If I got one, could I download unlimited songs to my computer? Is it basically the cheapest way to legally get songs in the US?

It's a streaming service. You can only download music you've uploaded yourself to it. You can't save for offline on desktop, only mobile.

Yeah, you can only download what you have uploaded, or what you buy. If you are talking about buying the GPM All access or whatever it is called, you can't save music you stream(unless on mobile). You'd have to buy the album first.
