I would say that Postgre is probably the best relational database for a project of less than world-shaking scale. The only other relational engines I would consider using are:

If your project is entirely contained in the Microsoft world

Schemaless design is not always the best approach. There are some activities which are better suited to RDBS. There's no blanket answer as to which one is better.
