Is there any more reliable way to download streaming movies than with youtube-dl?

But keepvid most definitely does not support the number of websites that youtube-dl does, so no it is not more reliable.

Youtube-dl does not work everywhere. Some sites are not supported because the developers consider them illegal streams.
You can use the "inspect element" method demonstrated in this webm to download from almost every website imaginable, especially if you are able to change your user-agent to a mobile device that can only accept html5 video
