TL;DR:
> people having more than 50 open tabs.
Why? You honestly use them (eventually?)

--

Hey /g/, I want to read opinions about having tons of multiple tabs open in the browser. I was reading this post about chrome consuming RAM and when I check mine was pretty low. Mainly because on normal surfing I just have like 5 tabs max (but when I work I have like 30, but I close them after I finish).

Was talking with a friend about this, everytime he opens chrome it has like 300+ tabs. When I asking him why he answered me "because eventually I'm going to read that article" (that article was open 6 months ago, no, he's not going to read it).
>>
Stupid people open lots of tabs.
I have 13 tabs open and that's a lot of tabs.
Each one is refreshed often though- Weather, chan boards, wikis I access often, stuff like that.
For 'stuff you want to read' there's a thing called bookmarks.

Bookmarks were literally invented for the "I want to visit this later" concept.
>>
I have 3 tabs open right now.

The ultra-tab meme is for stupid ineffectual people
>>
Only happens when I fall into the Wikipedia rabbit hole
>>
>>51857822
i have around 10 tabs i constantly keep open. those are the ones i monitor/refresh often, like forums i care about, my seedbox web ui etc.
normal browsing adds another 5-10 tabs for things like /g/ threads i'm currently monitoring, reading, watching etc.

i only go 50+ when i'm researching something and repeatedly need to access that information

things i might look at some day are stored in bookmarks

>>51857872
I often need to go on places without Internet, so I open everything I need beforehand. And >>51857899 this too, so I always have more than 15 tabs, often more than 30 and sometimes more than 100.
>>
>>51857822
Right now I'm at work, so my tab usage is pretty low.

I have 7 windows open, one with work-related tabs, one with all mailboxes and feeds, then others ordered by theme, with mostly threads from various forums and boards I need to track long term, and a bunch of articles to read, and one final window that contains all short-term stuff, like this thread. And that's just at work.

It's not like I never tried bookmarks or other extensions, it's just that tabs work best.
>>
There usually tabs I'm still using or use frequently, but not worth bookmarking as their use is still temporary. Having a lot of tabs open in Chrome is awful as it loads every tab when you open the browser. Firefox doesn't load the tab until you click on it. Tree style tabs also makes it ease to see them all, having them horizontally across the top also sounds awful.
>>
whenever I'm working on something or troubleshooting something I'm unfamiliar with I usually have many tabs open, I'd say ~20. But most of the time I have 2-3.
>>
>>51857822
I have like 100 tabs open.
You mad?

:^)
>>
I have about 900 on my main browser, need to restart it daily because it leaks memory and even though they are unloaded tabs they still take memory
>>
Use tree style tabs
>>
>>51857822
Most people that have more than 10 tabs open are ADHD autists who don't posses the capability to focus on more than one thing at once.
>>
>>51857822
I have 3 open

one on another thread

one here

one on facebook
>>
>>51859681
but why?
>>
The real problem IMO is that tabs have a better UI than 90% of browser features
it's easier to look through your tabs then go through your history
it takes like 3 clicks to bookmark something and only one to get a new tab so it's much easier to just preemptively make new tabs then remember you want to look at something later and mark it as such
>>
>>51859773
bookmarking is one click: drag URL to bookmark toolbar
>>
>>51859782
But it is not easy to find the shit you need to see in your 100+ bookmarks
>>
>>51859964
put 'em in folders and subfolders and so on?
>>
>180 tabs
i mean half of them are papers i need to go back and read at some point
>>
>>51860589
You can do that by clicking and dragging?
>>
>>51857822
People are stupid, this is why bookmarks exist. I have a shit ton of bookmarks but max 5 tabs.
>>
>>51859964
And it's easy with 100+ tabs?
>>
you can close individual tab?!!!?
>>
>>51860828
if the folder structure already exists, sure. it's not like you need a new folder for every bookmark.
>>
>>51861080
>wasting screenspace by having your folder tree open all the time
>>
>>51861112
what? you drag it onto a folder -> that folder opens -> you drag it on a subfolder -> subfolder opens etc.
>>
>>51861193
So you waste time instead of screenspace. That's a wonderful solution.
>>
When I'm doing research online I often need 50+ tabs open, any particular browsers good at doing this efficiently?
>>
>>51861341
You 'd need a browser that supports vertical tabs. Firefox's TreeStyleTabs extension is particularly good for that.

Another extension to load/unload abs from memory can be pretty useful to keep your computer running smoothly (I use AutoUnloadTabs on firefox, but depending on your needs there are more)
>>
>>51861341
Firefox with treestyletabs, and if you need to view multiple tabs at the same time, side by side, Tile tabs.
>>
Because when I'm browsing pixiv for fresh porn of girls with dicks I mass open tabs and save the images once I've gotten enough worth saving.
>>
>>51860589
Most people aren't autistic enough for that
>>
I open a ton of 4chin images, then go through them all at once, saving them to their respective folders
>>
I open 100+ tabs when I look at porn and it's really annoying that chrome just makes them smaller
If you open enough, they stop appearing and you have to use ctrl+pgup to get to them

>all these barbaric tabs
If its not a forum, image board, or any currently and constantly changing page then there's no reason to hold tabs like this. If you need them for later you can save the pages in full as HTML with images, or use cutepdf and save each page as a PDF for later use if you're offline.

The explanation of "I go offline" is irrelevant if the ability to save a page is available. If its a constantly updated page, fine because it won't be the same as before.

Clean your tabs, save shit to your storage device to use less active memory. Stop killing your device, except OP because it's a Mac and you've already keked yourself so may as well just kill it more

Having lots of lots of tabs isn't that bad with TreeStyleTabs.

I'm at a low number now, but when I'm doing something I'll keep adding on tabs, and when I'm done I clean up.

TST helps organizing.

why not just
>pic related

Save the damn link then remove the title/name.
I always think of this when I see people with a GMAIL ass logo with the words "Gmail" written next to it. Niqqa aint u tired of those words being there when the f*cking LOGO is RIGHT NEXT TO THEM AND INSTANTLY recognisable if you put them in colour order like I do.

Yes

I would probably bookmark thousands of things every week, only really really important things get bookmarked
>>
They're like bookmarks but better. With Firefox's tab groups I can have them nicely organized.
>>
I have about 450 tabs open last I checked.
I have to close firefox and re-open it every couple days because all the tabs makes my CPU idle at like 50% and consumes 90+% of my RAM.

you assume it's the same link every time

besides, keeping the tabs around is functionally equivalent to bookmarks. i dont see why people get so buttblasted over people having tabs
