looks nice overall, dig the central seconds hand and i think it'll work great with a brown leather strap. Did you attempt to wind it up?

That may have been the joke. Anyways personally I like the blue but I got pretty tired of that watch. It's very nice for the price but it's not that great, I think the crystal scratches super easily (the hardlex is clearly not the same as the hardlex in an SKX) and for some reason the 7S26 in that watch has given me a bunch of trouble while the same movement in my SKX has never given me any shit. Lighter than steel, usually a darker color and less shiny, much more prone to scratching. Oh neat, I just got a Hirsch strap for my SRP. I almost got that exact same one, but they didn't have it in 20mm

Not sure but think so.
VNhandcrafts or whatever does allegedly give papers for a few bux more.
I wouldn't risk it, though I haven't looked very far into it either.

Filling up my watch box has really put a brake on me. I need to decide what I want to get rid of if I really want to get one of these watches I've been eyeing lately.

Unless they don't mark the package as genuine croc/python/panda/mountain gorilla leather I don't think customs could tell whether it's real or PU/imitation calf. Unless they bother fucking around with microscopes/DNA.

One with the golden frame looks amazing

>>51919798
Is that Constellation of solid gold?

>>51919798
Get rid of the box. Then you can buy a bigger one.

Nah it's gold cap. It did have the solid gold mesh bracelet originally but that's long gone.

>>51919974
Well that would sort of defeat the purpose.

If only it wasn't a gift. I think the Casio will be first to go though. I hate it but I have to admit it's useful so I might just keep it at my desk at work instead so I can wear nice watches to the office and then have the Casio to change into for field work where I might bang it up.

Hi all, I am wondering if anyone has any experience with the following watch/brand: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007MPEXHW/ (Titan Edge)

I am interested in it mostly due to the thinness and the look, but am not a watch guy

I meant this post:
>>51919798
I assumed it was the same since there's an alpha chrono on a bond strap in both.

It's not the lug width I mean, it's the chunkiness of the lugs themselves.

Only recently took an interest in watches... Please be gentle. Also, what watch should I get next? How do you keep automatics winded when not wearing them?
>>
>>51922468
not doing bad at all for someone who just started up, good choices.
some automatic movements allow for handwinding from the crown, see if you can do that with your watches.

I'm surprised Seiko Holdings has so few employees, especially compared to Citizen and Swatch.

Gotta work those Malaysian slaves and orphaned schoolgirls extra hard to deliver better value to the customer, I suppose.
>>
>>51922890
Seiko Holdings doesn't include Seiko Instruments or Seiko Epson, and I think parts of the watch business are handled by those other two. I know SII handles selling movements to third parties and for some reason I think I remember them doing some of the basic materials stuff like growing sapphires and making all the oils and stuff but I may have made that up. And then Epson is obviously mostly printers but they also own Orient.
>>
>>51923077
> Seiko Watch Corp., a subsidiary of Seiko Holdings Corp., markets SEIKO watches while Seiko Instruments Inc. and Seiko Epson Corp. manufacture their movements.

>Time Module (TMI), a member of the Seiko Group, was established in 1987 with funding from Seiko Watch Company, Seiko Instruments Inc., and Seiko Epson Corp. to manufacture watch movements.[1][2]

>On January 26, 2009, Seiko Holdings and Seiko Instruments announced that the two companies will be merged on October 1, 2009 through a share swap. Seiko Instruments became a wholly owned subsidiary of Seiko Holdings on October 1, 2009.

So yeah, it's more complicated than just calling Seiko Holdings the watch company. In fact I'm not sure why they counted the number of employees in Holdings instead of counting total employees for the whole Seiko Group since they were comparing conglomerates anyway, but whatever.
>>
>>51923152
I'm surprised Seiko doesn't seem to be involved in the whole big mess of fuckery that is the Keiretsu system that every other Japanese business is a part of.
>>
>>51923077
Yeah, considering Seiko produces something like 10 million quartz movements PER MONTH, I would imagine they probably need more than 13,000 employees to run shit.

Hell, according to LinkedIn, Seiko Instruments has more than 10,000 employees, and that's just on the Daini side of things. You still have Seiko-Epson, which has something along the lines of 70,000 employees, though obviously most of those are working on imaging and other Epson shit (then again, I bet most of the 30,000+ Swatch employees are in the marketing department). Once you take all parts of it into consideration, Seiko is fucking gigantic. Graphic confirmed for Mountain Jew propaganda designed to inflate their egos and belittle larger competitors.
