You click at the top right to add something. Add a shape, make the shape a rectangle. Make the rectangles the right size and color. Repeat that process, but in a slightly different color for the border.
You could also try using Zooper and then just sending it to the back, which would be easier for someone new to ricing, but you'll probably accidently hit it fairly often and it'll bring up the Zooper editor. If you do this, you'll have to find in the Nova settings where it lets widgets and apps sit on top of eachother.
