Doing a month on Mint Linux as my primary to educate myself. Have a history with Windows. Honestly not loving it. Pros: it's snappy, more customisable. Cons: took an hour to get .mkv files to play, took an hour to get steam working, Netflix is only working on Chrome. 15 days to go before I go back to Windows 10.

After having arch, mint, lubuntu, opensuse, fedora and lxle installed for a while, I got sick and tired of mint, le ebin meme tippin' distro and opensuse. It seems only arch and ubuntu derivatives manage to make comfy OSes with some mainstreamness (ie longevity, support, etc).

LXQt is great I just wish it had more support overall. It still feels like a hacked together mess.

Fast as shit, though.
>>
>>51885407
Yeah, it doesn't have much in the way of extra themes or widgets and isn't very customizable but it's been pretty fast and more or less stable for me. Hopefully they'll keep adding more features and polish to it.

Googling how to get .mkv files to work, installing vlc player, still not working, keep reading, looks like i need install codecs or some shit.

Install steam from website. Doesn't work. Google that shit. Figure out how to uninstall, then reinstall from repository. I guess I got the wrong version.

It's just not very intuitive for a new user.

KDE
SuSE (a version from 2001 before the "Open" part was added) was my first and even then it was very invested in KDE. I've been a KDE person ever since. I came to Debian a little over two years ago and intend to stick with it.

I'm in the process of installing Gentoo on every machine I can get my hands on right now. I'm having issues in the kernel compilation but that's about it.

I might go to a *BSD if Wine works in Linux emulation, since I've heard that you can get equal or better performance out of BSD for some reason. Problem is compatibility is already bad enough as it is, so if it doesn't work, it's gentoo on everything.

Funny thing though, is that I'll be installing Gentoo for a friend in exchange for a free pizza, then I'll laugh if/when something breaks and he has no clue what to do with it.

steam is normally the same, except you have your graphic card drivers messed up

i think you just made some mistakes while installing, dont blame linux for that

well you also have to get codecs in windows as far as i remember.

sure, installing is a bit diffrent. but doing it with the terminal is actually not that difficult

>apt-get install steam
or with your package manager, just search steam and it will install the latest version of it

The interface for me is just so cluttered and primitive. I know it's designed to be ultra-lightweight and easily configurable, but for me I think using a window manager does the job better and more effectively than XFCE, and looks nicer with a little bit of configuration.

That's just me though.

In my free time I'd use arch because I love a time sink. If it was for actual extended and dedicated use I'd probably pick fedora if I started over again. Right now I'm on a copy of botnet 7. Will probably switch to fedora when support ends.

Xubuntu with XFCE/i3. Might go back to arch, but idk.
