Why is it nobody understands basic internet shit? Me and my two roommates just got internet, I was going to put it in my name and talk to the ISP myself, but my one roommate did it before I could. Of course he believed whatever they told him, so he got the 80$ a month package which is 12Mbps, bits not bytes. He claims they told him it is super fast cause he just told them he only has an Xbox, while I told him to get the fastest they had. He told me, nah man it's blazing fast! But he also thinks it's bouncing off "internet towers " because we have a wireless router. The installation guy didn't even know the difference brethren bits and bytes, he told me they were the same thing! He didn't even know if they have soft or hard data caps...
Anyone else have stories of family or friends trying to act like they know more about technology than you do?
Internet speed is pretty much always written in bits you twat.
>80$
I smell a monopoly.
Also WTF are soft/hard data caps? You have DATA CAPS on your non-mobile connection?
>>51809084
Yes this is becoming quite common. I currently live in an apartment complex with two roommates and we are forced to use Comcast for phone/internet/cable and they apply a monthly 500gb limit. For every 50gb we go over, we have to pay an additional $10.
On top of this, we also are forced to get their basic cable package (because ISP'S know we just want Internet to watch tv).
>>51809084
I know is in bits, which is why I was so wtf when he said 12 megabits a second, and I was hoping maybe he meant bytes and using a more customer friendly term or something... I was wrong. And yes, there are multiple ISP around here that have caps. We have other providers here but this is the only one that services this particular house, it's fucked up.
>>51809084
Soft cap is when you hit the limit your speed is decreased or you pay for more data
Hard cap is when you hit the limit and have to wait next month to use data.
why the fuck haven't people gotten out their pitchforks and stormed their local jewcast office?
I can understand data caps on mobile internet, but caps on hardwired connections is just jew tier
>>51809147
Holy shit I'd be so fucking mad if I ever had to care about how much internet I'm consuming.
It's not fucking oil for fucks sake, they're not going to run out of internet
>>51809443
To be fair we're with AT&T and I still don't know if we have caps, the tech install guy didn't even know. He didn't know much about it, he just got it working and then changed a few unknown things on the router, which I wouldn't have allowed but my roommate said it was ok since he has it in his name. Then the install guy talked about call of duty for half an hour.
Cable/ISP monopolies are the fucking worst, I get 2 megabits per second with 600 channels on a tv I don't watch for $120 a month
>>51808666
$80 per MONTH for Internet? And on top of that 12Mbps? Are you sure it's not $12 per month for 80Mbps? That sounds way more normal, you Americans are overpaying for your internet
Top kek I'm in Japan paying $40 per month for my 2Gbps line
>>51809578
I fucking know right, and yes it's 80$ for 12Mbps. He even throttled us down so "the line doesn't get erratic", we should have got 15 Mbps. I told my roommates I'm not paying my third of it, as I won't use it, it's useless internet to me.
Oh he also thinks AT&T well charge us for the whole year and cancel the internet if we use any other router than the one they lease to us.
>>51809443
>I can understand data caps on mobile internet
Really? Why is that? They're just as fucking idiotic in that application too.
>>51810138
Whaaat? Why would he think that?
>>51810360
It's to stop people torrenting/using large amounts of data all the time, cell towers can only handle so many people on at once and only so much data can go through them
>>51810488
Only so much data can go through them AT ONCE, the internet doesn't just fucking run out.
>>51810479
He doesn't understand how shit works but thinks he does. I have so many stories of stupid shit he thinks when it comes to tech.
>>51810505
But if everyone could just use their 4g as much as they wanted to, I'd just mobile hotspot all the time, esp considering the internet here is like 2x slower than my 4g.
Comcast! Wow!
>>51809648
>I told my roommates I'm not paying my third of it, as I won't use it, it's useless internet to me.
So what do you plan to do? Not use the internet at home lol?
>>51810551
I have an unlocked phone with unlimited data on T-Mobile. If it weren't for the fact that my roommates already have internet that they pay for and let me use for free, I'd just tether from my phone.
And most of the time, if they're using the internet, I do exactly that. T-Mobile doesn't throttle me because unlocked non carrier branded phone doesn't tell them how much is tether and how much is me watching YouTube and Netflix at work
>around year 2000
>mom calls
>she moved the computer across the room
>too far from male RJ45 (wtf?) coming out of the wall
>needs "extension chord"
>suggest getting a female-female RJ45 adapter
>tell her to not get a $50 hub
>tell her that if someone tries to sell her a $50 hub for this, she's being scammed
>comes home with a $50 hub
>"they said that's what I needed"
I didn't say anything, I just replaced it with the $2 adapter and used the hub for lan parties.
>>51810558
I have my internet on my phone. It's been perfectly fine for the last year, so...
>>51810554
They won't run it to my house.
>>51810554
thats way over priced, fucking jews
>>51810360
until we have cell towers that can handle multiple terabits per second of bandwidth, it's going to be hard to give out unlimited wireless plans for cheap
>>51812639
So if someone is downloading excessively on a congested tower slow his ass down until it isn't congested anymore. This notion that you can run out of internet for the month is ridiculous.
>>51812671
I do think throttling is a better way to handle excessive bandwidth users, at least on mobile
but yes, 'running out' of internet is a dumb concept
>>51810554
Literally what i pay for.
>>51809491
Just imagine how bad it is for satellite Internet. It sucks. We only have 15 gigs per month
>>51812904
Why do you have that?
>>51812928
Live 30 minutes from town, satellite internet is all we can get out this far. (btw download speed is usually 1Mbps on a clear day
>>51813005
Jesus Christ how horrifying
>mfw upon reading this shit speeds for this jew prices.
Y'all getting fucked anons
tfw you see someone paying 80 bucks/month
>tfw live at home with parents with fiber running into the house capable of 1 gig but mom won't buy anything more than 10 meg even if I offer to pay for internet in full
>tfw when upgraded from 5 down 1 up (realistically 1 down .5 up on a good day) DSL to 10 down 2 up fiber was a fucking godsend
>tfw mom didn't want to do that until I convinced her it would "make netflix work better" because we were throwing two game sessions and netflix over what really was a ~2 meg download pipe
>tfw the thing hanging her up was the landline and how the line remains powered in case of an outage "in case we lose power like that one time after hurricane Ike and we didn't have power for 11 days" because they were gonna put a converter box to put it over the fiber line that uses a battery backup
>standing around as she explains this to the install tech who doesn't give two shits and has just been tasked with converting the last fucking house on the street from copper pair to fiber.
>fiber had been available for like 2 years before we upgraded
>We were in the middle of suburbia in like 2013 with a 2 meg copper pair
not sure why we have to have the fucking land line, we use it for two things: answering calls from grandpa cause he won't fucking dial a cell phone number that he knows and has written down and running to look at whos calling and not answering it because it's a sales call.
At least we get unlimited internet...Fucking hate settling like this.
Better watch out guise or the internet man is gonna come to your house and shut off the internet valve.
>>51817365
Move out of your parent's house you whiny bitch.
