Hey, so I've been looking at laptops recently, I just need something for the occasional media/browsing on the go. I'll just toss a Linux dis on whatever I end up getting. However I'd like it to be as light and portable as possible. Is a MacBook Air that stupid of an idea? Those are not that expensive used and I can't seem to find anything else cheap and ultralight

Theres no point in buying apple if you will install Linux. You should consider keeping OSX, it can replace Linux in any aspect and offer you better integration of the hardware, better battery life, a more consistent and beutiful desktop environment and more software.

Yes.
Asus Zenbook ux305. Same price NEW, has actual usable ports (3x USB 3.0, sd card reader etc) is thinner than the newest Macbook, and is a fucklot easier to get Linux on.
