Does anyone own a CM Storm Quickfire Ultimate? I wanted to buy a Ducky Zero, but this one is just 10 euros more and has much more features.

Is it worth? I want something that lasts for a good time and with easily replaceable keycaps.

I would say the most common bottom row is

1.25 - 1.25 - 1.25 - 6.25 - 1.25 - 1.25 - 1.25 - 1.25

That looks like
1.50 - 1.00 - 1.25 - 6.50 - 1.25 - 1.00 - 1.00 - 1.50
>>
>>51861354
Fair enough, I guess I just never noticed. It's kinda nice to have the smaller super key, gets hit by accident less often.
>>
>>51861313
The QuickFire Ultimate has a non-standard row and the Ducky Zero looks to have regular bottom row.

Definitely avoid the QF Ultimate. Not necessarily recommending the Ducky Zero, though.
>>
>>51861398

Shit, any info about the build quality? I mentioned the keycaps, but to be hones I never had problems with it even when I used a 10 year old membrane keyboard.

The Ultimate looks really good for the price. I found it for 94 euros, while the Zero is 89 and with that I get removable cables and backlight.
>>
>>51861382

>>
>>51861433
No, I looked up an image to check the bottom rows of each board. I don't own either unfortunately. I do have a CM Storm QuickFire Rapid and I can tell you the build quality is so-so. The casing took a real beating. I'm.. not sure how. It's a fucking keyboard. I guess I put it in a bag to transport a few times but it's still surprising how scuffed up that rubberized coating got. Not sure if the Ultimate uses the same one. Can't quite tell. As far as keycaps and switches, the default caps were total ass but I replaced them (the quickfire rapid has a standard layout) so that was fine, and the switches are cherry mx still so that should be fine as well.

Are you sticking strictly to full size boards?
>>
>>51861456
Yeah, that makes sense. Probably gonna have to pay out the ass to get custom keycaps if I ever get around to it.
>>
>>51861433
removable cables are standard on mechanical keyboards unless you're getting a Model M or something. Heck, even the Apple Extended Keyboard II (and the non-extended one) had removable cables, not that they were a common cable. (fucking s-video)
>>
>>51861298
"ducky mini case mod"
>>
>>51861488

Yeah, I use the numpad a lot, so full size boards is a must.

>>51861506

The Ducky Zero doesn't have removable cables.
>>
>>51861492
No, you really can't get any. Max is literally the only aftermarket retailer for a 6.5u space bar, and their caps won't be much of an improvement (if any).
>>
>>51861492
Paying out the ass is something you could get over if it ended up looking good. I'm just not actually sure if you'll find any.

Was gonna say just get something else but I re-read and saw that you already have it.

Honestly, mechanical beats the fuck out of rubber dome. My friends and I all have several mechanicals now, and it's very satisfying when you go to grab a spare board for something and it's mechanical. Worst case, get a better keyboard in the future and just keep that one around. Better than a rubber dome for sure, even if the caps are shit.
>>
>>51861507
literally nothing there
>>
>>51861544
I'm not spoonfeeding you any harder, dude. Maybe someone else will.
>>
>>51861523
>Yeah, I use the numpad a lot, so full size boards is a must.
I'm not here to argue with you, but most people who say this just haven't tried a tenkeyless and exaggerate how much they need a numpad.

I also used the numpad a lot when I had a fullsize board (back in membrane days). When I first got my TKL I adjusted pretty quickly. The worst that happened was I sometimes hit right arrow key when going for what used to be the numpad enter. The only other downside was that I wasn't used to numrow, so even though I typed 140+wpm, I was quite sluggish and inaccurate on the numrow. The problem here isn't that the numrow sucks, it's basically another row of letters, it's that I never learned to use it due to being handicapped by having a numpad. I love having the extra space. I've even moved on to a 60% board now. Having everything closer together is really great.
>>
>>51861523
>The Ducky Zero doesn't have removable cables.
Hahaha, fuck that noise. Well, as I said before, despite saying the CM board is a bad idea, I cannot recommend the Ducky Zero. I actually never really fell in love with Ducky the way a lot of people do. I rank them only a little higher than Razer. I'm sure their build quality is a million times better, but they still feel like a normie board that comes with things I don't care about and without things I do care about.
>>
>>51861525
>>51861534
True, true. I guess it's good that I like the aesthetics of it out the box, and stuff on max looks pretty terrible, at least to me. Whatever, I'll just get a new one when I feel like it haha.

Everything has gaymen aesthetic if you turn the backlight on. If you're talking about the backlight being off, I have no idea what kind of gaymer aesthetic you are seeing in a ducky.

Looks just like a filco, spare the logo, without the backlights.

I don't think I am misinformed on mechanical keyboards, but perhaps I'm being unfair about Ducky specifically.

Name your favorite Ducky boards (or post pics) and I'll look at them and decide what I think.

I used a CM Storm QuickFire Rapid for a while, currently using a Pok3r with Greens. I also own a Model M, AEK II, and my brother owns a V60, Novatouch, a couple Code keyboards, etc.

The domes, springs, and PCB on the NT are all manufactured by Topre. The HHKB is a different beast because it does not have a metal mounting plate, which leads to a rather different feel.

if you live close to raalte you can go pick one up there at Azerty. They have like 5 in stock but won't ship them over online orders for some reason

try checking out your local electronics store to see if they have a blue switch. Unless ofcourse you really can't have sound (in which case any mechanical is probably a bad idea without o rings)

I don't know how compatible they'd be
if I change my "layout" to US, the > < \ key turns into the \| key above the small enter key
so I don't know what the fuck would happen if I tried to place a large enter key on a US board, if it would even fit

azerty users are already familiar with OS level layout changing because like a fifth of the games don't allow rebinding, so they force you to change into US layout so you can actually play normally

Are mechanical keyboards worth it if you're a piss-poorfag?

I managed to get $100 to spend on whatever I'd like, but I'm not sure what I should prioritize my spending on.

I have a decent enough:
>HDTV
>monitor
>gaymen mouse
>an okay computer
>speakers
>phone

What I don't have
>headphones
>decent keyboard
>laptop

I stopped playing osu! intensively because my keyboard is dying and too mushy, but other than Dota I don't play a lot of games. I strive to become a sysadmin so lots of typing, but I don't really notice the feel of my keyboard when I'm typing.
>>
>>51865694
You can get a good entry level mech at that price point. Less so a laptop or a pair of headphones.

Get a ducky zero.
>>
>>51865694
A mechanical KB is the last thing you should be spending on. I don't think they even feel better, Cherry KBs have pathetic feedback and the smoother bottom out on membrane feels more comfortable. Use that money on the laptop.
>>
>>51865575
how good is the quality on that keycap set?
13$ for a 104 key set seems way too cheap to be decent for a doubleshot set
>>
>>51865694
mouse (if you game a lot)
monitor (first if you don't game that much)
headphones
hardware
keyboard

in that order. If you have good speakers and don't really need headphones, go for the keyboard
I'd take a good pair of headphones over a keyboard anyday if I didn't already have a decent pair of headphones

You can literally hear the difference the moment you put them on if you're only used to cheap shit or GAMER HEADSETS

Keycap compatibility. Custom keycap sets account for the largest share of mechanical keyboard cost by far, especially if you have it for more than about two months and buy multiple keysets. The tooling to make Topre caps is so much more expensive for something that already isn't cheap, and so few people own Topre boards that nobody else will buy the same set as you.
>>
>>51867095
Solved pretty easily with the Novatouch or some modding.
Even Topre themselves are likely to put the MX compatible hybrid stems on their own boards soon.

so what's the consensus on the Novatouch TKL? Seems like an easy way to get into Topre without compromises. That downright sexy switch look and the quicker actuation point are appealing. At $200 you're definitely in enthusiast range, whereas the 100-130 is justifiable for normies.

Currently have a poker 3 and I like it, but I think something quieter than blues (yes, I use orings) with arrow keys would be nice. The main downsides I can see are the CM logo on the back, microusb instead of mini, and plenty of coolermaster memes.

The switches are gorgeous, even though it of course won't affect usability.

The logo isn't a real problem, though many of my keyboards have had them on the bottom of the keyboard. It's kind of like a front facing carrier logo on a smartphone, it just doesn't look good. However, this is an okay compromise.

Insertion rate isn't everything. There's a reason miniUSB is still used, and that's because it doesn't break/bend as easily, it's pretty much the standard for removable keyboard cables, and it does the job just fine.

>plenty of coolermaster memes
Coolermaster's boards are viewed as entry level.
>>
>>51869400
There's a very good reason why they picked micro-USB. It's designed to make the cable end more likely to break than the port. Then you can just get a new cable. The port on the board is very firmly attached but allows small wiggles to not wear out the port as quickly.
>>
>>51869649
>The switches are gorgeous, even though it of course won't affect usability.
Oh - the look of the switches, you meant. Yeah, they're cool.

>that's because it doesn't break/bend as easily
The female end? If you open up a NT, you can see that's not happening here. They bolted that shit down tight.

You should try testing clears and blues too. Reds and blacks are both linear, so they're very different and weird to type on, especially at first. Clears are stiffer browns with a larger actuation point, much better feel than browns imo. Blues are similar to browns, except they're slightly stiffer with a click. For some reason they feel far better to type on than browns, even though on paper they're fairly similar besides noise.

If you want a nice quiet, all around switch, I'd definitely suggest clears over browns, and for the nicest switch overall I'd suggest blues. I'd have blues right now if they weren't as loud as they are, went with clears instead.

Take everything I say with a grain of salt though, as like everyone says, switches are all personal preference.

A different person usually makes thread every time.

Which is why we occasionall[ have ergodox is god OP threads, and other times Topre is god OP threads.

Anyway, instead of listing specific boards, I think we should list brands on the buyers guide.

Split it between good, good for the price, and bad.

We could also mention a few noteworthy boards (like that hotswappable one).
