>Fusion reactors will never be developed and commercialised in your life time

Feels bad man.
>>
>>51883021
Why would I even need a fusion reactor?
>>
>>51883021
Because they don't work.
>>

We have enough fossil fuels to last us for around another century.

Oil companies pls go. Fusion would be far, far cheaper than anything we have now, and allow for all sorts of new technologies like mass-scale water desalination and desert reclamation, dirt-cheap metal smelting, transonic magnetism-propelled transportation, and practical interplanetary space travel.

We've spent more than 50 years doing research on this. How long does it take to say it's long enough? 100 years? 150 years?
>>
The problem with fusion based energy is that you need temperatures of around 800000000°K in order to work, and currently the only way to do that is to start with a fission based reaction, which produces harmful radiation defeating the purpose of a clean reactor

gee ya know I just cant figure out why
>>
>>51883912
If that's what it takes to jump start a fusion reaction, I think it's acceptable.
>>
>>51883969
Try telling that to the public. Even though fusion based reactions are completely safe and impossible to create a meltdown, the fact that you basically have to set off a small plutonium bomb to get them going would not go to well with the normies

any1 wanting fusion reacters is basically trying to get us all killed tbfh so we better stick with clean and reliable energy like nuclear and oil...
>>
>>51883021
Just build a rig with an overclocked FX-9590 and 4 R9 290Xs in crossfire, that'll generate enough heat to kickstart a fusion reactor.

There is ABSOLUTELY NO excuse, NONE, to have something as dangerous and hazardous to human and environmental life as a fusion reactor in 2015.
>>
>>51884193
>the fact that you basically have to set off a small plutonium bomb to get them going would not go to well with the normies

That's the thing we need to research - how to jumpstart the fusion safely.

The excuse is that there is no danger, hazard and waste in a proper fusion reactor.

List of things at least as dangerous as a fusion reactor

the things don't even produce greenhouse gases or nuclear waste

The whole idea is stupid to begin with. They expect to get more energy out of it than they put in. It's never going to work.

There are lots of things we've been researching for quite some time and still don't understand. Do you honestly believe that we should give up simply because we haven't succeeded yet?

Europe and Japan are still working on fusion.
The US just isn't a front runner for modern technology anymore.
>>
>>51884817
>It's never going to work.
The science is sound, there are just a few issues that need to be worked out first.
>>
>>51883912
Fairly sure they use electricity, not nuclear fission, to heat up the reactor?
>>
>ITT ppl who don't understand the issues very clearly.

Fusion reactions are producible now and generate copious amounts of energy (far more than necessary to sustain the ongoing reaction). The issue is one of materials science and structural engineering.

At this point fusion reactors have to be quickly shut down before they tear themselves apart (actually before they begin leaking too much plasma). Once that is solved, probably by some sort of stellerator approach, then simple economics will ensure they're widespread use--regardless of any opposition to them.

It's being worked on. DEMO is supposedly 20 years from spitting out power.

also lots of interesting other efforts..

sure just dig into the literature (or even the public portals) on the operational procedures for to tokamak or stellerator systems used in research now. for example the latest stellerator research bed at Max Planck.
