Does anyone have one of these intel NUCs or ChromeBoxes? I was thinking of getting one for htpc usage, and installing Linux on there. Anyone have any experiences with these devices, and if so, would you recommend them?
>>
I've been thinking about either buying a cheap NUC or the Odroid XU4 and hook it up to my second screen. Then use Synergy Project to control both with one mouse and keyboard.
This way I can use the NUC/SBC as webserver or something for minor projects.
>>
>>51863790
I have a NUC i5 the haswell one.
16 gigs of ram and 500 gb ssd, it can run all OS's (including OSX) its easy to use, it can run most video games up to 2014 without turning into a fireball.
It doesn't throttle the cpu.
It's a pure intel machine, what can I say it works well with everything.
>>
>>51863915
>including OSX)

OS X works on these devices??
>>
>>51863790
I own one and I recommend it if you have realistic expectations. I can run most older games fine and some recent ones if I turn the settings down. If you're using it as an htpc it should be good.

I use it primarily as a mobile desktop. It's mounted to the back of my monitor and if I need to take it somewhere I just toss it in a laptop case with a keyboard and mouse and go. Pretty handy.
>>
>>51863790
NUCs are good
Chromeboxes are shit
>>
My 99$ rig that I named "designated shitposting build" consumes around 30W with the SSD and everything, and handles quite a few tabs of chrome and 1080p pretty well with just 2g ram, would recommend (celeron j1800 / j1900)
>>
>>51864032
What's the specs?
>>
>>51863790
I have an the i5 one from this year and run Ubuntu on it. It's good.
>>
>>51864081
celeron dual core (j1800, equivalent of a core 2 duo E7300, better graphics performance, integrated graphics)
2G ultra low power notebook ram
sandisk readycache 32gb SSD (though since the integrated cpu + heatsink board msi j1800i has only sata 2 the read perf is 280M/s, still decent)
it fit in a tiny atx case, very light and easy to carry

Got this one last year:
Intel NUC DN2820FYKH
It cant decode the mpeg flux from a DVB-T without stuttering.
Not a driver issue, I tried with Openelec and Win7, same problem.
I resell it and got an EB1033 instead.
>>
>>51863924
Yes rather well
>>
>>51863924
I think means hackintosh. OS x on anything that isn't apple hardware is retarded. They are powerful enough but its pointless.
>>
>>51863790
I have 6x D3401 NUCs that I use for a Hadoop cluster.

They work pretty good. Power bricks shit though. of the 6 I think i have maybe one original left after 6 months
>>
>>51864385
They don't have internal power supplies?
>>
>>51864328
NUC has literally almost the exact same hardware as the Mac Mini
>>
>>51864463
No, they all have power bricks. That's one of the reasons they're so small
>>
What about the chromebooks?

Hackintosh is still Os X senpai
>>
>>51863878
Mayyybe I'll get an Intel Compute Stick. Those look pretty good too, for their price.
>>
>>51863790
I feel they're too expensive for what they are, even if you can find one for cheap it's got no cpu/ram etc..
>>
>>51864792
Yeah, and I'm sure when I take my hackintosh into the apple store and tell that to the employees, they'll say "Sure, go ahead!"
>>
Chromeboxes are a good Facebook machine for your grandma. They're quite fast and incredibly difficult to fuck up. The average /g/ user would feel pretty restricted with one however. If you're looking to get one just install Linux, you may as well pick something with better hardware support.
>>
>>51863790
I have one because it does 4k and spending the extra $100 is worth it to be able to run a real desktop OS over Roku/Android crippled shit. It also doubles as a file server and znc bouncer.
>>
>>51864864
>Yeah, and I'm sure when I take my hackintosh into the apple store
Why on earth would you do that?
>>
>>51865058
Biggest reason to buy a Mac is Apple's fantastic warranty and customer support. If you don't have that, might as well just use Winblows.

I have the n3150 ASRock one. It's fine as a media machine, because GPU acceleration handles everything, but when it comes to CPU bound stuff like heavy Chrome browsing sessions it gets laggy. If you're thinking of getting one, I'd recommend getting one with a 'proper' CPU (at least an i3).

same. sometimes i do research that leads to a lot of google scholar tabs leading to lots of bibtex plain text tabs open, but otherwise it's mostly porn.

I bought a NUC5CPYH and the integrated graphics for the Celeron N3050 doesn't work in guhnoo + loonicks. I can't boot to an accelerated DE in any distro.
>>
>>51864318
This has got a celeron processor. I wouldn't expect much.

I have this model also and it serves me find as a home webserver and file storage.

It won't boot without an active HDMI source though which is annoying.
>>
>>51863790
If you get one with skylake i doubt you'll have to worry about using them as a htpc.

My NUC is an idiotic use case but i often have turned on for months and no signs of it dying anytime soon.

Chromeboxes are actually the better value for a entry level "NUC" because for around the same price point as the entry level Intel NUC it comes with a faster haswell CPU and 2gb of ram.

I'm waiting for the 2nd generation (Cedar City) to show up.

It's expected to have a Core M, 4K support, 4GB RAM, 64GB SATA storage, USB 3, and to be HDMI-powered.

Pic related is Intel's plan for the next generation.

Right now you can get a Linux stick for 100 bucks. I wonder how much the Core M Cedar City will cost. You could plug it in any TV or monitor and have a portable PC everywhere, you don't even need a power source. So awesome.

I'll get one for my folks, since this is more than capable for what they need from a PC.
>>
>>51866476
It doesn't even have to be heavy actually, the CPU runs out of steam just trying to smooth scroll a page loading with lots of CSS/JS like the Facebook homepage.
>>
>>51867130
Any tv or monitor with HDMI and usb. Which is none of my TVs or monitors.
>>
>>51867293
Jeez. My folks have a 10-year old Philips LCD tv which has two HDMI ports. This should work even on their old, first-gen LCD TV (unless it needs a special version of HDMI to get power from).
>>

Id recommend you get a firetv and install kodi or use the plex app.

I almost exclusively masturbate to my imagination. I used to think about my past lovers, but it's been the better part of a decade since then so then memories have lost their edge. I still do on occasion, only I think about things we could have done instead of the few things I vividly remember.
>>
>>51864153
Sounds like the zotac box I bought. Lots of companies make NUC like boxes OP, including gigabyte, asus and zotac. Intels is best though.

I use mine for kodi and emulation. It's overpowered for what it needs to do, and sips power. A raspberry pi2 with a case and USB hard drive would have cost me almost as much as the zotac box+RAM+drive. And this blows the pi2 out of the water performance wise.
>>
>>51868787
Or I can just get an easy to use all in one package and install Kodi on it and also have access to Netflix, all of the Amazon shit, that endless Pacman game, screen casting, and other shit. Not all of us have the time to spend time fucking around with every single bit of tech. That's for the young and the unemployed. The rest of us are too busy fucking with the tech at our jobs to want to make everything at home into a project.

>intel NUCs or ChromeBoxes? I was thinking of getting one
As was I.
But when I priced up a working configuration (with CPU, RAM, WiFi etc) a second-hand i5 Mac Mini was $100 cheaper. A used HP 7900 was a third the price of the Mini.
>>
I use $35 Odroid C1 for Kodi, Emulation, Torrentbox and Samba File server in my room.

I don't know why you guys need more powerful stuff...
>>
It seems that there's plenty of companies making those things: Intel/Zotac/Asus/Gigabyte. But which one is the best?
>>
What games do people play on these? Any benchmarks?

Wtf an i reading
>>
>>51863790

Just bought the Asus one for my mother for Xmas for $150. This thing is a fucking godsend. She's shit with computers so it's perfect for her. Bonus that logitech devices like webcam and keyboard/trackpad works and even comes with USB 3.0. I think it even dual screens.

Cannot recommend it enough if you have a family member who needs a computer who isn't good with them.
>>
>>51863790

The Kodi guys are saying the 3150 with dual mem slots is pretty amazing. Plays 265, 4K etc with both mem slots filled. Asrock Beebox N3150 or you can get the mITX mobo if you want to build it yourself.

I got a nVidia Shield at home for testing before I go that route myself.
>>
>>51864463

Have you seen one in person? They're goddamn small mang. Where do you think they'd fit the PSU? How would they handle that added heat? Use that grey goo between your ears.
>>
>>51865099

Have you had experience with other NUCs? I'm interested in hearing about the Beebox. Have you been using Windows on it? Kodi?
>>
>>51866476

I maxed out (i5 750 with 8GB RAM) at around 1700. :3

99% non-porn though. Firefox took it on the chin like a champ.
>>
Can i use one as headless seedbox? I read above they wont boot with out an hdmi source. If it is true, will it be fine if i remove it after it boots?
Also what else do i need to buy with it? And at last does it comes with all the cables?

I am waiting Cherry Trail version of PiPo X8/9.

I was going to get one for my mum for her birthday, install it in a fan-less case and VESA mount it to one of those nice looking AOC monitors.

I just don't know whether she needs an i3 (all she does is browse the web, shit post on facebook and word processing). But I'm a but hesitant about getting the 'Pentium' ones like:

http://www.scan.co.uk/products/intel-pinnacle-canyon-nuc-kit-(barebones)-quad-core-pentium-n3700-4k-video-output-ddr3l-up-to-8gb-4x

Are they any good? She has a chromebook at the minute that fulfills 90% of her needs, she just needs access to the full MS office for a distance learning course she is doing.
>>
I have a asus chromebox flashed with OpenElec.

I use it as Kodi mediacenter on my TV, with an external USB tuner.
Works good for more than a year.
