Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
No news.
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

>>
>>51839293
Any particular reason? the t420 has a really nice keyboard or some such?
>>
>>51839300
the t420 has a real keyboard and not the new shitlet type keyboards, as well as the fact that the t420 overall was the real last thinkpad, however if you do pickup a t430 it has updated specs and etc... and only needs the keyboard replacing, but it does require some bios mod or something else, however it is quite easy to do, i personally have a t420 with an ssd and ive thrown my hdd into an ultrabay, it works wonders :)
>>
>>51839300
Yes. T420 has a seven-row traditional laptop keyboard, T430 has a six-row chiclet keyboard.

The T430 keyboard is still good for a chiclet keyboard, but it's still a chiclet keyboard
>>

Cool, anon. Thanks.
>>
>>51839293
>>51839300
>>51839313
>>51839321

The T430 has the same underlying mechanism as the T420 keyboard (i.e. it has the same key feel), but has backlighting.

It's also easier to clean.

The problem is the layout, which is an objective step back from the 7 row layout.

Putting a T420 keyboard in to a T430 has drawbacks, you lose the functionality of several keys.

There's no BIOS mod. Ivy Bridge BIOS mods aren't possible, AFAIK because you need the BIOS image to be signed by the manufacturer.

There's been talk about using a hardware flasher to get a modded BIOS working but it's a pretty hardcore mod (think flashing Libreboot on to a T400).

Also, to expand on my previous post about the keyboard, the feel is identical unless if you buy a machine with the reduced key travel (X1, X240/250).

On the T440p, it's even better than previous machines as there's 0 flex compared to previous machines - the keyboard is directly screwed in to the rollcage.
>>
>>51839473
ahh okay, well i personally prefer the t420 keyboard when typing over the t430 keyboard due to the key styles, :)

Poll time /g/

How much battery life do you get on your T420 with original 9-cell batteries?

Please include your OS, your usage pattern and the wear level.

I'm about to buy a secondhand but supposedly close-to-100% original battery, and I would like to know how much of an upgrade it will be over my aging 6-cell.

m8 what ssd are you getting? I'm getting an ADATA SP920 128GB for my T420 this week and I want to clone my W10 setup onto the SSD just like you.

Did I do good /g/?

I want to add some RAMs and one of my old SSDs... but it looks like this guy only takes those 7mm 2.5 disks. Any suggestions 250GB and up?

Description says there is no OS, any suggestions? I have played with ubuntu , willing to do whatever including gentoo meme, but I want teh tablet functionality. Is there a simple way to restore the windoze 7 that came with the machine originally? Ad says "This tablet is in perfect working condition. There is no operating system installed. You are required to install your own OS. It has a Windows 7 Pro COA sticker under the battery." watdo?

I prolly need to find usb 2 or 1.1 or whatever for install whether it is linux distro or windoze... womp womp.

Also any other upgrade suggestions are welcome. I have a pair of Samsung ATIV 9s with 128gb ssd 8gg RAM and something like 3440x1600 resolution, but I am always worried I may break the screens (got both as refurb for like 650 each). Also fuck windoze 8/8.1 cancer.

I just wanted something I wasn't going to be afraid to break when not flying for shitposting shitcoding notetaking that was not a fucking phone and got roped into your meme.

Going to try to buy up min bid t60s for 10usd each and resell for 500% markup like the guy in the last thread.

My battery is fucked, it's at like 35% design capacity. Power manager gauge says around 2 hours when it's not plugged in, but I try to keep that to a minimum. I've already ordered a new genuine 9cell so I'll report back when that arrives.

Also, just finished repasting. Remarkably easy job, only pain was the wlan/wwan cable management. T60 remains the easiest I've worked with, but this definitely beat out completely disassembling the X220 or dealing with the speaker cable hell of the T510.

Lowest brightness, lowest clockspeed, using Intel 3000 only.

A T430 might have better performance over the T440p.
Build wise, older models are better.
I haven't used a T440 model yet, but I've owned an X1Carbon 2 and 3 gen models, their keyboard feel is atrocious compared to the T430.
With that being said, I like the build quality and keyboard feel of the ChromeBook Pixel a lot more over the X1C3 that I am dailying.
Only the glossy display and no trackpoint is its drawbacks, its 3:2 display is awesome.

Post design shit that only makes sense if you're designing for failure

>Hinges that are mounted in a way to rely on the 2mm plastic cover (and the clips underneath)

>Unfiltered fan grille
>Bottom-facing fan grille
>Unreinforced top cover, requires less force than an 5 year old can output to break.
>No heatpipes, directly using metal case as heatsink
> Hole in top casing under keyboard over critical components in case if spills
> Flimsy "ribbons" used from power jack to PCB.
>Heat vents upward towards LCD Panel, melts glue, makes it look like shit / fail faster
>Underpowered Cooler / Overpowered hardware. Causes GPU solder joints to crack, rendering machine unable to use the GPU, despite it being present

I think these are about the most egregeous errors of laptop design i've seen. These are all still present on shit laptops and "premium"-class laptops. Consumers seem to be fine with it.

as long as you don't play video games, 2007 hardware is still fine for everyone. can you beat a complete sub-$70 laptop that won't break? I stand behind thinkpads, because when the nvidia card explodes, the carbon fiber will protect me.
>>
I don't really need to move a laptop around very much. My main OS is Linux, booting into Windows occasionally to play old games (i.e. C&C Generals). Apart from that I don't do anything more demanding than web browsing and watching videos.

Would I be better off with the T420 or the T510?
>>
>>51844636
T510 has a better screen and will probably suit your needs well enough. It's absolutely massive compared to the T420, though. If you've never used a widescreen 15" Thinkpad, you won't be prepared for its huegness.

>>
I'm having a persistent issue on both 7 and 10 on my T420.

sometimes I'll put it to sleep and on waking it back up, the screen never turns on. The drives are running, it's obviously on, but the power button glows like it's still asleep and the screen stays black. I have to hard reset it, and then it works fine.

Does anyone have any insight on this? I updated the BIOS and it still does it.

That's neat, and more/documentation than I'd seen before. Still, suggesting it to a noob as if it's anything but a moonshot mod is rather disingenuous.

There are still motherboard modifications required, of which the author still seems to be guessing somewhat about what was actually done to his board.

Possibly the same modder could be commissioned, but paying for shipping to china, custom hardware, labor, and shipping back would destroy most of the value proposition of a laptop with a second-gen i-series processor and intel 3000 graphics.

At this point the value proposition only seems to be justified if someone is *incredibly* picky about their keyboard.

How much should I expect to pay for a W520/W530 in the UK?

Can anyone give me some background on the FHD panels for the W520/30s? I want to know the different manufacturers and models of the panels to compare. I have an X220 and know that there were three Iterations of the IPS displays. I big concern is colour accuracy overall, this is why. As well as this, where is best to buy them? (excluding 'compatible' models)

While I'm asking, anyone know of a suitable device to connect two displays to the display port on a W series laptop?

Cheers, senpai.

W series are generally pretty rare in the uk, FHD models especially. If you're lucky you'll find a mid specced w520 around £350.
I'd say go with T520 instead and just upgrade it to quad core & fhd.
>>
>>51848963
I'm not confident about running Photoshop and Lightroom off of dedicated graphics, that's all - will be working with multiple high resolution images simitaneously (Around 35mp each) on two additional displays.

I had considered the T520 but it is because of this that I decided against it. Also, would you mind pointing me in the right direction of a reliable seller of the FHD displays?

Also, in regard to storage I intended to use a MSATA SSD and two Travelstar 7K1000s. Presumably physically it shouldn't be an issue but I have a few concerns/queries:

>Is the MSATA port running at Sata II?
>Is it possible to perform Raid via the BIOS and not the OS? Would use Windows and Linux so I would prefer it if it wasn't managed through the OS.
>>
>>51849009
Just buy from a UK based reseller on eBay, make sure they have a good return policy and send them a message to confirm the exact model they will ship to you before buying.
Not sure what you mean about dedicated graphics, W series also has a dedicated nvidia GPU.
>>
>>51849115
>Is the MSATA port running at Sata II?
Yes it is.
>Is it possible to perform Raid via the BIOS and not the OS? Would use Windows and Linux so I would prefer it if it wasn't managed through the OS.
This is only possible with machines that were custom ordered with the raid option from lenovo. The odds of you finding one of these are incredibly slim.
>>
>>51849118
Sorry, meant integrated graphics.

>>51849149
Ok, well I was only going to use the two HDDs assuming I could setup some kind of Raid... given that I am also limited to Sata II I suppose my best option would be an SSD in the primary drive bay and then a single Travelstar in the secondary bay.

Thanks.
>>
anyone know how much a IBM TransNote is worth?
>>
>>51849209
Ah right, well the T520 has an nvidia option though not quite as good as the one in the W.

Yeah, so initially my plan was:
>250GB MSATA - 200GB Windows/50GB Linux
>1TB Travelstar7200k in primary bay
>1TB Travelstar7200k in Ultrabay
HDDs would have either been in Raid 0 (Can backup externally) or Raid 1

Guess I will have to do:
>250GB SSD in Primary bay - 200GB Windows/50GB Linux
>1TB Travelstar7200k in Ultrabay

The lack of the extra 1TB isn't too much of a concern as I have a 15TB NAS - would be better practice to move everything there anyway.

It will most likely not be in that condition or look like that, ironically I think it would be safer to go on Ebay and buy from someone which has good feedback and offers lots of good quality pictures, that way you will be able to see what you will actually get.

>>
>>51849541
Hmmm, well I suppose it depends on how you look at it.

I currently own an X220 and have done so for 6 months or so. I personally cannot speak on behalf of the X201s or the CPUs generally used in them but going by my experience with the X220 I would solidly recommend it (for the price I payed).

For what it's worth, the initial £50 - £100 difference between X220 will be worth it seeing as it is almost a given that the X220 should outlast the X201 enough to warrant that difference.

Stick in a Msata SSD and and additional drive along with 8GB or even 16GB of RAM... you will be laughing.
>>
>>51849541
220 is better all round and worth the minor price bump.
>>
>>51849541
>>51849643
Just to add to that... the thing I prefer about the X201 is the aspect ratio of the screen... for the size of the laptop itself I suppose it adds quite a bit of screen estate.

So I threw in a small (120GB) 850 EVO SSD and installed Ubuntu on my old T400 because I didn't feel like lugging around the W520 when I traveled. Holy shit, this thing feels like a whole new computer. And everything just werks out of the box, which is a huge contrast to Linux of 6 years ago.

For older models, I'd say the SSD is a worthwhile upgrade. Memory usage is also substantially lower than it was under Windows 7 (580 MB at idle vs 1.5 GB).

This can be a good thing, there are stories of brake ins where they stole a shiny macbook and left the thinkpad assuming it was some shitty 90s laptop. looks have to do with function, even giving half a shit about how shiny the laptop is means the mind is focused in the wrong place.
>>
>>51853173

Yeah, I feel this gets ignored a lot. I'm sure thick laptops like ThinkPad's will be more reliable than super sleek ones, though newer TP's seem to be getting thinner as well.
>>
>>51853173
Funny story about that, actually. Back in 2010, when I was in second year university, my roommates and I went out to some even on campus and came back to our house to find it had been broken into. Both their Macbooks were gone, as was the TV, the PS3 and our Nintendo DS units. But my 15.4" T60p was still on my desk, completely undisturbed.
>>
>>51853213
that's just because components are getting smaller and efficiency is going up so there's no need for large batteries when you can achieve thinness and good battery life at the same time

I imagine macfags trying to argue that it's a business laptop yet they can't connect to literally any projector, or TV, for a presentation.

>>51853309
you may be the story I was thinking of, since I remember it was a T60p that was worth more. Post every detail about this, including the shit you should have given the macfags for since they probably gave you some first on how the thinkpad wasn't shiny enough.

I second this. Post the story of the macfags and the mustardrace unstolen thinkpad
>>
>>51853584
I don't think I've shared my story before, but to be honest my Macfag roommates never really cared about my Thinkpad too much. When we first met in residence they made some joke along the lines of "holy shit, 1995's come back from the dead!", which made me slightly butthurt about being the only person on our floor without a new computer, but aside from that nothing much was ever said. We were more concerned with playing PS3 games (yes they did exist) and Brood War (when it still actually ran on OS X). The theft occurred about two weeks away from exams, which was a big problem for both of them since they lost all their notes. I didn't really feel like gloating about my Thinkpad considering their circumstances. I did chide them for not backing up, and after they bought their new computers (Macbooks again) they started listening to me about that. We ended up moving into an apartment with security after the end of second year, so theft was never really an issue again, but hey, backup is always a good idea.

Most real-life Macfags are actually pretty reasonable people and not the fucking Apple shills you run into on the internet. Except for iPad users, fuck them.

Why the Fuck would you carry your laptop by the battery
>>
>>51849255
At least $175, eBay he prices are crazy at times so you might net $500

>>51848831
Yeah, itll find it out if you're using knock offs.
>>
>>51848831
You should also use acpi -V on linux, don't know if there's a linux equivalent, but it will show how many hours it's been on and its last charged capacity. Actually serious question, is there any way to bypass this system and fake it and make it say it's new?
>>
>>51854460
It's comfortable and makes even the biggest memepads easy to carry with one hand. The mechanism that holds the battery in is strong, even my T60's battery which doesn't really lock anymore has never fallen out on me, and I carry it around pretty frequently. Even when your laptop is closed and not in use, having a rounded surface to hold is far more comfortable than a flat edge. There's a video that goes in more detail about how great it is but I don't remember where to find it.
>>
>>51854396
That isn't me but holeee shit, what a bizzarro coincidence. It's like there was a me posting from an alternate universe. Some key differences

>We went to a pub event, this guy was smokin' weed erryday
>This guy did not have his TV stolen, I did
>I only had the 1400x1050 panel, which on closer inspection is actually 15", not 15.4"
>My processor is a T7400
>Never owned a netbook, but I acquired an X61 for free from a friend, if that counts
>I stopped using the T60p in either late 2012 or early 2013 when I replaced it with a W510, which I think is a better computer

But everything else is eerily similar... the Macbooks being stolen while the Thinkpad is left, PS3 that was presumably used to play games, university student ghetto breakins, niggers, it's just further proof that Thinkpads are their own anti-theft device. As for my roommates, yeah, I figured I'd take the moral high ground and not be a dick about the whole thing. I think we all had a bit of a "bro code" going on that way.

Seriously though this is like something out of the Tatami Galaxy.

>Most real-life Macfags are actually pretty reasonable people
I object, many years ago I found myself at ground zero when a colleague of mine tried to convince me how great his iPod shuffle was, because he knew what music was on the device, so why would he even need a display? When he purchased a Mac mini he even brought it to work with him and acted out like it was his newborn or something. Another guy bought regular iPods in bulk because they kept breaking on him, when asked he duly replied "what else am I gonna do, there are no alternatives". And my boss at the time dressed up like Steve Jobs and prefixed all new project names with an "i", MacBook Air the greatest innovation ever! Apple this Apple that, all day long. I left the place before iPads came out.

1. I need to stop remembering everything that happens on /g/ and get a life.
2. The T60p has ethereal magic anti-theft properties and cannot be stolen by mortals.

Startech makes a flush one but it's $40+.

I've used the chinese AKE ones from ebay for $10 for 3 years and have not had a problem. on XP, 7, and Linux the latter of which has its own drivers for it.
>>
>>51854780
I said "most". I know some people who really like their Apple products and can be jackasses about them, but once most folks become adults they tend to grow out of the childish fanboy phase. I even know some Macfags who look down on people who use iPads as their "computer"... Or at all, for that matter.

I have respect to Mac dudes who idolize the Woz instead of Jobs.
Since I work at a recycler, we seldom get macs but there was a fellow who was all about the old models which was pretty cool.
He has a lot of older Mac hardware that I am interested in but would not know shit about.
He's cool, he'd come by and check specs but not be cheap, somewhat picky but he already had 2 models of the unit we had in stock.

>>

>eee pc

off topic, but I picked up an asus eee 1015pn for $80 on ebay a few months ago, I really like it. The pn is the model with a dedicated nvidia gpu (ION), which means it's good enough to handle the sims 2 and minecraft at a decent render distance. I get a GLmark2 score of about ~450 with it compared to ~300 for my x200.

Windows 10 was unbearable, Windows 7 feels alright and lightweight linux distros feel great.

Certainly wouldn't want to own it as my only machine but it's bretty good if you just want something light in your bag to send emails with etc in between classes.

I also have a 1015PEM which is basically the same thing minus the GPU. Have to drop the view distance down to 2 chunks to play minecraft but everything else feels pretty much the same.
>>
I want to buy a T420 but i can't find one that has:
>1600x900 screen
>reasonable price
>in the European Union
>is not broken
do any of you own one with the 1366x768 screen?
is it shit compared to the higher resolution one?
>>
>>51857019
Funny, Windows 10 was faster than Windows 7 on my X300. Only problem really is that the trackpoint doesn't quite work properly- it seems to ignore scroll input in File Explorer and Edge. I think it's kind of ridiculous considering just about every feature works without a hitch in Linux, and considering newer trackpoints supposedly work.
>>
I might buy a genuine 9-cell for my T420 for 52USD.

>Specs:
>42T4912
>LG
>Wear level: 0%
>Cycle count: 5
>Manufactured: 2010-10
>First used: 2011-03

Incredibly good price to be sincere family.

My question is: is it going to hold a charge considering it's so old (5 years), regardless of cycle count?
>>
Can you guys help me price my T420?

I got it 2 months ago, and it is a great machine, I just find the screen and noise fan annoying. I love the keyboard (I replaced the one it came with) and the trackpoint has grown on me. However I want to try the new chiclet keyboard and the footprint of the newer models (*40 and up).

I have 16GB of ram. 250GB Sandisk II SSD. 1TB Seagate HDD.
>>
>>51853522
Note the word reliability. If I can get a bulky laptop and a slim one with the same specs at the same price, which one is going to last longer? ThinkPad's are modifiable much more easily and will last longer.

Then again, most consumers don't want a laptop that lasts 5+ years. They're fine with switching every few years.
>>
>>51857877
I have a T420 with 1366x768, mostly cause it was really difficult to find a higher res one. But I'm used to it since my previous laptop, an Inspiron, had the same res. It's fine for me, but I'd definitely prefer the higher res one.
>>
>>51858503

Well, it may be because the comparison is between Windows 7 Starter and Windows 10.

Win 7 starter only uses up ~700 mb of RAM after a cold boot, whereas the (probably pirated) Win 7 Ultimate that came on my 1015PEM ate up 1.86 Gb just sitting at the desktop. (I've since nuked the pirated Win 7 Ultimate in favor of Lubuntu).

I didn't even last long enough to measure the ram consumption on Win 10 before rage quitting and downgrading back to 7. Only reason I upgraded to begin with was to try to sort out the issues I was having with windows update.

The difference of .7 vs 1.86 GB ram usage is very significant when the platform is locked to a max of 2 GB ram.
>>
Is the Windows 7 and 8 free upgrade to 10 finished? I can't find it on the MS website.
>>
>>51859433
No, it's going on until July of 2016. They want as many people as possible to upgrade to the botnet.

>>51857877
1366x768 is fine on a 12" or even a 13" screen, but that's not to say it's as versatile, and once you start getting to 14"+ then it looks really blurry and terrible. While I think 1600x900 is over-hyped (it looks and feels like shit after using 1920x1080 for a while), having those extra 132 vertical pixels is a fucking godsend.
>>
Is there a way to prevent a battery from charging in Linux? Similar to how the Lenovo power manager in Windows could be configured to only start charging at 95%, 90%, whatever it was that you wanted. It seems Linux wants to charge it so it's always full, all the time.

>>
>>51860173
Well, I just started up the media creation tool from the site and it seems to be downloading win10 on a USB for a reinstall. I hope this works out.
>>
>>51860173
I had Windows 7 Home Premium or some thing like that in my ASUS.
I made a backup of all my shit, then did a clean install of a Windows 7 Pro ISO.
I don't remember if I "activated"/cracked it, but then I installed Windows 10 Pro with it, installed a small program to check the Win10 key, mad an ISO of Win 10 and did a clean install of 10 with that second ISO.

Acivated it with the key I exctracted from the Win 10 upgrade. Everything's working properly.

Remember, that Win 10 ISO is tied with the key, it won't work without the key extracted from it.

I bought an x230 for about 400 pounds on eBay. It looks brand new.
