I've had the same 2x4gb kit of ddr3 1600mhz since I started building. The most RAM i have ever used was 6.5GB and that was with a AAA game running in the background, 10+tabs of addon ridden Firefox, and chat client all going at the same time.
I only have 4gb, 1gb of which is dedicated to video memory, on my school PC and with 25+ tabs open and LibreOffice, I've only ever seen 1.5gb out of the 3gb left for system use.
For people who run VMs, do photo or video work I can see 16+gb of ram. Other than that, it is nothing but e-peen.
