The HM5 pads are pretty nice, I think the velour feels better then pleather,

Flat. Like the other guy in the old thread said, its a little powerful compared to the mids.

Is a wireless headset a good choice for someone who will be spending most of his time outside?

Or should I just buy earbuds?
>>
>>51849744
When you say headset, you mean a headphone that rests on your ears or over it right?

I mean, you can use it in that way. Gets rid of cord tangling crap, but I only know of some decent wireless gear. Keep in mind you still have to carry around the headphone and its bulk
>>
>>51849818
>When you say headset, you mean a headphone that rests on your ears or over it right?
Yeah, I meant that.

I'll just go for a wireless headphone, I guess. Earbuds stink and regular earphones hurt my ears.

My audio goes through HDMI to my monitor, and I plugged some pretty good Logitech speakers into my monitor. They have a small control pad that has a power switch, volume control, and an audio jack. This control pad does not control volume on any device plugged into it, only the speaker volume when the jack is empty.

I have no idea, since all headphones have their problems, you have to pick the ones you can deal with.

EQ helps, and even completely solves these issues, but that is mostly something you have to learn how to do.

alright, request assistance.

budget: $100-$300 pretty flexible, but more than $350 and i i'll start to second guess getting them. i'd like to see stuff from all over the price range because my parents are looking for something to get me for christmas. if it's too expensive for them, i'll just get it myself, but i'd like to give them some options.

location: canada. i'm fairly close to the states. i'd rather not travel over to get headphones, but if the price is a lot better south of the border, i'd probably do it.

source: at first my yamaha CA-2010 amp. later it will mostly be my laptop and (future) desktop. i don't have a dac yet

i was thinking full sized, but if you can find me some excellent iem's, i wouldn't be against getting them

comfort: gib quality plox

preferred balance: i don't know. i listen to mostly 60's, 70's, and 80's rock, but i'm expanding. i guess i need something good at a lot of things

I always think IEMs at home is weird, but some ideas:

Etymotic HF5, and buy an impedance adapter with it. Basically, you get the poor man's ER-4PT and the 4S with the impedance adapter. Maybe you will like/love it, maybe you will hate the sound, maybe you will hate the fit (this is alleviated by aftermarket tips) but it is something you should try.

Fiio EX1, it has barely any isolation, but some more bass than ER-4, not overblown bass. Much more shallow fit than Etys, so more likely to be comfy. It tunes itself a little more "crowd pleasing" for a lack of a better phrase. More suited to exercise use than train rides.
>>
Are there any IEMs under $200 that sound even remotely close to my ATH-M50s in terms of sound/quality (neutral; clear high/mids/lows; punchy, but not overwhelming bass)? I love my M50s a ton, but I need something I can carry around in my pockets during work/out in public.

Comfort takes priority over sound quality, more than anything else I want something circumaural. I'd prefer pleather over velour, but that doesn't really matter.

Anything not overly bass-heavy. I don't mind bass, but I wound up trying some recently that were so bass-heavy that listening to music was literally painful. Maybe those were just trash, but either way I don't want anything like that. So probably balanced/neutral.

Looking for something similar to this guy too. I'm looking for a new pair of headphones, upgrading from pic related (JVC H-AM750). I'm looking to spend about ~$150. A lot of sources seem to recommend the ATH-M50x as the best headphones in this price range, but on the other hand, it seems like a lot of people are saying they're only good for the bass and are way overrated by all the dubstep kiddies. Are the ATH-M50xs just meme headphones, or are they actually worth it? If not, what headphones would you recommend in this price range? I really just want a good all-around set of cans, but I listen mainly to prog rock ie King Crimson, if it matters.
>>
>>51853007
Thanks for the suggestion. However, I should probably add, I also want IEMs so I don't completely close out sound from the outside world when I'm walking/jogging/out with family/friends. Plus, I went with non-coiled cables for my m50s, which are great for home, but way too long for public use (I need to bundle them in my hand every time I want to walk around with them, which is a real pain).

Whats probably the best set of cheap 5 to 15 dollar headphones or ear buds for travel? Something that I won't care too much if they get broken or stolen.
Ear buds would need to be something like this that wraps around my ear. My ears are small and I haven't had much luck with buds staying in I can get the shitty ipod ones to stay in my ear but they start hurting after a few minutes of use.
>>
>>51855439
Motherboard's soundboard are usually shit. You could get a dedicated soundboard if you want better quality for gayming since it takes off the load of outputting sound from your cpu and reduces distortion, plus other details. Or you could get an external desktop DAC/AMP to connect to your PC, it will override the motherboard's soundcard for its own.

No, but I have the m50, I use them with a soundboard in my pc, Asus Xonar D1, and that's all I need for them, you could use an AMP instead. They don't need AMP for cellphones/mp4 players, they are loud enough plus their impedance isn't high at all, 38 ohm, meaning that anything will drive them good enough, your motherboard's soundcard isn't good enough to play high quality audio and/or its DAC is shit.

I'm looking to replace this piece of shit. I want something around $100 but I'm willing to go over if need be. Electronics cost a lot in Canada, a $200 item can easily turn into a $350 one here. So I want to keep things cheap.

Basically all I require is decent durability (I don't drop headphones or anything, they'll just sit at my desk), good sound quality, and comfortable enough that I can wear them all day without hurting.

I play a lot of vidya and listen to a lot of shit like Death Grips, Kendrick, basically meme music. So a good bass is important to me.
>>
>>51855365
lol, and? you think it cant be emulated?
>>
>>51856202
i think he means distortion. digital distortion/clipping is much worse than harmonic distortion and you can't really emulate analog distortion with digital means.

then again i might just be talking out my ass.
>>
>>51856218
all you have to do is record the frequency graph with the tube and compare it to how it sounded before the tube and write an eq to make it like the tube. has nothing to do with analog and digital
it wont be "perfect," but these conversions are never perfect... not digital to analog or vice versa in the first place. but this is a moot point, it will be >99% accurate
>>
>>51856234
distortion != frequency response

its easy to emulate the frequency response of a tube amp, just roll off the response from ~8khz

the harmonic distortion you can't just "EQ" digitally

>>
>>51856249
i dont understand why not. the distortion gives it a new sound, and if its a sound you can hear, then it can be measured and eqd. how does that not work?
>>
>>51856257
do you not understand that distortion is seperate to frequency response? altering the frequency response does not emulate distortion characteristics, adding or subtracting gain from frequencies alters the distortion at those frequencies but digital distortion is horrible while harmonic distortion can be tolerable.

>i dont understand
that much is for certain
>>
>>51853240
Absolute garbage. Grados with tubes. It's like you hate good sound.

Hello /hpg/, I have a question.
I've been using old Philips' SHS4700 "on ear" sporty cans for my daily commute, but they start to act wonky (as in the extended cable for the right driver breaks the connection, which is something they always do since it's my 2nd pair of those bad boys already and I used the previous model's 2 or 3 pairs too). So, I am in need of some nice "one ear" headphones with a "ear clip" thing. And it seems Philips doesn't make my model anymore.
I'm thinking of one of those two:
1) KOSS KSC/21
2) Panasonic RP-HS46E-K

Note: They'll be used with Sansa Clip.

Which one are better?

>what is a DAC

USB DACs tend to measure a bit noisier due to(commonly) poor(er) power filtering compared to optical but this is something you only see in measurements and in levels orders of magnitude below human perception.

>>51856265
Triode amps on average have higher levels of harmonic distortion than solid state amps. This is something that can easily be emulated in digital domain as long as the fidelity of the digital system exceeds that of the emulated analog one. A lot of them do. Heck you could probably emulate any "tube sound" with the usual recommended O2+ODAC combo. Some tube designs also exhibit roll off in lower end of the frequency response spectrum and that is just EQ. Depending on the amplifier and headphones used, damping can alter the sound too. This can't really be emulated(at least not easily) but putting a resistor to the output of according resistance will do the trick.

I'm really skeptical about the whole tube sounding different than solid state stuff. Both can be made so well it should be completely transparent to the listener. It just takes more effort to do it with tubes which tend to be inferior to similarly priced solid state designs in every way. And in the case of having audible differences, there is something wrong with either one of the designs. Mostly it's just expectation bias, hearing what you want to hear and placebo in full swing.

I'm really liking it, moreso than x2. It is really lightweight compared to it. And its so small too. The sound its really good, I haven't found headphone under $200 sounds this clear. Especially on its midrange, the vocal sounds really sweet there.

It has weakness on its bass extension as even m50x beat it on the bass extension. While the comfort is good due to light headband and weak clamp force. You may found the isolation is weak and your ears making contact with the driver. I've to change its pads into YAXI aftermarket pads, microfiber one. It really improves the comfort without meddling with the soundsignature. If anything, it improves it.

What does /hpg/ think of Marley headphones? Been using these puppies until recently when one ear stopped working unless I bent the cable a specific way. Cost under 100 NZD and sound quality seemed alright, although I don't have a lot of experience with headphones so I probably can't really tell good from bad that well. They look rather nice too, sorta like ww2 radio operator headphones or something.

What kind of stuff did you use them for? I suppose Reggae would work best for them, being in honour of Bob Marley and all that. I read somewhere they don't work so well for Electronic/Dubstuff type music, which I don't really listen to so they suited me well. Lows are generally from 20Hz to 200Hz, mids are from 200Hz to 2kHz and highs are from 2kHz to 20kHz. It's a bit vague. Better just to describe the sounds more precisely which you are talking about and specify the frequencies themselves if possible.

Sort of a random question, but I figure one of you all might have input on this.

I've been looking into open-back headphones and I will be attaching a modmic. Will the mic pick up sound leaking from the open-back? I'm sure it depends on how loud the volume is, but just generally speaking.

Hey, /hbg/, I want a Corsair h2100 (or maybe the h1500 because is 30€ cheaper), but I don't know if these are good enough for what it costs (120€, wireless and 7.1).

Stax-009 or Beats?

Why do these look exactly the same? They even have the same specs.

Also, what about the cloud II? These are the same as the others but has 7.1, which helps a lot when gaming.
>>
>>51858166
we would recommend that you buy a headphone and mic separate, and attach it to them, which would give you the most for your money. if you dont want to do this, get the hyper-x cloud like >>51858137
said. if you are willing, try something like m40x + v-moda boompro
>>
>>51858264
7.1 is not a good thing. stereo can emulate surround sound just fine. youre destroying the quality a shitton by introducing tons of physical drivers
>>
>>51858264
Cloud IIs have virtual surround, it's simulated by the USB sound card. The headset itself is the exact same thing as the Cloud I, just in different colors.
As for why they look exactly the same as the QPads, the Clouds are rebrands of the QPads with a braided cable and an extra included set of earpads.
>>
>>51858264
>These are the same as the others but has 7.1, which helps a lot when gaming.
It's not 7.1 and it doesn't help in gaming. Now start your search again and avoid anything that is labeled as surround sound.

95% of the time it's not physical drivers, it's just garbage DSP. Not that either former is better.

My phones has generates static noise when wearing iems, only audible with in silent environments. Would getting a (basic) mobile amp like the fiio e6 remedy this? Moving from 16ohm to 32ohm helped a bit, and not having the issue with the same iems from different sources (tried other phones too for comparison)
>>
>>51845754
You do realize you'll be messing with the sound quality as well if you do that. The velour hm5 pads would probably be slightly more comfortable because of the larger space to put your ear without it touching the sides. I wouldn't risk it though as they are already comfortable enough + you'll most likely ruin the sound quality of them as well.

It depends. The price of the M50s seems to fluctuate more than any other headphone. It bounces around from $80-$160 like a Mexican jumping beam. If you can get them for <$100, they're good and live up to their reputation. For anymore than that, and they're significantly outclassed.

Piston v3 & Hybrid owner here. I've used several sub-$150 IEM's and both of them can compete in that pricerange easily.

v3 has a flatter sound signature. Very good mids and soundstage. v4/Hybrids have a "V" shaped sound signature; lots of bass and treble. Great for electronic, metal, etc

I got both of them for $17 each, and honestly you should buy both. If you only like one, gift the other one. You can claim they're worth $100 too; they'll never know.
