Hating quantum computing is a meme here, you won't get any meaningful replies.

this

Some one posted this the other day the people started talking about skylake.

Great news, hope they get it working with the regular computing tasks soon and manage to simplify it.
Also say goodbye to any encryption out there, this thing is going to crack anything nearly instantly, which is probably the main reason it's being developed.

What sucks about this thing is that it's going to be at least a decade until this tech starts leaking into the consumer world in any way, so we're probably going to have to enjoy the incredible 5% yearly increases in processing power that jewtel gracefully provides us for many years to come.
>>
>>51814989

it's neat but there isn't any practical consumer purpose for it unless you have an obcesne amount of data to go through (which so far only google and the nsa have)

Kek, encrypt everything multiple times.

Awesome, now we'll need a 100,000 word passphrase instead of 10.

>isn't any practical consumer purpose for a quantum computer
niggardly mouthbreather

so many things could be done with a quantum computer that just are impossible to do with our regular caveman machines

>solve chess
>simulate entire world economy
>solve ridiculously complicated pde problems
>run crysis on max settings at 60fps
>solve GO
>100000k monitors for porn
>>

>simulate entire world economy

You know what I wanna see?
Simulating the damn weather.
Our current weather forecasts suck major ass and they can barely get them right even when talking about something only 3 days away.

Quantum cryptography is a thing. Its security is guaranteed by the laws of quantum mechanics.

Is this how it's going to go?

>only government and big corporations can afford this shit
>consumers who obviously won't have access to this new technology are still stuck with the same old crap

>consumers will be unable to keep up and all encryption is fucked for a period?

You think they will just unleash that shit onto the world without securing themselves against it? This is not the 1970s or 80s.
>>
>>51815634

>consumers will be unable to keep up and all encryption is fucked for a period?

This is the most likely scenario.
Big companies out there are going to have these d-wave machines chugging in their basements.
Think about the ransomware crap for example.
That's more than enough reason for the security companies out there to justify getting tons of these encryption destroyers.

>>51815590
The big players sure as fuck aren't going to let average people get their hands on quantum cryptography, until they absolutely have to.
What's most likely going to happen is that after some time, some autistic fuck MacGyvers up a way to achieve it in his basement and shares the info with others out there.

Two years ago Google and NASA went halfsies on a D-Wave quantum computer, mostly to find out whether there are actually any performance gains to be had when using quantum annealing instead of a conventional computer.

>As always, it's important to note that D-Wave's computers are not capable of universal computing: they are only useful for a small number of very specific tasks—and Google, NASA, and others are currently trying to work out what those tasks might be.

>D-Wave’s claim of "over 1,000 qubits" is also unclear. In the past, several physical qubits were clustered to create a single computational qubit, and D-Wave doesn’t make that distinction clear.
>>
DWave can barely handle the one specific problem that it's designed for. They're still a long, long way from being able to break RSA.

Also, post-quantum cryptography is already a thing: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-quantum_cryptography

The PBS show NOVA did a documentary on cryptography. It was a *very* casual friendly show. The name of the episode was "Rise of The Hackers".

I mention this because around the middle of the documentary they talk about quantum computing. UC Santa Barbara (a party school) is actually doing research in quantum computing. It is a good watch if you are a complete pleb.

What are the odds "digital security" companies start popping up based around paying people to make ransomware, and then running a decryption service for just under whatever the ransomeware is asking?
