As someone who has hdbits, I barely use it outside of information.
If you want raw blurays, or a seemingly infinite pool of knowledge with regards to encoding, it's fanfuckingtastic. If you just want to download content, AHD+PTP is much better. They are better laid out sites with clearer, better presented information. The bonus and ratio systems are more forgiving. They get content about as fast. The quality of the rips isn't measurably different anymore either.
There have been 2 movies I got off of HDB that I didn't find elsewhere with the same level of quality. They were black and white films made in the 40s that a family member wanted. If you aren't looking for SUPER obscure stuff it doesn't matter. If you get into HDB, you probably won't use the site very much.

HDB polices for bonus points aren't even remotely close to as forgiving as PTP/AHD though. Yeah you can snag tons of freeleech stuff. You don't even have to on AHD, and PTP gives you more than enough with even an ounce of patience.
On AHD, as long as you seed everything, you can download 1TB of internals before hitting ratio watch. By the time you even download that much you have enough bonus points to buy 20-30GB of upload per week, even on the well seeded torrents. Even if you download remuxes at 50% freeleech instead of regular rips at 75% freeleech, that's still ~500GB of ratio free content. All of this is assuming that you never upload a single bit of data, which literally never happens unless you have worse than third world internet and can't forward ports to be connectable (in which case you shouldn't even be on an HD tracker, but whatever). Internals are ratio machines.
PTP is similar. Golden popcorn releases (which are VERY frequently just internal encodes from AHD) give you double bonus points. On either tracker you just print bonus points for seeding and downloading high quality rips, and even on a shit connection you are guaranteed considerable amounts of upload.

It's a real shame because HDB has a genuinely wonderful community, and I've learned staggering amounts of information about encoding there.

Yep, that's me. I'm at about 9.5 TB across BTN/PTP/AHD/HDB. Factoring in cross seeding and it's around 15TB.
Honestly, I've never really seen a problem with retention on any of those 4 trackers. HDB probably has the best in terms of retention relative to snatch count, but the other sites make up for it by just having much bigger communities. There's a lot of content on all of them that only has a few (often somewhat slow) seeds, but retention hasn't really been a major issue in my experience.

AHD couldn't be the "definitive" HD tracker even if you have PTP, though. If you're into old/obscure stuff, you'll need to have at least a couple more trackers like HDT or Tik to fill the gaps. HDB is much closer to being the one definitive HD tracker. Their BP system may be not as forgiving as it is at some other trackers, but it's forgiving enough to make ratio maintaining pretty easy. Usually a user wouldn't start downloading terabytes of movies right after he arrived, you know. And in long term he'll be good on HDB even without fast internets, just like on other trackers with working BP system. I got into HDB not long ago and despite having much older accounts on 10+ movie trackers, half of them being HD-oriented, HDB is becoming my main HD tracker. First I go to PTP (because I have a massive buffer there, hehe), then, if I don't find something there, I go to HDB. After all it's content that matter the most. And retention, too. Yeah, the site looks like shit, but it's usable, which is fine by me.

Well again, if you are mostly into new stuff, AHD is a great general hd tracker. Basically any triple a release out of holywood in the past 8-10 years is on there. For most people that's way more than adequate.

A miniseries is a "movie" by those stats, and there's no way to distinguish between HD/SD content. I can also promise you that there are metric shit tons of things that only have a single low quality SD rip there. Lots of more recent movies have a dozen or more rips.
Basically the rough stats are kind of meaningless for any actual comparison.

I mean, if you can get onto PTP it's really a question of why not both. There's so much cross seed potential that it can't hurt you, and there are definitely some benefits to be had. If you can't get into PTP, AHD is a good tracker for general (recent) HD movies. It's not a generaal purpose one size fits all replacement, but it's definitely a good tracker to be on.

The problem with these stats in my opinion is that 30% of them are unseeded. It's hard to find something unseeded on HDB ever without specifically looking for it. People do genuinely reseed shit if you hit the button in my experience though.
