Intended for users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are three ways to try Linux, you can:

1) Install a Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
2) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full Linux experience".
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with Linux (not recommended)

If you are serious about switching to Linux and if you have Windows dual-booted (recommended for pure newbies),
we recommend you use it exclusively for 2 weeks, and avoid Windows dual booting for that period of time, or it's
likely you will start retreating back to windows instead of getting used to GNU/Linux as your new home and working on
making it feel the way you want it.

>Recommended for beginners:
-Ubuntu MATE
-Debian (For Broadcom devices, use an ISO that includes non-free firmware)
-openSUSE
-LinuxMint (a.k.a Ubuntu LTS + Cinnamon)

Before asking, please find the answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe wine can make up for it.

Didn't see the other thread was dead:

Alright I've just spent the last couple hours having loads of trouble with compton and i3 and I could really use some pointers here. For reference I'm using a newly installed Arch running xfce.

As suggested earlier in this thread, I tried to set up compton. I did all the steps for an AUR build, but when I tried to run it I got "Another composite manger is already running". I double checked the xfce menu; Enable display compositing was unchecked. I ran a bash script to check which compositor was running; it returned xfwm4. I tried modifying xinit to no avail. Setting "compton -b" to run on startup caused my nvidia drivers to go all screwy leaving me with a black screen on startup. I reinstalled the drivers and xfce, haven't touched it since.

i3 wasn't much fun either. Seemed to download fine through pacman, but after picking the modifier key the console returned that it couldn't find the i3 directory. I tried to run i3 in console it returned "ERROR: Another window manager seems to be running (X error 10).

I haven't been able to find an effective online solution and its driving me nuts. Anyone know what might be causing this and how to rectify the situation?

Jesus this question is like a riddle.
Maybe you were super good at configuring your bootloader.
Maybe systemd is made of magic and does amazing things.
Maybe you're typing /etc/fstab wrong whenever you try to read it from the terminal.

>>
>>51872642

>>
>>51872642
I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Windows, is in fact, NSA/Windows, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, NSA plus Windows. Windows is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another expensive component of a fully functioning spy system made useful by the NSA core-spyware, reverse shell utilities and vital keylogging components comprising a full botnet as defined by Gen. J. Clapper.

Many computer users run a modified version of the botnet system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of spyware which is widely used today is often called “Windows”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the NSA system, developed by the NSA. There really is a Windows, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.

Windows is the cover: the program in the system that hides the spying resources from the other programs that you run. The cover is an essential part of a botnet, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete botnet. Windows is normally used in combination with the NSA spyware: the whole system is basically botnet with Windows added, or NSA/Windows. All the so-called “Windows” versions are really versions of NSA/Windows.

Yeah, most of this separation is unnecessary with today's hardware. Although I think swap is an exception: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paging

whats up Linux people. Long story short, build a baby itx build specifically for school, anime after work, and overall shitposting. Specs are in pic. What are some "stripping down" things I can do to make Mint a little less laggy? I know the CPU is slower (only 1.3ghz) and it only supports single channel RAM, but overall once something is started up, it keeps up fine. It is just it still takes 6 or so seconds for a program such as Firefox to boot up for the first time. This is off an ssd.

Thanks!
>>
>>51873415
Use a lighter distro, such as Xubuntu/Lubuntu, or use a pure WM to free up resource.
>>
>>51873389
Not really? If you have an old school rotating disk you probably want an entirely separate storage partition (unless your SSD is unusably small). I don't really see any of the drawbacks to partitioning a separate swap space becoming a concern to any PC user.
>>
>>51873415
get rid of mint. remove every system service. uninstall whatever shitty software it comes packed with
>>
>>51873426
that's what everyone says but once I install Firefox with addons like adblock, wouldn't it be just as resource heavy as Mint? Or does Mint simply have more background resources?

Is Lubuntu simply Ubuntu with a stripped down DE or is there more to it?

It's literally a hog. Use uBlock Origin instead.

How to make LXDM work with OpenRC?

But I also need to use Adobe stuff. Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop. I remember having some trouble a while ago with the CS5 suite on Debian, could I get them to work fine over Wine or maybe virtualization? Is anyone doing this?
