It had lots of good things under the hood like WDDM (the reason Windows rarely crashes from video driver fails) and a new audio system, but with the UI changes it ran much slower than XP and required enough memory low end hardware could barely run the OS alone. Starting a program on a poverty tier Vista craptop could take minutes.
Also, Nvidia's WDDM driver wasn't ready on release day and caused like half of all recorded Vista BSODs within a few weeks of the launch.

I haven't had any issues with it, save one nitpick: since desktop compositing and shit are forced on, there's display lag on anything that isn't fullscreen, so if you play rhythm games or stuff like that you might have to change your setup around a bit.
