With VMs, sure, but that's another kettle of fish. It has nothing to do with the number of physical CPUs or CPU cores your system has.

I don't even know what the benefit to having 4 CPUs is, all I know is that I want it
>>
>>51812989
Octo-socket systems exist you know. I remember that a few years ago before G34 released, Tyan had made a dual motherboard combo system, with each board holding a quartet of C32 sockets. The boards would link to each other via a pair of riser cards, and the slave board would be on top of the master board.

Intel also has Octo-socket systems for their super super high end Xeons, but they're exceedingly rare.
>>
>>51812989
I think I have somewhere pictures of an 8 socket Tyan mainboard.

>>
>>51813119
Well, the intel Octo socket systems I think stick a pair of CPUs and their associated memory pool on a daughterboard, and then 4 of them are installed in the same system to produce an octo-socket server.

As for the Tyan, i have no earthly fucking clue.

I would say yes, but you might be thinking no.

Long time ago i think about build a multi processor pc, but i realize that is useless if u don't have software made for it. more cores or more processors doesn't mean more power if software don't use it. it's a waste of energy and money

It's something that people who don't know what they're talking about but think they do will tell you won't provide any benefits and is for "servers and workstations".

In reality dual CPU systems incredibly based and will give you a wide range of performance increases.

It's two fuckin' CPUs. Come on.
>>
>>51812848
If it's a video game that is optimized for many threads it will take advantage of two CPUs. To the game it is just moar coars.

Hi
>>
>>51815596
But most software these days is multi-threaded so the benefits are substantial.
>>
>>51811883
I'm NEET and I bought a dual CPU workstation off of ebay because it was the most computing power I could get for under $500.

But I do some video work on it. I use it to intelligently upscale and clean up old porn flicks, which I then sell for a few bucks to old-man collectors.
>>
>>51811835
why, this is noting more than adding more cores.
>>
>>51816874
yes, and doubling the memory controllers, spreadimg the heat load across two seperate areas, doubling the pci-e lanes, ect.
>>
>>51816729
Several. Search Newegg.

Put 16 core Opterons in them and you can have a 64-core machine.

Two motherboards in one case, a two layer board by Tyan. It's not even Intel, which is hilarious.
>>
>>51812362
Sure it does, if you are smart, you can overprovision up to 10x
>>
>>51817543
Yep, and if you have the understanding of a card and balls for it you could cut down a x16 PCI-E card to fit a PCI-E x2 clot if the card only uses two of the lanes.
>>

I have a single cpu board with an e5-2680 w/ 8 DIMM slots.

I have it running about 40 VMs

It isnt affecting anything.
>>
>>51817736
Fuck off cunt, clearly this would work great for a home lab.
>>
>>51817543
yea, pci-e is pretty simple, and is pretty flexible with the lanes

first little set of pins (before the key) are for power and other bits and pieces, the rest are the lanes (data channels), layed out in order (lane1, lane2, lane3...)
so if you only use the first lane, it's "1x", first four is "4x", etc

you *can* connect any card to any slot, provided you can modify one to fit, though there's no gaurantee the card will work at full speed
for example, you can shove a 16x slot gpu into a 4x slot on a motherboard, but the bandwidth will be limited, so it might not run full speed
you can also put a 1x sound card into a 16x slot, and it'll run just the same, just using one lane out of the 16 available
>>
>>51817710

yeah. for some reason when i did research for if i could put my soundcard in one of the larger pci-e slots I came to the conclusion you couldn't. will try it in another slot now because where it is now is too close to my GPU

The sparc servers can be "combined" to one machine with one address space. This way you could build a 64 socket server where each cpu addresses up to 512 gb ram.
