AMD announced today that the company is releasing a slew of open-source software and tools to give game developers, heterogeneous applications, and HPC applications deeper access to the GPU and GPU resources. AMD and their Radeon Technologies Group (RTG) are looking for ways to ease game development, so developers can more easily re-use code and port their games from consoles over to the PC. With GPUOpen, game developers will have direct access to GPU hardware, as well as access to a large collection of open source effects, tools, libraries and SDKs, which are being made available on GitHub under an MIT open-source license. As part of the effort, the company is also releasing a new HCC C++ compiler which will be a tool in enabling developers to more easily leverage the resources of discrete GPU hardware in heterogeneous systems. The HCC complier also allows developers to convert CUDA code to portable C++. According to AMD, internal testing shows that in many cases 90 percent or more of CUDA code can be automatically converted into C++ with the final 10 percent converted manually in the widely popular C++ language. An early access program for the "Boltzmann Initiative" tools is planned for Q1 2016.

Reminder we all should buy AMD since Intel indulges in illegal practices.

>From 2003 until 2006, Intel paid $1 Billion to Dell in exchange not to ship any computers using CPUs made by AMD.
>Intel held OEMs ransom, encouraging them to only ship Intel CPUs by way of volume discounts and threatening OEMs with low-priority during CPU shortages.
>Intel engaged in false advertising, and misrepresenting benchmark results. This came to light after a Federal Trade Commission settlement and an SEC probe disclosed Intel paid Dell up to $1 Billion a year not to use AMD chips.

This. 2016 might start a spark for desktop Linux. All it needs is perfect GPU passthroughs with at least 99% performance and there's literally no reason to not use Linux.

>>
>>51880464
GPU passthrough is actually fairly easy, now. What we really need is capture software that will allow the secondary GPU to display to a window in the output of the primary GPU, or vice versa. That is, we need a way to streamline things so that you can just plug your monitor into one of the GPUs and have the ability to access both outputs easily. If we're lucky, that's one of the things that AMD is working on for Linux. To be honest, I'd be running Linux with a Windows VM right now if the I/O was easier to manage.

Anon you are really retarded you know that?

To begin with OpenGL is not open source, but the specifications for it are open to anyone and is the job of the video card manufactured to create the plugins to make the functions work on their video cards, which AMD completely neglected to the point where is even worse than Intel's, and Intel only has drivers because they "had to do it" even though they don't even want to do software.

All that AMD had to do to not get bankrupt-memed was centering the Catalyst window when it was being launched.

>heat
I'm sorry.

>AMD
+Powerful GPUs in most tasks aside from gaming
+All tiers are checked with being almost always in the top except the very high end with the Fury X
390 is a good check to the 970
380x is the middle range champion
380 beats the 960
Fury competes well with the 980, though recent price drops and overclocking from the green team make me question this stance.
+Last two generations of cards are still not only competing with this generation but outright beating the middle middle range(Tahiti is the GOAT)
+They're going open source which is a huge plus for everyone, closed standards are bad for us.
-Despite its great performance, Hawaii is a nuclear reactor. Fiji is catching up and going into a good direction but still falls behind
-Linux support sucks a bad of dicks compared to Nvidia
-Multi Monitor power consumption is retarded, though Fiji handles this well now with both multi monitor and higher refresh monitors
+- Drivers are not as bad as they are memed to be, but they can fuck up really badly.

>Nvidia
+Maxwell is a fucking miracle, the 750Ti warned us of the efficiency shitstorm
+Fast support in driver updates
+Despite the 3.5GB, the 970 is still an amazing card if you could get it new for $240
+The 980Ti is another miracle, a fantastic finish for 28nm
+good IO on all of their cards
-very closed on their standards, promotes things like Gameworks and turning off PhysX when using a different card
-despite the praise, they're lying fuckers with the 970
-the so called efficiency craps itself with higher refresh monitors, consuming a retarded amount of power just idling a monitor
-Kepler isn't getting that much love anymore. Hawaii is on toe with it if not beating it when the past was very different.

Its not as effecient as people think, though it does use less power than hawaii and kepler.

They do though; the open-source Linux drivers with AMD are second only to the Intel ones. AMD is in the middle of a major restructuring of their closed-source driver too, to use more of the FOSS stack, so hopefully it will get better as well. Right now the AMD blob is _by far_ worse than the one Nvidia provides though, which means that performance is generally terrible (and has been for a long while).
