What do?

I'm building a workstation for myself at arch school.
My last desktop was something I put together in 9th grade, it still runs HDEs and an AMD athlon x2.
I'm usually running programs like revit and rhino for modelling and designing, will be exporting flythrough renders, and will post-process in Adobe suite.
Both programs tend to sit on the CPU for renders.
I want to run dual screens.
I can and will upgrade this thing a little over time, but only the RAM, Storage, and GPU, maybe HSF.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/vfWPwP

I plan on overclocking the 6600k at least 15%. More if i ever get a bigger fan.
I've already got a 2tb HDD on a seed box at home.
I'll be snagging old 24" displays off of craigs.

Could I get by with a smaller PSU?
Should I go for quality or quantity of RAM?
CPU advice is most appreciated.
>>
>>51856540
Depends on the size of those discs, but I'd delete shit first.
Then I'd get another cryogenic external, and stick everything on that, then start fresh on a new OS install.
If you really need anything from that old install, go back and carry it over to the new workstation manually.

Guess that's probably best, one's a 1tb and the other's 258gb. It's mostly movies/games but I've got all the movies backed up to my external too so I guess they don't really need to be on both. When you say cryogenic, what exactly do you mean. Just like formatted?

Fury does poorly at 1080 compared to its power. 390x can match it on certain titles.

Well chosen, powerful and balanced.

But man, that psu is overpriced as fuck
>>
>>51856843

>>
>>51855399

980ti destroys everything in 1080p and 1440p no discussion.

390x If you want a 1080p machine. You can still go 1440p, but you'll need to turn down some things for smooth constant 60 fps.

Fury is a funny case. Better then 390x at 1440p, worse in some cases at 1080p.

It's basically a build I've been upgrading on which is why there's 2 Seagates for two different prices for example. How do you guys think a single 390 will work for 5760x1080?

>>
970 vs 960 for 1080p
>>
should I get a case with or without a window for my build.
>>
>>51858888
With a 390 a game that it will normally run at 60 fps on ultra at 1080p will run at 5760x1080 at 35 fps with aa off. 390 runs pretty much everything 1080 at 80+ fps currently.

I'd say it would be pushing it. that res is about between 1440p and 4k in requirements.
>>
>>51859018
960 should be able to handle 1080p, but 970 will make sure you have no problems at all for pretty much any game.

>>51859049
Depends if you want to see whats inside or not. Usually windowless cases have more spaces for fans or sound dampening material on the panel where the window would be.

I usually don't play on Ultra anyway. Usually high with DoF and AA turned off and whatever the technical name for pop in distance is turned to medium.

Paying the extra $80-100 for the 390x is a bit much, so I'll probably just upgrade my PSU, overclock the 390 and eventually grab a 2nd one and watercool them so I can finally have an excuse to expand my 240-X. I kinda got the card with the intention of eventually crossfiring it later on since it had plenty of VRAM.

>>
>>51859196
The 390x isn't worth it anyway. 5% increase in frame rate at 1440p over 390 and for the price you could crossfire 290s.

It's been making clicking noises too. I've never had that happen to me before with a cpu cooler...

the fuck is going on? He hasn't been bluescreening or crashing or anything that would indicate his processor is overheating.

>>
>>51860996

Does he mean his fan? The heatsink is a giant piece of metal. His fan could just have something hitting it or may be dying. Did you actually inspect the part?
>>
>>51860957
Eh europe prices are too much. I don't know the country but something like http://de.pcpartpicker.com/p/NBWj6h would just be so much cheaper for like 90%+ of the performance in the worst case.
>>
>>51861244
Do you already have a 1150 board? Get the 4690k. First build? 6600k. There's no real difference in performance so there's no real need to upgrade if you already have an i5 compatible board.
>>
First build ever. Is it better to go with an i5 6600?

Of course it will. Games are made to run on consoles and its not even out of the question gen nine ships with a 390 equivalent were it to come out three years from now.

The new cards when they show up. You might see something like a 480x being 390 two years from now.
>>
>>51861475
The only future proofing I'd worry about right now is making sure you can support 16gb of system ram. Having an m.2 gen 3 x4 socket which you do, and maybe always consider going with a 800w or higher and having two 8x pcie lanes on your mobo so that you could sli if the opportunity came up.

Can somebody help me confirm this is a hardware failure on the part of my GPU? It's an MSI R9 390.
>Card is seated correctly
>After installing drivers, PC crashes (bluescreen)
>Subsequent restarts, screen fades to black immediately after windows loads
I've reseated the card in a different slot, same issue. I don't think it's the motherboard. The one time it ran for more than a few seconds, it ran Metro 2033 fine, and Speccy recognized it as a 390 before it bluescreened again.

I'm about to ship it back out for a replacement, but does anybody have any ideas before I do?
>>
>>51862452
Ship it back doing something to fix it like changing the bios would just void the warranty anyway. Only real think you can do is upping the voltage but having to do so means its not a factory working card anyway.

>>
>>51863400
a 4790 will be much better than a 6600 and a 980 ti is essentially a generation ahead in power. It would have to be an i5 haswell against an i5 skylake to even be much of a debate and even then cpus simply dont age like gpus.

Any Nvidia cards that perform on part with the 390 for around the same price range? Just heard pretty shitty things about the 390 and can't afford a mistake. PC primarily used for photography/video editing, audio editing, movie watching, and gaymen.

Worth noting they Vidya I play is nothing modern. Far cry 3, Elder scrolls, fallout, war thunder, and in looking for a decent mmo. Just want high fps and decent graphics.. and scared to buy a 390. Would just like alternatives.. unless they really are the most bangs for bucks.

>>51868254

Pretty nice.

Why only a bronze PSU?
>>
>>51868386
>heard pretty shitty things about the 390
>scared to buy a 390
Yeah the dozens of reviewers and tens of thousands of owners are all wrong and the 390 is secretly shit. You figured it out snowflake.
>>
>>51868489
>Why only a bronze PSU?
anything higher is placebo.
>>
>>51868557
Do they perform similarly or not?
>>

lolwat. all the prices show 0$

Here's the pooinloo rig for my amerifriends

HDD is too expensive faggot, get an usb stick
>>
>>51868386

well, the 390 has about 2.5k shaders, a cursory search shows nvidia cards with a similar number costing about £100 more (£400 vs £300), i don't know if number of shaders is a particularly useful measure when talking about nvidia vs amd tho
>>
>>51868617
Why not? Sorry I'm new here. Spent my childhood gaymen and am recently getting back into /g/ related shit, after taking up photography and audio recordings of /out/ related shit.
>>
>>51868685

well, shader count is a rough measure of the raw power of a card, but there might be other differences that make eg 100 nvidia shaders worth 120 amd shaders, or the other way round (although it seems unlikely). there's also all the other numbers, so i use shader count as a rough estimate of equivalence but i don't really know how precise it actually is.
>>
>>51868608
I didn't pay retail for anything so the prices would be useless anyway.
>>
>>51868617
Its not the specs on 390 demolish the 970 but they are still equal.
>>
I recently fucked up and ordered a gtx 980 and i5 6600 instead of 980 ti and 6600k. Should I bother replacing both or any of them? I'm going to run 1080p
>>
>>51868736
Good to know, wanting to push 3/4 1080p displays, so raw power sounds important. Advice based off this info?

Again, not trying to run metro on ultra high settings with 140fps. Can't afford more than $400 on a card.

depends what you paid. In fact I'd even be leery of spending my shekels on even the cheapest 980 when pic related is available.
>>
>>51868808

personally i'd say 390 but then i have some wierd brand loyalty thing towards amd. it does look like your choice is between 390 and 970. a bit of googling seems to indicate that they're pretty similar performance-wise.

they aren't comparable at all.

What's power color compared to Radeon? And for that matter, should I be more interested in the 290x or the 780ti for what I'm trying to accomplish?

I want to build something for running RetroArch in my living room. How bad will this do? Should I just get an raspberry pi, and not bother with PlayStation games?

The case and AMD kinda scares me, but maybe thats me being a faggot. First time build.
Thanks

>>51869074
780 ti and 290x are older cards. Power Color is a secondary vendor for radeon cards. They and others make their own coolers.

Thinking about getting a 2nd 390 in a few months. I've heard sketchy things about Rosewill PSU's, but it's got a decent number of reviews and is 4 starred. Is it worth it?

Unless you're doing any encoding/rendering along with gaming, I'd drop down to an i5 and get a 390.

There's also faster RAM for less:

Oh ok, thank you. So anon might be been wrong about the shader similarities, but will going with either card (390 or 970) allow me to run say skyrim at 60+fps on ultra with mods, along with good performance in Adobe cs5 and light room 5? Ik Nvidia has CUDA for rendering assistance, but Idk if that really makes a difference.
>>
>>51869543
at that amount why not slap an extra 600 on and get a titan z

yeah easily. 390 will end up being better with its 8gb of vram against the 970s 3.5

Okay anon. Will take your word for it and pray /g/ isn't simply full of Radeon fanboys.

Care to help me find a Vesa mountable no frame/thin bezel 1080p monitor to triple up on? Anywhere from 21-24" will do. Budget under $200/panel

What 144Hz 1ms monitor do I get?

$320 at most If sub200 won't get me anything but shit and buttfucked.

I'm planning to get a gtx750ti and the price diference between the 1gb and 2gb version in my country is considerable, 2gb vram is really that worth?(i dont have much interest in open world games and 720p is fine to me)
