!!!!PURCHASING ADVICE GUIDELINES!!!!

When seeking purchasing advice, list your country/carrier, what phones are in your price range, and your budget at minimum

Simply asking for advice without stating your nation/carrier and listing what devices are available to you and also stating budget will likely get no response!

Sorry for handholding, but why should I get the Galaxy S6 edge?

Verizon/usa/no budget here

I don't want a huge phone.
It can be up to 128gb so I can live without a micro SD slot.
>>
>>51827738
No, it really isn't. My S4 still outperforms any 200 dollar phone in 2015 by miles. It still has a superior camera, and replacing the battery was cheap - I got 2 superior capacity batteries with a charging dock for 25 bucks.

Seriously, look at benchmarks for flagships from 2 years ago. Most are still far better than any $200 piece of shit.

For $200, in the US, that's only a fucking Moto G.

No thanks.

a Nexus device, preferably one of the newer ones since you will get 2 years of support. Since you don't want a huge phone, you should get the 5X, although that only goes up to 32GB.

If money is no object, you might consider getting the Z5 regular or Compact which has an SD slot. Z5 Premium is a meme.

Most of the power of modern processors isn't actually used in normal day to day use unless you play graphics intensive games. That's why a lot of modern processors have two quad core processors, a fast one and a slower one to save battery live. The snapdragon 808 in the Priv is more than sufficient for Android and also doesn't overheat that quickly, which removes the annoying performance drops the 810 has

The LG V10 is the higher end model of LG at 650€.

Other than that, the Note 5 is probably the highest performing phablet with a great screen but some ram management issues at 700+€.

The Sony Z5 premium is waterproof and supports SD cards, but has an imperfect camera app and average battery life. Great screen though, but will run you 750€
>>
>>51829218
The design is different if you prefer that. It also comes with the S-pen, which is quite useful. The screen isn't bend, which a lot of people may prefer. The battery life is also slightly better
>>
>>51829015
What's your problem with the G4 design? The back buttons?
I'm digging it so far. Other then some minor performance issues with the UI. Screen to body ratio is actually phenomenal.
A good trend they've kept with since the G2.

Wish they'd stuck a fingerprint sensor in it.

I'd absolutely love the V10 if they hadn't stuck that retarded second screen up top.
>>
>>51829562
>isn't bad that it's 2014 phone? i mean, with upgrades
The hardware is very similar to the Note 5, and actually Samsung isn't even selling the Note 5 in many European markets and keeping the Note 4 as its top Note model. Based on that I think it will likely keep receiving updates for at least 2-3 years. I can't really judge whether it will lag, but there is a good chance it will due to Samsung's rather poor ram management. Hardware wise there is no cause for concern though.

If you want the best update policy, you should probably go for a Nexus model, although they are unfortunately not quite as good as far as hardware goes
>>
If you don't need a phone right now just wait next year, it's probably gonna be a good year for phones

My Verizon Galaxy S4 shit itself the other day and I'm thinking of buying a Nexus 5X to replace it. This means I would have to switch from a microsim to a nanosim.

Will verizon turn me away if I ask for a new nanosim card but don't have a phone to activate it with? I've read that if I walk in there with a 5X they'll refuse to activate the new one since the 5X isn't in their system or something. Should I just buy a sim cutter off amazon or try to do it myself?

Never purchased an unlocked phone before, so I'm unfamiliar with the whole process.

Great, you can take picture in 4k resolution. You'll even be able to zoom a little bit on a 2k screen, why is this a problem to you?
>>
>>51830399
If you don't use your phone heavily it's solid enough.
Otherwise there are lots of phones you can get 2nd hand that are better.

Also if you're not partial to Android, consider a Windows phone because they're usually considerably cheaper.

>>51830375
Look for a nanosim cutter, you can get them on amazon. The sim chip is the same no matter the size, it's just the plastic around the phone that's the difference.

I've cut to micro sim with success, but nano sim is harder to cut to.

You can just try to ask Verizon if they can give you a nano sim for the 5X, worst they can say is no.

What reasons should I not have a Nexus X5 and/or a Nexus 6P?

Never owned a Google phone before
>>
>>51832561
The 5X looks great, but for the price you can do a little better I think.
The 6P is maybe the best Android phone out there right now, but the thin aluminum build bends like an iPhone.

Otherwise idk, they're both awesome looking devices that I'd consider if I was looking at a new phone.
>>
>>51832434
I managed to make it so Blackplayer was just the default. You gotta go to voice search settings in Google Now, then next time you ask it to play an album whichever app you choose becomes the default.

Is there a way to make Blackplayer not show album art on the lock screen?
>>
>>51832825
Nexus is 50 bucks off rest of the holiday season, pretty damn awesome phone for 329/379

>>51833021
One is made in china, and has no chance of getting replaced under warranty

The other is superior in many other ways, made in korea, and has amazing google customer support

I get they should have done 3GB RAM, just like the 6P should have had 4, but there's more to consider.

Personally I'd never touch a Oneplus phone.

> but what the fuck is the point in that damn software encryption

The point is for some reason google wants this, but doesn't want to force manufacturers to use hardware encryption, and for some reason that means the nexus phones have to deal with it

Notice no one is bitching about it on the Nexus 6P. Most certainly this won't be an issue on future phones.

Also, people are saying Android 6.0.1 largely fixed the Nexus 5x lag issues.

At least on the Nexus you can easily, and without breaking warranty, change this.

That's the biggest reason I won't buy anything else for myself and my wife here on out. Nexus phones, or bust.

I hope the next 5" Nexus phone is better, however. She certainly won't put up with a fucking 5.7" screen.

The phones are decent at best. Too many quality control issues. I should have been more specific however. What really turns me away from OPO is their lack of support for my market (burgerland) and the invite system. Also, it's upsetting to see these wonderful engineers handicapping themselves. Imagine what they could do if they set out to make a true flagship instead of this budget phone nonsense. OPX body with industry leading internals. muh dick
>>
>>51833216
A couple bad apples don't spoil the entire lot m8. The Oneplus One is a great phone.
>>
>>51833244
Fuck the glass back, seriously any company that does that in 2015 deserves to be shot. How hard is to make the back panel some nice metal instead? Or, what about super hard plastic that feels like glass? That shit exists.

>>51833251

Funny enough I've owned 2 glass back phones, and several other smartphones and have never broken any. That doesn't mean I want to increase the chances shit will break, of course.

I don't think it would prevent from buying a phone though, I'd likely skin any plain metal or glass back phone.
>>
Just got an s6 yesterday, I really like how it looks so far and it seems like an all around good phone

My OPO which is a year old benches as the 7th highest phone available on Antutu. The build quality is great, I've dropped it in the rain before and it still works great. The entire user experience of the phone for me has been great.
It's a fucking great phone. I'll stand by that until one day it isn't.

>lack of support for my market
if you're talking about band support, I can confirm that that's only the OPX, my OPO has full network band support in burgerland

All their phones are "flagships" they only make 3 phones. And the OP2 has crazy specs. 4GBs is excessive amounts of RAM.

Will the Galaxy S6 be FREE w/contract around Christmas time?

Or were Black Friday prices the best we're gonna get...
>>
>>51833364
On Verizon at least, even if something is free on contract you're going to pay 480 bucks in extra fees over 2 years, and five bucks more a month after that than a pay per month phone or bringing an unlocked phone to the line.

I think ATT has similar pricing.
>>

Give me plastic tbqh. Most durable, and doesn't contribute to overheating like aluminum does. Ask HTC lel.

>>51833345
It's a solid phone with great performance. Still hate the touchjizz. And because the SoC is different, ROMs don't have the same support but oh well.
>>
>>51833353
None of their phones have full network band support here dumbass, they all fully can never work on Verizon and Sprint

The Oneplus X is not a flagship, it's their first "super budget" phone. The OP1 was the 2014-2015 flagship, while the OP2 is the 2015-2016 flagship.
>>
>>51833353
Your OPO is great. Sadly, not all users can say that.

Nah I'm grandfathered into a $25 lower monthly "smartphone access fee" (AT&T) where they usually make up the difference ($25x24 = $600) so if a phone is "FREE w/contract" for me it's actually free compared to off-contract with monthly phone payments.

Yes I'm on the newest tier plans, there is just some fine print that allows grand-fathered cheaper fees, it's what happened last time I upgraded too. That's why I'm obsessed with getting phones "FREE w/contract" cuz it's actually the cheapest way for me.

So I guess the question is: historically, is Christmas cheaper than Black Friday?

No, but end of flagship cycle can be. S7 is supposed to be announced at CES 20126 in January.

I live in Canada.
On a tight budget of basically no more than $200 USD.
I found the Mi4 to be the best phone for me on Kimovil. It is in my price range, has a good battery and rom community, and replacement screens can be bought.
The other phone I was looking at was possibly the Meizu MX4/MX4 Pro. They didn't seem to have as many of the side benefits I listed.
Is the Meizu the better choice? Or is there an even better phone for $200 USD?
I know the 4G bands don't work in Canada; I'm OK with it, 3G here is fine.

>>51833719

I'd take the more popular phone in a heart beat. Not because hive mind, but because of ROM support, and community support. The Xaiomi Phones are awesome from what I hear anyways.

Most of you hate normies and facebook, but I still need it to keep in touch with a bunch of normie friends... So what's the final word on this, a good app to get for it that isn't botnet as shit?

A mandatory feature for me is message notifications (which excludes multiple otherwise good options like Faceslim) - since they dropped XMPP, what are the current options of supporting them bar the official botnet apps?
>>
>>51833998
Can you get the Facebook app and lock it down with xprivacy?
>>
>>51834017
Technically yes, but the default facebook app is ridiculously bloated and I have an old phone with limited internal memory. Facebook Lite doesn't seem to work on my phone though, haven't troubleshooted that too much yet - but does it even have message notifications or just the usual "XYZ liked your penis photo" garbage that's simpler to get via RSS anyway?

>>
>>51834105
Correct me if I remember wrong, but doesn't the default Facebook app have the same aggressive autoupdate privileges like Google play?

Nothing does that except the play store and play services. Not even Facebook pre-installed as a system app does that.
>>
>>51834161

I dont think they are TERRIBLE, but they aren't as good as a real flagship, and it DOES feel like it. No matter how much you might claim it does, it just doesn't The buttons feel cheaper, and the chassis itself feels cheaper compared to a flagship from LG/Samsung/etc.

Eh, I wouldn't say that everything is perfect.

I mean sure, they made a pretty excellent phone for its price point, but it doesn't have a removable battery, microsd slot (which I miss), and its antenna seems to be weaker than other phones (that I've encountered) on the same service.

But of course you get what you pay for, which in this case its a phone that can easily rival its competition without breaking your wallet.

Good for the money. Slap on a marshmallow rom and you're set. I like mine. Only thing that's disappointing is the camera.

Nexus 5X or LG G4?

Looking to buy a used iPhone. I'm not really interested in the 6 since it doesn't look durable enough, and I like 'em small.

What I'm wondering is if there's an appreciable performance difference between the 5 and 5S? Enough that I'd care, not playing games.

charging your phone with an usb cable to your pc causes swollen batteries right?

or is it worth pay up to 380 for galaxy note 4

Am thinking about getting an Android.

Will spend a lot if it means I won't have to replace it until at least 2018.

Preferably bigger screen, good camera, decent battery life.

Suggestions?

The phone you're looking for doesnt exist yet. You'll have to wait more, 2015 has been a mediocre year for phones compared to 2014, when a few classics came out.

what were the classics of 2014 again

What would be the best phone under about a $300 price range in Australia? Preference for something with good music playing ability and a decent camera, but whatever's best overall would be good too.

Zenfone 2 owner here. It's not shit but you'd definitely be better off buying your grandma a Moto G, the bloat on the Zenfone could cause annoyances and unnecessary battery drain if you don't intend on playing around with it.

My 5s doesn't hold charge like it used to, thinking about upgrading. Do I get a 6s+ or a nexus 6p?

6S+
Godly battery, good camera, great build quality, godly NAND performance, 3D touch is good shit with the keyboard cursor, 2GB of RAM is amazing on iOS with apps rarely shutting down, vibration motor is top notch; it's only bad if you really dislike iOS

>price range?
~300€

>sd card slot?
preferably

>removable battery?
does't matter

I was thinking about buying a chinkphone, but I'm not sure if it's a good idea.
Looking for a phone with an sd card, if possible.
Rooting would also be nice and having custom firmware even better
What do you recommend? Thanks in advance
