OK /g/, what 1TB single-platter HDD should I buy? Will be used mainly for storage, won't run 24h/day. Will picrel do?

HGST End of Story.

Thinking this is anywhere close to true. Seagate drives will fail early, and fail often. WD is better, but still shit. In ten years running a set of servers for my business, I can't recall a single HGST drive biting it.

I have a HGST it was dying on me. WD has never failed me. I have the HGST somewhere it's a 1TB drive, I'll probably re-use it soon. It was making grinding noise, but was still working, CryptoDisk or whatever it's called said it was on Caution

It's true.

You see something like "Seagate fails twice as much as HGST" or whatever, but in reality this is 4% failure a year against 8% failure per year.
You're rolling the dice with either.
Makes sense to roll the better die, but not choosing seagate won't make your harddrive not die.

I've had a 2TB Seagate Barracuda for close to 2 years and its still running strong, 200 days of power on time too

You know nothing about harddrives

I have about 50 Spinning disks in my colo. Most of them are Seagates because that's the OEM choice for Dell. None of those drives is older than 3 years. The first year I had 6 of the Seagates go bad, 4 the next, and 5 so far this year. 17/50 is not good odds. I have replaced all of the failed Seagates with HGST and haven't had any of those fail. It's anecdotal to be sure, but it's a better sample than, "My mom gave me a seagate drive when I was born and it's still running, and I just bought a Hitachi last year and it's already dead."
