D is semi-acceptable and is better if you're left-handed, but for right handed people it will be a bit uncomfortable to hold the phone with one hand with headphones plugged there

I've found from experience that the middle of a and b is the best.
When I knock my phone off of my desk or it falls out of my pocket, it lands almost perfectly perpendicular to the ground, increasing the surface area and reducing the likelyhood of damage. If it was not in the middle, my phone would land on a corner, and if it was on the bottom it would do a flip (potentially landing on the screen).

It's way, way less. I used a Samsung Bluetooth module with my Nexus 4 for at least a year. A couple hours of podcasts and my phone battery was toast. By comparison, I can listen to hours and hours of podcasts and music with headphones before it even gets to 50% battery.
