How are you liking the strap? I was looking for a flat leather strap to use on my King Seiko. The watch is pretty thin, so I didn't want to get one of those huge padded straps, but by the same token finding 19mm ones is tough.

The "leather" strap I've got now is total dogshit, so it needs to go.

I love the strap, but I do wish that it was a bit of a darker shade of brown. The seller I bought it from sold it as brown, but I think it was really the "honey brown" version of the strap. For some reason you can get the honey brown strap for $30 on ebay, but the dark brown one is $60.
The strap is very comfortable, and it has much better stitching and leather than other leather straps I have used.

/g/entoomen,

Please direct me if this is not the proper thread for this inquiry. I was given this watch by a deceased relative. I am not trying to get information so that I can sell it; I am trying to get information because of the sentimental value the watch holds.

I tried search engines with no luck, so I am asking you guys. My grandmother told me that the watch was most likely purchased in the late 1940s/early 1950s.

I have taken three photographs for you and will post the next two immediately after this post.

The watch is in good working order, but to my dismay, there is no information on the backplate.

I am requesting to know if there is a resource out there that can be used to teach me more about the watch, whether it is real, and anything else I can learn.

Thank you in advance!

Look at the picture >>51845223 . See the raised paint on the numbers? That's lume. This watch was made before 1960, so it has radium lume. Post 1960, radium lume was slowly phased out, replaced by tritium and sometimes promethium lume.

The blanks for the cases are made in Switzerland, but are finished in Germany. I'm pretty sure the sapphire crystals are made in Switzerland as well.

Description
This a lifestyle, horology and culture channel inspired by the loves and passions of its host TGV.

Known affectionately by his closest fans as "The Governor", TGV was born in London, the son of a British aristocrat and an Italian doctor. He was raised in both countries and has traveled extensively to many exciting international cities. While studying in Florence, Italy, he fell in love with a New Yorker, and subsequently moved to New York City where he currently resides and works in music, film production and audio engineering.

From the sophistication, prestige and heritage of the British establishment to the rich dolce vita of gritty, working class neighbourhoods of Italian tenements, TGV has had access to two exciting and polar opposite worlds. This has given TGV a truly unique insight and refreshing outlook on life, style and culture.

Welcome to the Urban Gentry Channel.

I have to order something though, crap dollar or not. The Japleather strap is too shitty. You really need to get the Germans to do this kind of stuff, they had all sorts of experience making leather goods at their little holiday camps in Poland.

Speaking of which, is Riemer Oswald (RIOS1931) any good? There's one for pretty fucking cheap on the Yuropoor site, and it seems like it's exactly what I'm looking for (black, non-padded, matte finish): http://www.watch-band-center.com/shop2/index.php

>>
>>51851835
used to wear one of these as my daily driver.

i had it on a leather nato strap. i really liked it
>>
I'm kind of a hair muscle-y guy with wide wrists.

I'm looking for something to put on a NATO band but that's larger than 38mm since 38mm looks like I'm wearing a woman's watch. I'd like something maybe a little versatile but not too expensive as it would likely be a beater that I'd wear everyday. Keeping time is important so a quartz automatic is fine.

I was considering the Timex Expedition but I'm not so sure I like the black casing. I like the black face and everything but not so sure I care for the black case.
>>
>>51851753

Yes, absolutely, but at least Rolex still makes damn good watches. Someone in a /wt/ once put it this way: Omega wants to charge 95% of Rolex prices while putting in 50% of Rolex effort.
>>
>>51846084
Grand Seiko has a better case finishing but Nomos looks more "modern" and definitely screams more for your attention.
>>
>>51851885
What's wrong with the PVD case?
>>
>>51851737
Isn't the thing with buying a modern rolex that you are acknowledging you are overpaying but do so anyway because you have the luxury to do so?

It's a brilliant new marketing tactic but I genuinely thought that was the point of owning a luxury brand rather than a tool watch (or even a dress watch) that costs a fraction so long as the construction and movement are quality
>>
>>51851915
Just not a fan of the color I think. I think I'd prefer something that's maybe a little more traditional polished metal.

I don't know. I'd likely be wearing it with jeans a lot so maybe the dark case wouldn't look so bad. Maybe I've just never owned a black face/black case watch. Seems odd to me.
>>
>>51851835
No 5 comes standard on a nato strap, they are usually two piece nylon bands.

I would get one with a nylon strap and use the 50 dollars you save to buy an aftermarket bracelet that will be worth it.
>>

Rolex used to be that 'tool watch' brand though.

>>
>>51851962
Used to be. Up-sizing all of their watches and making them visually more chunky and giving them shiny ceramic bezels and putting all these walls of text on the dial about how great they are do nothing to make the watches more functional but they sure do make them more flashy and bling.

Why are folded endlinks so common? On a watch with folded links it's one thing, but the cost difference can't be significant at all on one that has an otherwise solid bracelet, can it?
>>
>>51852497
Pure conjecture warning:

I'd say that the manufacturing cost for a single link is negated by the fact that there are typically a lot of links in a single bracelet so they get their money's worth from the tooling. But the end-links are completely different pieces which they make far fewer of. So its not worth it to make the tools for solid end-links.
>>

tonneau master race.jpg
153 KB, 750x1000
is it too big 4 me
>>
>>51852578
I admit I'm not very familiar with manufacturing methods, but they're CNC milled, aren't they? The machine cuts it out based on a computer model, what special tooling is required for that?
>>
>>51852578
In addition, most bracelets taper slightly in the first few links, so those would all have a similar small amount compared to the rest of the links.
>>
>>51852620
Then perhaps it really is just a small cost cutting measure.

If your making a bracelet then its clearly visible from the outside if its folded or solid. But with the end-links it's much harder to tell. So there is not a much of a reason to make them solid when they can save a dime on the metal by making them folded.
>>
>>51852766
Besides, its not like the major watch manufacturers particularly want to give you a perfect product at a low price. Its better for them if the solid end links are actually something that makes the more expensive models more tempting.
>>
>>51852849
heh yeah, that too.
>>
>>51852849
That's true enough, thanks capitalism
>>
>>51852849
At least there are microbrands that'll give you solid endlinks, a thick sapphire crystal and other guff for cheap.
>>
>>51852620
>folded links
They're literally folded. You take a thin piece of steel and stamp it into shape. Milling is taking a solid block and removing all the material you don't want. If they were milled then they would be solid links but that would take more effort and waste more material because you would need a solid rectangular block to mill the link out of rather than just a sheet.
>>
>>51852924
Yeah it's nice to see a new niche being filled like that. The feeling of having a watch you know only a couple people in the world have is neat too in a way.
>>
>>51851334

The urushi and enamel dial Seikos have both been growing on me a lot lately, they seem to have quite a bit of Credor DNA in them. It sounds like they would have really neat looking dials, but there's no way to see one in person and there's no way I'm dropping that much money on one without seeing it first.

Also I have no problem with the 6R15, but I kind of wish they had something nicer than that since they cost so much more than a SARB or something with the same movement. The modified 6R movements with complications and 28800 beatrate fit that bill but at the same time I kind of prefer just the simple date-only watches.
