I can trade my GTX 780 (non Ti) for a GTX 970 for $50.

Yours is better, the gtx 980 ti is better than yours so unless you can get that don't bother, Overclock yours if you can
The 3.5 GB problem doesnt exist, it's 4 GB its just the last 500 mb is at a lower bandwidth speed.
