At release, sure. Especially since Sony had such a shit selection on PSN, there was no reason to get the thing. Memory card prices were (and still are) awful for it. It was a bit of a pain in the dick as a while.
Right now, it's one of the better PSP models, go install CFW. Only issue is that M2 memory is stupid expensive, literally Vita memory prices (actually, Vita memory might have gotten cheaper than M2 by now).
No one in 2015 is actively using their UMD drive, unless they still have some games they haven't copied to the Memory Stick. No one with any sense is actually running a game from the UMD drive.

most PSP models are really shit tier with build quality though, even the 1000
and my 2000 feels like I'll break it with casual use, just using it to listen to music (hold.prx is a thing of beauty, fucking love PSP plugins) and occasionally play a game
