Is it worth it to get an SLI compatible motherboard? Is it worth it to SLI? I'm building my first rig and everything is almost ready to go except for the motherboard and CPU, I'm thinking of getting an i5 4690 but I don't know if it'll be worth it to SLI in the future as opposed to just upgrading the one card.

I did do a little bit of looking and most people seem to say that SLI is for pushing beyond what the strongest card is capable of, meaning it's more meant for enthusiasts who want more than a single card can offer. I'm looking into SLI as a means of adding another card when one becomes too weak in the future.

what kind of retarded meme is that?

I believe it's Egg Man from /r9k/. It's had the text "remember guys, no hope" on it but I whited it out.

Any halfway decent motherboard is going to be SLI or CFX compatible.

that looks like a very abstract eggman

Don't forget, SLI performance scaling isn't perfect: you might get 1.7x as much FPS, you might only get 10% more, or SLI might not work at all with the game. Also, you don't double graphics memory (both cards have the exact same data in memory so they can work together): if you need more graphics horsepower, you might also need additional VRAM which you're not going to get with SLI. When SLI works, it's nice, but it's not always perfect.

That being said, a motherboard that supports SLI isn't a lot more expensive than one without.

My original build guys:
http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/dVKnP6

I got a message saying that they no longer manufacture the board so I want to cancel it and switch.

Now I'm thinking of getting this:

I don't know.

for gaming? sli/crossfire is meme gaymur crap. always has been

for certain applications, especially in nix environments it can be useful.

on the gaming side - if youre into that sort of thing, by the time you would be looking to upgrade/add another gpu the actual chipsets are obsolete. at least in the sense they'll be lacking features newer cards will have that next gen games will undoubtedly be taking advantage of and you wont have.

Thanks guys, the more I look at it and the more I read I'm starting to see that it's not a good idea for someone like me who isn't made of money.

I haven't played any games really so if I can get a decent system now I should have entertainment for a long enough time till I need to upgrade board and things else anyways.

Probably don't want to SLI 970's. SLI doesn't double VRAM so you should make sure the cards have enough individually, and the 970 has the 3.5+0.5 GB bug.

>>51849184
Do you even use SLI/Crossfire outside of gaming? When programming GPGPU shit in OpenCL they just show up as seperate devices.

Yeah I read that from >>51849127
and that pretty much sealed it for me not going SLI.

This site here says that an 4690 will bottleneck a 970, that can't be true can it?

http://intel.thebottlenecker.com/

Thanks for your input.
>>
>>51849297
what? no it won't bottle neck.
>>
>>51849297
Definitely not for a 4690, the site says a 4670 is fine for a GTX 970.

Even a 4590 is still pretty high-end. I wouldn't worry about it, and I wouldn't really trust that site anyway, considering they refer to hard drives and SSD's as "memory" and then don't ask about the RAM at all.

Your build isn't completely optimal by the way. You're getting a 750 Watt power supply, while a proper 550 Watt (I run a 4790k and a GTX 980 on a Seasonic 520W) would be enough, and higher in quality for a lower price. I'm not sure about the SSD either, reviews I've read haven't been as positive about it as, let's say a Samsung 850 Evo.

i have yeah. in very specific uses which i dont want to get into, theyre very efficient. as far as their marketed use its meme tech with negligible price/performance.

this thing is big loads of bullshit
>>
>>51849526
I know it's not optimal, I was somewhat expecting I would SLI in the future and that power supply was the same price as a 600 watt at the time so I figured it wouldn't do much harm in going bigger.

I've never used an SSD before so anything faster than a mechanical drive will be good enough for me.

Yeah, you should get a new pc. I have this sick gaming rig on sale, it has a 4 core processor (14 GHz total!), 2 TB of memory and a 2 GB Nvidia 950 video card for only 1500 dollars.
>>
>>51849025
Maybe.

Having a second PCI-e x16 slot may be worthwhile, though, if you plan on increasing the number of monitors you have in your battlestation.

If you plan to get into VR gaming then SLI may be useful if they can get it so that each GPU renders each view.
>>
>>51849656
Oh no, I just want to sit at my computer with my 1080p 60Hz monitor and play games at a good frame rate. 1440p, 4K, VR, anything like that I have no interest in.

Thanks for the heads up though.
